Shakespeare wrongly credited for words first used by women, claims Countdown star

William Shakespeare has been wrongly credited with inventing hundreds of words that may have first been used by women, Countdown's Susie Dent has claimed.
The Bard is often said to have coined around 1,700 English words, including 'bedazzle', 'puke' and 'assassination'.
But speaking on BBC Radio 4's Loose Ends podcast, Ms Dent suggested many of these words were mistakenly attributed to Shakespeare simply because his use of them in plays had been preserved.
'[H]e was their mouthpiece,' she said. 'And this is fine. He never claimed to invent these words.'
The Countdown co-host and lexicographer said some of Shakespeare 's seemingly novel expressions were probably part of everyday Elizabethan speech, but their true origins were lost because the voices of ordinary people – particularly women – had not been recorded.
'He is a master obviously, as we know, exuberant with language. But I think particularly the voices of women, which weren't recorded in those days, I think a lot of the words were probably absorbed from them as well,' she said, adding: 'He was their spokesperson.'
Ms Dent said the phenomenon of misattribution was so widespread that it had earned the nickname 'Fakespeare' among dictionary compilers.
The Channel 4 quiz show star said the pattern became clear to her during her time working on the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).
'In the OED, we give the first record of a word that we can find, many of them credited to Shakespeare,' she said.
'But regularly an email will go around saying 'Fakespeare' as the title because we found what we call an 'ante-dating', so an earlier record before Shakespeare.'
The phenomenon features in Ms Dent's debut novel, Guilty by Definition, a mystery set at the heart of the fictionalised 'Clarendon English Dictionary', published last month.
Ms Dent also told the podcast that the internet was helping dictionary compilers by contributing to the preservation of regional dialects.
She said: 'We rely on printed evidence. And that's particularly tricky with dialect, local words, because they're very much part of an oral tradition. They're not really written down.
'But now we are able to transcribe conversations on the street, thanks to the internet, which a lot of people fear when it comes to language.
'But people are swapping memories of the old words that their parents and their grandparents knew. And we have records of them now. So it's brilliant. So we're getting more and more regional vocabulary in there.'

Open-air summer Shakespeare group to debut at Buckden Towers

An open-air theatre group said it was excited to debut at the 11th Century former residence of Catherine of Aragon - the first wife of King Henry group, formerly named Shakespeare at The George, had its annual residency contract at the pub in Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire terminated by Greene King last year, after 65 24 June, it will start a run of performances of Twelfth Night at its new home in Buckden Towers, a few miles down the A1 in Milne, chair of the newly named Shakespeare at the Towers, said he was excited to hear what both new and loyal audiences thought of the historic space. The George Hotel had been an old Jacobean coaching inn where Shakespeare's plays would have been performed, and it had been an "astonishingly authentic venue" to put on the Milne, 54, said: "Every single thing has had to change - from 65 years of learning how one venue works and how the space works and what we need. It's a complete reset."[But] what's lovely about this place is it still has that historical authenticity."It formerly belonged to the bishops of Lincoln, and at one point Catherine of Aragon was kept here... It had lots of visits from kings and royalty."He continued: "It's well preserved and it really does feel like not much has changed... You could almost imagine you're here in mediaeval times, perhaps hearing of this young upcoming playwright called William something-or-other." The towers is about four miles (6.5km) away from the George, but Mr Milne anticipated the move would bring in new audiences as well as long-term added: "We are hoping to bring them with us. I'm really interested in seeing what they think, what changes they've seen, how they would compare the two experiences."I think I'm possibly even more excited by people who've never come across us before."The show will run at Buckden Towers from 24 June to 5 July this will be a captioned performance, sponsored by The Evelyn Glennie Foundation and a touch tour of the set and costumes for blind and partially sighted people before the performance on 30 June. Liverpool music festival halted after Sting's support suffers 'cardiac arrest' live on stage

Sting said the musician is 'in his prayers' as he took to the stage for the final night of 2025 On The Waterfront festival. Sting's support group The Christians had a gig in Liverpool halted mid-performance when the drummer collapsed and suffered a 'cardiac arrest'. Garry Christian had been fronting the band at a gig when he stopped and called for medical help for his bandmate. A privacy screen was then erected on the stage, as emergency responders raced to the scene. ‌ The musician was then treated at the venue before being raced to hospital. A woman who is believed to be the band's manager, Emma Bridget, announced an emotional update to the shocked crowd. She said: 'We're really hoping he is going to make it. He didn't have a pulse, he's got one now, we think. Thank you so much." ‌ The band had been performing at Liverpool's Pier Head when the drama unfolded. Emma went on: 'I'm just so sorry because Garry loves Liverpool and he wanted to put on the show of his life and we're really devastated but thank you so much.' A message was then displayed to fans after the ordeal, which read: 'We appreciate your patience and understanding. Medical staff are with the performer, and we will provide an update as soon as we can.' The group had been performing at the final night of the 2025 On The Waterfront festival. Thousands of people flocked to the English city as a host of musicians appeared. The Mirror reports the crowd was at capacity and the venue was silent as events took place on stage. There are no further updates on the drummer's condition at the moment but Sting provided information when he took to the stage to close the festival tonight. He said: 'The drummer in the band before is OK. He's in hospital. All of us are praying he's going to be fine. Our thoughts are with him.' ‌ Sting is the headliner for the concert, making his long-awaited return to Liverpool as part of his STING 3.0 World Tour. The Christians, from Liverpool, had the highest selling debut album of any artist at Island Records and international chart hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s after forming in 1985. ‌ The Christians are made up of Garry Christian (lead vocals), Roger Christian (vocals and instrumentalist), Russell Christian (keyboards, saxophone, vocals), and Henry Priestman (keyboards, guitars, vocals). Priestman, although not a relative, shared the Christian name by coincidence. Early members also included Paul Barlow on drums, Mike Bulger on guitar and vocals, and Tony Jones on bass. Roger Christian stepped away from the group in 1987 and announced he didn't want to tour, focusing on a solo album instead. He passed away in 1998 after a battle with a brain tumour. In 1995, Garry Christian moved to Paris to record his own solo album, Your Cool Mystery, effectively breaking up the band, although no formal announcement was made. The group have since reformed and have been performing again.
