Buffy reboot casts new Sarah Michelle Gellar approved-Slayer... but fans are divided

Daily Mail15-05-2025

The hotly-anticipated Buffy reboot has cast its new slayer with OG Slayer Sarah Michelle Gellar breaking the news to her new co-star.
The acclaimed actress, 48, revealed Ryan Kiera Armstrong, 15, been cast as the titular character in the reboot of the WB hit, that was originally the air from 1997 to 2003.
The casting decision came via a Zoom call in which Gellar asked Armstrong one very important question.
'Do you want to stand beside me and save the world?,' Gellar asked and Armstrong replied, 'I'm so honored, thank you for trusting me,' an elated Armstrong said through a mixture of tears and laughter.
'From the moment I saw Ryan's audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side,' Gellar said.
'To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent, at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.'
And it was Armstrong's elated and charming reaction to the news that captured the hearts of the Buffy fan universe who are largely on the new Slayer's side.
Sarah Michelle was 18 when she stepped into the Slayer's shoes.
Armstrong's breakthrough role came at the age of eight in 2019's The Art of Racing in the Rain opposite Amanda Seyfried.
Armstrong has also been busy in TV with a recurring role in Anne with an E on Netflix as well as FX's American Horror Story: Red Tide, Disney+'s Star Wars: Skeleton Crew with Jude Law and in a recurring role on Ethan Hawke's The Lowdown.
Ryan also stepped into the role Drew Barrymore once held in the remake of Firestarter in 2022.
Fans were divided over the casting of Armstrong - with some delighted at the new slayer and others citing Buffy lore, and wondering why all the Slayers were activated in season seven of Buffy the Vampire Slayer if they aren't going to be used now.

Some fans were excited about the casting news
Some fans were not happy with the news and posted their reasons why
The new Buffy is a reboot of the popular WB series set in the present day. All those reactivated Slayers would be 22 years older than they were in the final season of the series in 2003.
The Slayer was always going to be a teenaged girl.
Sarah Michelle has shut down rumors of a Buffy remake for years and earlier this week, she revealed why now is the right time for a reboot of the beloved show.
The actress said on SiriusXM's The Morning Mash Up that she wants the project to bring comfort to fans living in particularly divided times.
'You know, I hope that it brings comfort. I think for me that was like, the big thing is that when you realize all these years later that the show still translates, 'cause sometimes you watch a show that you loved and you see it now and you're like, "OK," but it doesn't have the same meaning,' she began.
'Buffy is still hitting people who are watching it for the first time and they're seeing themselves and they're seeing their friends and they're finding their chosen family,' Gellar told co-host Ryan Sampson.
'I think more than ever right now, as we get more and more divided, we need that chosen family, so I hope to provide a new chosen family.'
She appeared on the morning show with Alyson Hannigan and said the reason why now is the right time is that there is a story that picks up where the show left off 22 years ago.
'[I did it for] Chloé Zhao and the Zuckermans — I call them the Zucks,' SMG explained.
Zhao is signed on to direct the series' pilot based off a script written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman.
'They had the story and I think that's why no one, everyone was just trying to redo it,' Gellar continued.
'[The Zuckermans] had a continuation of where it goes now and, you know, as Alyson and I now have teenagers and you see the circle of what's needed, which is actually why we're here today.'
Lilla and Nora Zuckerman used some Buffy terminology to praise Armstrong.
'We are so overjoyed to have found this generation's slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong, she absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one,' they said.

