Shanku's biryani wish sparks nutrition policy overhaul in Kerala's Anganwadis

PATHANAMTHITTA: When little Shanku's innocent demand for 'birnani' (biryani) over upma in anganwadis went viral, few could have predicted it would spark a major shift in public nutrition policy. Thanks to Health Minister Veena George and the Women and Child Development Department, that the wish has now reshaped mealtime for thousands of children across Kerala.
In a move blending policy with empathy, the state has unveiled a revamped model food menu for anganwadis, adding popular dishes like egg biryani and pulao without compromising on nutrition. The new menu is crafted to be both tasty and health-conscious, with reduced sugar and salt and an emphasis on energy-boosting, protein-rich items essential for growing children.
Veena George officially launched the new menu during the state-level inauguration of the Anganwadi Pravesanotsavam in Pathanamthitta. The initiative marks the first unified food plan to be implemented in anganwadis across the state.
Following the viral video, the minister had promised to review the food menu, leading to consultations at various levels. The nutritious meal plan also features enhanced servings of milk and eggs, now offered three days a week instead of two.

Health Minister Veena George has said that local self-governing bodies achieving Sampoorna Yoga (complete yoga integration) will receive special recognition for their efforts. This move, she said, is intended to inspire other local bodies and encourage widespread adoption of yoga practices at the grassroots level. The Minister was inaugurating the State-level International Day of Yoga celebrations online, held in Thrissur, on Saturday. The State aims to transform all panchayats, municipalities, and Corporations into fully yoga-integrated zones, with the ultimate goal of establishing Kerala as a Sampoorna Yoga State. She noted that Kerala has accorded special importance to yoga and is implementing measures to integrate it into daily life. 'As part of this effort, over 10,000 yoga clubs have already been set up across the State, and steps are under way to establish at least one yoga club in every panchayat. Provisions have also been made to train and promote yoga through AYUSH centres and wellness programmes, including yoga, have been launched in collaboration with people's health centres and community health clubs, she said. Lifestyle diseases Kerala, with the highest life expectancy in the country and among the lowest maternal and infant mortality rates, leads in health indicators. However, lifestyle diseases and rising morbidity rates remain significant challenges. The State has taken up multiple initiatives to tackle these issues, and yoga is seen as a vital tool in improving both physical and mental health, the Minister noted. 'Yoga is not just a practice but a way of life and culture and everyone should be part of it,' said the Minister. Thrissur District Collector Arjun Pandian presided over the function. Advanced pre-symptomatic treatment for spinal muscular atrophy provided in Kerala, first in India

Thiruvananthapuram: For the first time in India, pre-symptomatic treatment to an infant, diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) within days of birth, was provided in Kerala, marking a significant step in rare disease treatment. The second child of a woman from Thiruvananthapuram received the expensive drug Risdiplam for free. Health minister Veena George congratulated the entire team for delivering world-class advanced treatment, setting an example for the nation. The inability to identify genetic disorders and their risk factors early often poses a challenge for SMA treatment. However, with pre-symptomatic treatment, medication for SMA can be administered during pregnancy or within days of birth. This approach allows children to achieve 100% normal growth. The woman, also affected by SMA, sought govt assistance to save her unborn child after understanding the risk. George instructed the child health nodal officer to take necessary action. Treatment was then ensured at SAT Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. A specialised committee assessed each stage of the pregnancy to determine treatment based on the severity of the condition. Genetic counselling and adherence to protocols from similar cases in developed countries were part of the treatment process. "When both parents carry the defective SMA gene, there is a 50% chance that each of their children could inherit the disease. Studies show that in India, there is a possibility of one child being diagnosed with this disease for every 7,000 births," said an official statement. Govt's policy "Diseases may be rare, but care should not be" led to the launch of CARE project. Through this initiative, over 100 children affected by rare diseases, including SMA, receive expensive medications and corrective surgeries for spinal curvature free of cost.

Sickle Cell Anaemia: Year-long campaign in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, June 17 (UNI) To strengthen awareness about sickle cell anaemia, a year-long campaign, 'Let's Know and Prevent Sickle Cell Disease', will be launched in Kerala. The campaign, jointly organised by the Health Department and the Tribal Department, will provide awareness on topics related to sickle cell disease. We are developing special messages, including in tribal dialects, for patients, pregnant women, and children affected by the disease. The logo of the campaign was officially launched by Health Minister Veena George. Special screening is ongoing to identify sickle cell patients in tribal communities. The state government launched a comprehensive sickle cell treatment programme in 2007. Screening tests and follow-up treatments are being conducted in tribal areas like Wayanad and Attappady. The project was comprehensively implemented in 2023 by the Centre, targeting regions with a high prevalence of the disease across 17 selected states at the national level. In Kerala, the programme was extended to Nilambur, Attappady blocks, Kannur, Kasaragod and Idukki. UNI DS ARN
