Bengaluru Metro failing its commuters? Tejasvi Surya slams BMRCL, cites global examples, and suggests major fixes

Bengaluru Metro
, calling out its design, pricing, and overall approach to public transport. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Surya said the metro system lacks ambition, aesthetics, and respect for commuters.
He shared a YouTube video titled Why Moscow Is Insanely Well Designed, urging the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to learn from international examples. 'Bengaluru Metro should learn the best from around the world,' he wrote.
Surya praised the Moscow Metro for its 80-second train frequency, beautiful station architecture, and efficient city coverage. 'Moscow Metro runs at 80-second frequency, covers the city with dense radial lines, costs a fraction, and every station is a work of art,' he said. 'Public transport isn't just about movement. It's about ambition, aesthetics, and respect for the commuter. But this sentiment is missing in Bengaluru.'

He also raised concerns about transparency, particularly questioning why the fare fixation committee report hasn't been made public. 'I have reminded MD @OfficialBMRCL today to make public the fare fixation committee report. Why are you not making it public? It certainly isn't a document of national security,' Surya posted. 'We deserve to understand what led to such steep Metro prices.'
Calling for change, he stressed that public transport should be the cheapest and most efficient form of travel within cities. 'We need to push that,' he added, while sharing the video link.

BMRCL is a joint venture between the Karnataka and Central governments, with a 50-50 partnership. The organisation functions under the Metro Railways (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002. Srinivas Katikithala, Secretary of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, currently chairs the board, which includes both Central and state government officials.

2 held for sheltering Pahalgam attackers
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two men for allegedly harbouring the terrorists who killed 26 civilians in Pahalgam two months ago, the agency said on Sunday, marking the first set of arrests in connection with the terror attack. 'Parvaiz and Bashir had knowingly harboured the three armed terrorists at a seasonal dhok (hut) at Hill Park before the attack. The two men had provided food, shelter and logistical support to the terrorists who selectively killed the tourists on the basis of their religious identity,' the anti-terror agency said in a statement and added the two have been charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act's (UAPA) Section 19 (punishment for harbouring or concealing a terrorist). The agency did not disclose further information about the two men. India responded with Operation Sindoor on May 7, bombing nine terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in pre-dawn strikes that killed at least 100 militants. ‘Revive scheme to bring more adi dravidar, tribal students to IITs, NITs'
Madurai: A Madurai-based activist has called for reviving a skill development scheme announced under the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation (TAHDCO) in 2013-2014 but was not implemented due to 'administrative reasons'. Based on a reply to a Right to Information (RTI) Act query, activist S Karthik told TOI that had the scheme been properly implemented, hundreds of adi dravidar and tribal students in Tamil Nadu would have got opportunities to study in IITs or NITs. "The scheme became defunct almost the same year citing administrative reasons. As per the scheme, 50 students would be selected by an exam each year and given special training for JEE and AIEEE exams by selected institutions at 1 lakh per student for two years in their Class XI and Class XII," he said. The RTI reply showed that a GO dated Oct 15, 2013, was issued by the adi dravidar and tribal welfare department, regarding implementation of the scheme under TAHDCO. However, the scheme was abandoned without a single beneficiary. He said it is baffling that the state government did not give a second thought to the scheme and urged it to immediately revive the scheme by allotting necessary funds and select at least 100 students for the following year. Notably, at present, the Naan Mudhalvan scheme of the Tamil Nadu govt provides support for students from underprivileged backgrounds for higher education.