This is how much it costs to get the Lauren Sanchez look

She's a one-time astronaut, trained pilot, entrepreneur, mother of three, and former television presenter, and 55-year-old Lauren Sánchez is set to make (more) headlines next week when she becomes the second Mrs Bezos. Fresh off her glamorous, no-expenses-spared hen do in Paris, where she and attendees – including Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry and Eva Longoria – stayed at the glitzy Hôtel Cheval Blanc, Sánchez is getting ready to tie the knot to Bezos, the third richest man in the world, in Venice. But who is the woman behind the headlines? Born and raised in Albuquerque New Mexico, she was a key member of the cheerleading squad, former beauty pageant queen and innately glamorous, kind and confident – according to those who knew her in her youth. Old photos showcase (typically 1980s) voluminous, flicked hair, a honed but curvaceous physique and killer tan, not to mention a rather bewitching glare. However, it was during her 20-year career as a TV presenter and news reporter – where gigs included So You Think You Can Dance and Good Day LA – when her beauty aesthetic really evolved from small-town beauty to glamazon. Renowned for her fierce Fox news presenter glam (think glossy blow dries, heavily-shadowed eyes and a dazzling smile) she is a symbol of a very specific American look, where visits to one's aesthetic doctor – whether for laser treatment or injectables – are non-negotiable. Her look has certainly changed over the years, with rumours swirling over various treatments she may or may not have had done since the early Noughties. It is any bride's prerogative to indulge in all her favourite treatments in the lead up to the big day, so here we take a look at those Sánchez seems to like. The tan: £250 'If Lauren Sánchez is wearing a spray tan in recent photos, it's been executed to perfection,' says James Harknett, tanner to the stars, including Daisy Edgar-Jones, Kylie Minogue and Demi Moore, adding that it is expertly colour matched. 'High-profile clients expect a bespoke tan that looks like their skin, but richer. I carry more than 30 different formulas to tailor the result, but Three Warriors do one that is flattering on most skin tones.' Many well known faces have someone come to their home, the price for which is between £150 and £250. The tweakments: £1,050 Just like many of the experts consulted for this story, Dr Sophie Shotter – who is known for her natural-looking tweakments – notes that Sánchez's face looks structurally different from 10 years ago. 'Now she looks more fierce,' she says, adding that this might be as a result of surgery or injectables, like dermal filler – which costs about £650 for a syringe with Dr Shotter – in her cheeks and lips. 'She's clearly looking after her skin and I suspect she's had smatterings of muscle-relaxing injections, such as Botox [costing about £400], too – she looks really fresh,' adds Dr Shotter. The teeth: £26,000 Sánchez has an eye-catching set of pearly whites – uniform and symmetrical, dentist Dr Sam Jethwa of Bespoke Smile says it's relatively uncommon to see teeth quite so perfect without cosmetic enhancement. 'Her teeth have a glossy finish which suggests she may have veneers – these are thin porcelain shells that are placed over the front of natural teeth,' he explains. 'They can enhance the shade of the smile, create balance and facial harmony and correct imperfections such as chips, cracks, and uneven edges.' Veneers with Dr Jethwa will set you back around £1,350 to £1,630 per tooth. The nails: £700 She prefers to keep things neutral on her nails – chunky French manicures and pearlescent nudes. Tom Bachik, who also regularly works with Selena Gomez and Jennifer Lopez, is her go-to manicurist; the pair have worked together on a number of nail looks, with one of the most notable being a 'pink glass slipper mani' for the 2024 Met Gala. Feminine and elegant, the look evoked 'sheer iridescent glass' while drawing attention to two rather show-stopping diamonds on her fingers. While an appointment with a technician like Bachik is hard to put a price on, the most luxurious manicures in the UK can reach £700. The workout: £120 In a 2023 interview with Vogue, Sánchez revealed that she works out with the newly-muscled Bezos, calling him a 'monster in the gym'. She has shared videos of her own workouts – often with trainer Wes Okerson, who is a Hyrox athlete (competing in running and functional training workouts – not for the faint-hearted) and personal trainer. The pair do a lot of resistance training (including Nordic hamstring curls and dumbbell squat presses) to build muscle, which isn't just essential for a lean, strong physique, but good health too. £120 is the going rate for a luxury personal training session in London. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lauren Sanchez (@laurenwsanchez) The hair: £870 Favouring long, swishy brunette lengths, Sánchez turns to hair pro Pete Burkill for her cut and colour. With clients including Anna Kendrick, Millie Bobby Brown and Sánchez's friend Natasha Poonawalla, Burkill recently took her raven lengths to a more sun-kissed shade, with stealthily-placed highlights and balayage. An age-old colourist hack to bring luminosity to the skin and frame key facial features, Sánchez's new look is perfect for summer – and, of course, for getting wed. A full head balayage and tint with Burkill at Josh Wood Salon (where he works part time) costs £575, while a cut and blow dry is £295. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lauren Sanchez (@laurenwsanchez) The cosmetic work: £24,000 Experts agree that Sánchez appears to have had facial and breast cosmetic surgery. 'When comparing earlier and more recent images, there are features suggestive of facial rejuvenation procedures,' says the cosmetic surgeon Patrick Mallucci. 'Her facial structure would suggest she's had a mid-face lift with brow lifting and rhinoplasty.' One of her close friends, Kris Jenner, 69, recently paid an estimated £100,000 for a facelift, and while the jury is out on whether Sánchez has had one too, prices for a mid-face lift in the UK can reach £15,000. Famed for his natural approach to breast augmentation, Mallucci also notes that she's had breast surgery, opting for a 'fuller, more obvious look, with round-shaped implants'. While today patients tend to opt for a more natural aesthetic, with smaller or teardrop-shaped implants, the full cleavage look is more popular in the US. In London, breast augmentation typically ranges from £8,000 to £9,000, however for a surgeon with extensive experience and a highly specialised approach, like Mr Mallucci, fees are considerably higher. The make-up: £843 Turning to Buster Knight – whose clients also include Jenner and Paris Hilton – for her glam, Sánchez favours flawless skin, a nude lip and defined eyes. You'll often find her sporting a diffused feline flick and set of ultra fluttery lashes, whether at the Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda show last year or Cannes Film Festival. Knight has credited the Dr Sebagh Rose de Vie skincare range (the serum is £132) and Dr Vali's Cutis micro-contouring tool (£625) to 'get red carpet snatched' before make-up application, while her base make-up often comes courtesy of Armani Beauty's Luminous Silk Foundation (£47) and Concealer (£39). View this post on Instagram A post shared by Buster Knight🧿 (@busterknight) The other beauty treatments: £955 With a killer set of brows, it's likely that Sánchez gets her brows threaded regularly (costing £95 a session with Anu Khapung at The Dorchester). She is also a fan of lash extensions, £360 for an hour with Edy London, preferring a feathery, full effect – faux lashes are individually applied to natural hairs to create a semi-permanent look, no mascara needed. And then there are facials; with her even-toned complexion and fresh appearance, Sánchez is likely to have them regularly. Whether sculpting face massage, microneedling or LED light therapy, the UK's top London facialists combine a multitude of different modalities, for prices that can reach more than £500 for an hour appointment.

