Beat this weekend's heatwave to binge all 8 episodes of 'tear-jerking' thriller

This weekend is set to be a scorcher, with temperatures tippling over the 30 degree water mark. So what better way to beat the heat than set up in front of a fan with a good binge watch? Amazon Prime Video has just the thing after this week dropping all eight episodes of the hotly anticipated summer thriller We Were Liars. Based on E Lockhart's bestseller, which did numbers on BookTok, this glossy adaptation is a summer vibes machine with a twist you'll never see coming. We can't talk about that big spoiler-y final reveal, which has been one of the book's biggest talking points since it was published over a decade ago. The show's central mystery swirls around rich young thing Cadence Sinclair, played by Emily Alyn Lind, who is retreading her memories of the previous summer after she half-drowned and had no recollection of what happened. 'Something terrible happened last summer,' our heroine Cady tells us via voiceover, which is peppered throughout the show. 'I have no memory of what or who hurt me.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up until that point, her life had been a sun-drenched dream, buoyed up by her filthy-rich 'American royalty' family and a close-knit bond with her troublemaker cousins – who the family dub the titular 'liars'. Set on the family's private isle Beechwood, near the Kennedy stronghold Martha's Vineyard, this is The Summer I Turned Pretty meets a near-murder mystery, which is already ranking at the second spot on Prime Video's ranking of most popular film and TV. The novel's author was also an executive producer on the show and teased – spoiler free – the pacing of the show and how they kept the audience who had not read the book guessing. Lockhart told Deadline: 'We want[ed] to stretch out the suspense a little bit and give each, each of the liars their own experience of that big event.' Senior TV Reporter Rebecca Cook shares her take… When Cady isn't making ominous reference to her impending amnesia via voiceover, We Were Liars is largely a summer vibes machine with a big-budget soundtrack. The breathy voiceover can sound like Carrie Bradshaw's column word salad when you really tune into what she's quite repetitively saying. But whenever you start to feel bogged down in the so-so teen melodrama, some big reveal will come from another corner of the show to pull you back in. This is the show's strength: it moves at a clip and there is always something barmy happening to one of the Sinclairs. Unlike the best eat-the-rich mysteries, this is painfully lacking in the laughs department and probably takes itself a bit too seriously. But you won't regret sticking around for the final reveal to plug the gap in Cady's memory: it's so bonkers it's beyond the guessing game. Prime Video viewers have already been ploughing into the episodes of the show – and have been left emotional at the show's final twist. @Ayaaam_x wrote on X: 'I can't open my eyes from the tears. I have read and reread that book prepping for the show and still nothing could ever.' Many of the viewers have been fans of the book, which found a new audience on TikTok, with @halsteadaes saying they were 'ready to be emotionally destroyed' by the show. More Trending @itsamemikasa added: 'We Were Liars destroyed me wtf were those plot twists in the last episode.' @twoworldsapartt chimed: 'Watching this knowing what's gonna happen is making me wanna slam my head into a wall.' @dimaggioooo added: 'Just finished we were liars (haven't read the book) and OH MY GOD THE ENDING,' alongside a string of crying emojis. Steven Spielberg was ‘deeply involved' in Jurassic World: Rebirth

Steven Spielberg was 'deeply involved' in Jurassic World: Rebirth The 78-year-old director helmed the original 1993 film Jurassic Park Steven Spielberg (Image: Mike Marsland/WireImage ) Jurassic World: Rebirth writer David Koepp has said Steven Spielberg was "deeply involved" in making the movie. The 78-year-old director helmed the original 1993 film Jurassic Park, its 1997 sequel The Lost Work: Jurassic Park and has served as an executive producer on the Jurassic World series ever since, and Koepp - who wrote the first movie and its follow-up - revealed one of the main reasons he returned for Jurassic World: Rebirth was because Spielberg was "very involved" in it. ‌ Speaking to Deadline about Spielberg, the 62-year-old scribe said: "Oh, he was very involved. ‌ "That was one of the reasons I most wanted to do it. Because Steven was deeply involved from the beginning, and for the six months that we were working on the script, it was really just him and me. "I'd send him my ideas, and we'd work on them, and when you have Steven's full attention, the results can be pretty spectacular." Jurassic World: Rebirth - which stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali - follows a team of covert operatives on a mission to stop a rogue biotech organisation from unleashing weaponised dinosaurs around the world. Article continues below As the chaos escalates, the team uncovers a dark secret connected to the original Jurassic legacy. Koepp previously said Jurassic World: Rebirth - which was directed by Gareth Edwards and releases on 2 July 2025 - would capture the "spirit of the first movie". He told TheWrap: "[We were trying to evoke] the spirit of the first movie, which is the tone that we would like to get closest to." ‌ The writer added it was "the idea of starting afresh" which convinced him to return to the Jurassic series. He said: "You don't often get that chance, where they give you very few guidelines, except there must be dinosaurs in it." Even so, before he agreed to come back for Jurassic World: Rebirth, Koepp had a list of demands he gave to Universal Pictures that the studio had to meet. ‌ He explained: "Number one was – the events of the previous six movies cannot be denied or contradicted, because I hate a retcon. "[Number two was] all science must be real. [Third was] humour is oxygen." Reflecting on returning to the Jurassic series, Koepp said it was "weird and trippy" for him to step back in time for Jurassic World: Rebirth. ‌ He explained: "It even smelled the same. It felt low pressure, even though Universal might be horrified to hear that." Looking back at Jurassic Park and The Lost World, Koepp said "writing those first two movies were some of [his] favourite experiences in [his] career so far". He added: "The combination of grand adventure and real science is right up my alley. And it was fun to be able to decide on a new tone, because every three movies seems like a good time to change tone and characters in a franchise. Article continues below "It was great to be able to work solely with Steven and make up a story and think of all new characters and all in a different tone."

BBC Breakfast boss Richard Frediani takes extended leave over bullying claims

BBC Breakfast editor Richard Frediani is to take an extended period of leave after bullying allegations were made against him. It comes after industry publication Deadline reported complaints over Mr Frediani's conduct. Allegations reported by Deadline included shouting and swearing at colleagues. The publication also reported that a woman had her grievance upheld after claiming that Mr Frediani physically shook her in the newsroom. Media outlets also reported that an internal investigation is being carried out into the allegations. A BBC spokesperson said: "While we do not comment on individual cases, we take all complaints about conduct at work extremely seriously and will not tolerate behaviour that is not in line with our values. "We have robust processes in place and would encourage any staff with concerns to raise them directly with us so they can be addressed." BBC News reported that an HR advisor from the consultancy firm PwC has been brought in to support the BBC's investigation into the culture of the broadcaster's flagship morning programme. PwC has declined to comment. Mr Frediani joined the award-winning show, produced in Salford, in 2019. His role was later extended to producing News at One last year. Before joining the BBC, Mr Frediani worked for ITN, where he held senior roles on the team that produces ITV News. He accepted the Bafta Award in May for best TV news coverage of the Post Office scandal. In April an independent review into the BBC found there was not a "toxic culture" but reforms where needed to take quicker action against staff who step out of line. At the time BBC chairman Samir Shah told presenters: "After today, let me state it clearly, if you think you're too big a star or too important to live by the values of this organisation, not only are you wrong, but we will find you out." He also said he would draw "a line in the sand".
