Ambulance agreement with FirstHealth considered successful
On March 3, the Lee County commissioners gave an update on the 2024 metrics posted by the FirstHealth-Lee County EMS services.
The agreement between the county and FirstHealth of the Carolinas Inc. was approved in 2021 and will expire in June 2026.
Matthew Prestwood, vice president of operations for Moore Regional Hospital, presented the information.
In 2024, FirstHealth and Lee County Emergency services crews responded to a total of 10,254 calls, with 6,696 patients transported primarily to Central Carolina Hospital, Prestwood said.
The average response time — the time it takes from dispatch to arrival — was 6.92 minutes, which is under the goal of 8.59.
'They have consistently met this critical metric,' Prestwood said. 'All the response requirements have been met each month through the contract period.'
Lee County, compared to other FirstHealth medical facilities in the area, rates near the top of the group.
'If you look at Lee County and compare it to other counties that we serve, you'll see the other counties we serve, you'll see that it's very close to the top here,' Prestwood said.
Chatham County has 'slightly more transports, but Lee County's transports grew by about 300.
'One of the key metrics we also check is where are we taking the patients,' Prestwood said. 'Most of the patients continue going to Central Carolina. That is certainly consistent throughout the contract and where those folks are getting care.'
FirstHealth has increased vehicles to continue posting below-average response times.
That includes five Advanced Life Support ambulances, a quick response vehicle for the supervisor on duty and a full-time chief and director, Prestwood said.
Since entering into the agreement, EMS base locations have gone from one to three 'strategically located throughout Lee County,' he said. The two added bases are Northview and Carolina Trace fire departments.
'Over the time of the contract, FirstHealth has made a significant investment in Lee County,' Prestwood said.
Base pay rate for paramedics starts at $28 with the starting rate for EMTs now at $21 per hour.
'We've invested over $312,168 in employee wages across the FirstHealth-Lee system,' he said. 'The team has many successes.'

9-year-old girl recounts moment she was bitten by shark while snorkeling in Florida
A 9-year-old girl who was bitten on the hand by a shark in Florida is speaking out about the terrifying moment she was attacked. Leah Lendel was snorkeling near Boca Grande on June 11 when "something hard bit me and then tried to tug me away," she said at a news conference Thursday alongside her parents and the doctors who treated her. "Then I pick up my hand and it's all in blood," Leah said. "Then I started screaming with my mom." "There was so much blood in the water right next to me," Leah's mom, Nadia Lendel, said at the news conference. "In an instant, I knew it's a shark attack." "I just started to scream to my husband," Nadia Lendel recalled. Meanwhile, Leah's "instincts kicked in" and she ran out of the water, her mom said. "Then my dad was with me," Leah said. "He picked me up and we ran to the road." Leah's parents expressed their gratitude for the construction workers who were eating lunch on the beach and immediately ran to help them call 911 and put Leah's arm in a tourniquet. Leah's dad said EMS then responded within minutes. Tampa General Hospital doctors praised the first responders for choosing to fly the two hours in the helicopter to their hospital where they said they had the expertise to help Leah within the six-hour window to save the tendons, tissue and muscle. Doctors said they operated on Leah's hand less than an hour after she came through the hospital doors. At the hospital, "I was trying to hold myself together," said Leah's dad, Jay Lendel. "I think I was crying more than she was." Tampa General Hospital Dr. Alfred Hess said luckily a shark bite is not jagged, but leaves a clean cut on the wrist that doesn't ruin all the tissue. First Leah's bone was stabilized and then doctors said they worked on blood flow. Some blood vessels were taken from Leah's leg to help get blood flow back to her hand, the doctors said. Leah will next undergo physical therapy, her doctors said, and eventually the pins in her hand will be removed. "I'm just thankful for everybody," Jay Lendel said. "I'm just very thankful she's alive." Meanwhile, another shark bite was reported on Tuesday on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The victim suffered a non-life-threatening injury to the leg and was airlifted to a hospital in Savannah, Georgia, according to the Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue. There were 28 unprovoked shark bites in the U.S. last year, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History's International Shark Attack File. Florida recorded the most with 14; South Carolina had two.

Progress made one year since SAFER program launched in Worthington
WORTHINGTON, Ohio (WCMH) — It's been one year since Worthington's Division of Fire and EMS started a new program called SAFER. It stands for Social Assistance for Emergency Reduction. A small number of residents can often represent a large number of repeated emergency calls. The department said many of those calls could be prevented if residents got connected to needed services. 'So it was pretty obvious that a social worker would be a good link where the social worker could link the resident or the patient with the resources that are out there that we don't know about,' Assistant Chief of EMS and Community Risk Reduction in Worthington Jennifer Cochran said. That human link is Nate Hall, who specializes in connecting at-risk residents with community resources at no cost. Five-story apartment building nears construction in Franklinton 'We'll go out a lot of times after EMS or police interactions and speak with residents, kind of find out what the emergency is, what's going on, and how we can help and prevent future emergencies,' Hall said. He said one of the most common calls the department receives is for falls. Previously, crews could only help that person up and offer a ride to the hospital. Now, Hall is there to do follow-ups and prevent these emergencies from happening again. 'We can go out and look at ways to keep their home safe. Things like grab bars, medical equipment, and bringing in resources. We can get ERS devices, the buttons they press if they fall,' he said. Cochran said after a year of the program, it is already paying off. 'Connecting them to those resources naturally decreased the 911 calls,' she said. Hall typically does visits following 911 calls but he said you can also contact the program at safer@ Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