Brit, 22, arrested at Disneyland Paris after 'trying to marry Ukrainian girl, 9'

Disneyland Paris cast members alerted the police after the 22-year-old man was seen with a child, dressed in four-inch heels taped to her feet and accompanied by her Ukranian mother A British man has been arrested at Disneyland Paris for trying to marry a nine-year-old girl in a bizarre private event. Disney cast members alerted the police after the 22-year-old man was seen with a child, dressed in four-inch heels taped to her feet and accompanied by her Ukranian mother, at private function held at 5am on Saturday, before the French theme park was open to the public. ‌ The ceremony was due to take place at dawn in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle at the end of Main Street, USA and had been hired out of for a wedding, with organisers failing to tell Disney what was planned. ‌ Disneyland Paris was reportedly deceived about the nature of the event, with the organiser assuming the "identity of a Latvian national" and using "false documents to secure the contract for privatising the park", BFM TV in France reports. It is reported that guests' were recruited online via adverts seeking 200 adults and 100 children aged between five and 15 to play the guests at a 'rehearsal' for a wedding in Disneyland. Video obtained by BFM showed around 100 seated guests awaiting the ceremony as a female violin trio played at dawn before a stage strewn with flowers. The event reportedly cost around £110,000. "Four people were arrested and questioned: the groom, who was believed to be the organiser of the event and is presumed to be British, aged 22; the mother of the child, a 41-year-old Ukrainian woman; and two Latvian nationals aged 55 and 24," a statement from the French prosecutor's office in the nearby town of Meaux said. The 55-year-old Latvian man claimed he was recruited to play the role of the bride's father for 12,000 euros but discovered last minute she was nine years old, local news reports. ‌ Disneyland Paris told French newspaper Le Parisien the event was immediately shut down by its team and that guests were stopped from entering the premises. Circumstances around the wedding remain unclear, as to whether it was a stunt or a real ceremony. A medical examination of the young girl found she had not suffered any violence, the prosecutor's office said. A police source said the groom has claimed to be the director of a production company and they were shooting a video. ‌ An updated statement from the prosecutors office said: "So it wasn't a wedding, but a staged wedding filmed with around a hundred extras. They privatised Disneyland Paris, pretending it was a real wedding." Two suspects have been charged with 'fraud and breach of trust' against Disneyland Paris. One wedding guest told the Le Parisien: "We all thought we were going to attend a wedding... Everyone was stunned, no one expected it. Disneyland did things very well. ‌ "They canceled everything as soon as they realised the bride was a child. We were shocked to see that." Another extra, named Yeleen, who attended the ceremony with her daughter, said: "I saw a little girl dressed in white. I saw her hair prepared with curls and a lady picking her up in her arms. "At that moment, I was shocked. I realised when I saw the child. It was atrocious."

