Illinois Red Cross asks for donations, provides safety tips as ‘Giving Day' approaches
CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — The Red Cross has helped nearly 30 people in Central Illinois after six different fires damaged or destroyed their homes last week.
After fires broke out in Champaign, Paxton, Danville, Paris, Peoria and Kilbourne, the Red Cross provided emergency assistance. This included food, toiletries, and health and mental health services.

'Our hearts go out to our neighbors who were impacted by these fires,' Kellie O'Connell, CEO of Illinois Red Cross, said. 'Because these disasters can happen anytime, anywhere, please help stay safe by testing your smoke alarms each month and practicing your home fire escape plan until everyone in your household can escape in two minutes or less.'
Now, the Red Cross is hoping that Central Illinois residents will give back for Red Cross Giving Day on March 26. The Red Cross said that there are several ways community members can give back, and also help their neighbors in need:
Donate — The Red Cross said you can help those impacted by disasters by making a gift to Red Cross Disaster relief here, or by calling 800-733-2767.
Volunteer — You can sign up for opportunities with your local chapter here.
Prepare — Protect your family from extreme weather in advance. Visit this website for tips to create your own disaster preparedness action plan.
For home fire safety resources and tips, visit the Red Cross' website. So far this year, local Red Cross volunteers have helped hundreds of people affected by home fires in Central Illinois communities, according to the organization.

East San Jose house fire spreads to neighboring home, 3 displaced
Three people have been displaced after a two-alarm fire broke out at an East San Jose neighborhood Thursday afternoon, firefighters said. Around 12:10 p.m., firefighters were called to a home on the 3300 block of Onslow Way. Thursday's fire took place less than a mile from where the Ranch Place Fire broke out Tuesday afternoon. The fire, which prompted evacuation orders, burned more than 90 acres before it was contained Wednesday morning.

San Francisco early morning residential fire displaces 12
At least a dozen people have been displaced following a one-alarm residential fire in San Francisco early Tuesday morning. Around 3:45 a.m., the fire department announced on social media that they responded to a residence on San Jose Avenue, between Sadowa and Broad streets. In a subsequent update, firefighters said the fire was controlled after several minutes and was contained to the attic. 1-ALARM FIRE 2000 Block of San Jose Ave, STRUCTURE FIRE San Francisco Fire Department is currently on scene of an active one alarm structure fire. Crews on scene are checking for extension in the walls and roof. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Champaign County is set to host a one-day household hazardous waste collection event later this summer. This drop-off event, sponsored by the Illinois EPA, is taking place on Aug. 9 and is open to all Illinois residents. Residents must pre-register for this event at by selecting an available time slot between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Urbana crop research lab's future uncertain; what could this mean for consumers The online registration begins June 16, and the event will take place at the State Farm Center in the southwest parking lot off Saint Mary's Road. Immediately upon reserving a time, a confirmation email and/or text will be sent. Residents who register will also receive a postcard in the U.S. Mail five to 10 days before the event, which serves as their ticket to the event.