Johnny Depp claims he was betrayed by some of his closest friends who deserted him after he was accused of abuse by ex-wife Amber Heard

Johnny Depp has spoken out about how he was 'deserted' by his closest friends after he was accused of abuse by his ex-wife Amber Heard. Jonny married Amber in 2015 after the pair met on set of The Rum Diary (2011). However, she filed for divorce the following year, and it was finalised in 2017. The Hollywood star, 62, always strenuously denied the claims made by Amber, 39, during the couple's divorce proceedings in 2016. The couple's alleged violent relationship sent shockwaves throughout the industry and both parties were dropped from work projects at the time. Johnny was recast in the Fantastic Beasts series by Mads Mikkelsen, while Amber claimed she lost out on opportunities due to the online backlash. As well as being axed from jobs, Johnny has now claimed he was also let down by some of the people in his inner circle who attended his children's birthday parties. Speaking to the Sunday Times, Johnny criticised the actions of three of his close friends and claimed he had been a 'crash test dummy for the #MeToo movement'. He said: 'I'll tell you what hurts. There are people, and I'm thinking of three, who did me dirty. Those people were at my kids' parties, throwing them in the air.' 'And, look, I understand people who could not stand up [for me], because the most frightening thing to them was making the right choice.' Johnny's agent of 30 years who was sacked in 2016, Tracey Jacobs, spoke out against him during the highly publicised defamation trial. Tracey claimed that studios were 'reluctant' to hire Johnny because of his reputation for being late to work. He said of Tracey: 'My loyalty is the last thing anybody could question. I was with one agent for 30 years, but she spoke in court about how difficult I was.' During the Depp v. Heard trial that came to an end in June 2022, Johnny received a rally of support from fans at the Fairfax County courtroom in Virginia. Johnny and Amber's publicised legal issues began when he filed a libel lawsuit against The Sun's publisher and it's executive editor Dan Wootton over a 2018 article which included claims that he was a 'wife beater.' But in 2020, the High Court of Justice ruled in favour of The Sun's publisher and Wootton, but Johnny later sued Amber in 2019 for defamation over a 2018 op-ed article she wrote for The Washington Post. She countersued her ex-husband in 2020 and the trial officially began in April 2022. Two months later, the jury's verdict was in favour of Johnny. At the time, the star had offered his reaction to the ruling and expressed that the 'jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled.' He star also expressed, 'Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that.' Amber has since moved and settled in Spain - where she raises her three children, a daughter born in 2021 via surrogacy and she announced in May that she had also welcomed twins. Johnny has also made his return to the big screen following the trial, such as Jeanne du Barry (2023). Last year in October, Johnny insisted that he 'holds no ill will towards anyone' following the legal drama and bitter divorce from Heard. 'Honestly, I can sit here this very second and think about all the hit pieces, and how everybody was against me, and yeah yeah yeah he is off the map … endless stuff,' he told The Hollywood Reporter. 'I can remember it all. Went through it all. Some of it was not the most beautiful time, some of it was hilarious. Some of it was mad.' The actor added, 'The thing is, it simply just was, and it simply just is. So, for me, it happened. I learned, man. 'Everything that we experience, whether you're given a snow cone or walking your dog, you learn something somewhere along the way.' Johnny then explained, 'So I don't have any ill feelings toward anyone. I don't have this great reserve of hatred, because hatred requires caring. Why carry that baggage?' Johnny is preparing to hit the big screen once again for the upcoming thriller Day Drinker. The movie is being directed by Marc Webb and also stars Penelope Cruz, Madelyn Cline, Manu Rios and Javier Botet. The premise is: 'An enigmatic stranger forms an unlikely bond with a grieving bartender who lost her lover, their lives intertwining in unexpected ways,' per IMDB. A first look photo was recently released which shows an unrecognizable Depp stepping into the shoes of his character - which includes graying hair and a beard. When questioned by The Sunday Times if he has any regrets, the actor admitted, 'I have no regrets about anything - because, truly, what can we do about last week's dinner? Not a f***ing thing.'
