Mother's Day 2025: 5 yoga poses for mothers to recharge and relax

Hindustan Times11-05-2025

Mother's Day 2025: Mothers work around the clock, with zero off days, whether it's waking up before the crack of dawn to pack your school lunch or staying up late to tend to you when you're sick. Amid the endless responsibilities of household work, they still find time to surprise you with little gifts or baked goods straight out of the oven. But with all the work of caring for everyone, mothers often may get exhausted, although they will hide it behind a smile.
On the occasion of Mother's Day on May 11, let's take a moment to encourage mothers to relax and care for themselves. And one of the simplest ways to unwind and relieve stress is through yoga.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Saurabh Bothra, yoga instructor, CEO and Co-Founder of Habuild, an online program of yoga classes, shared the importance of yoga for mothers.
He explained how mothers face burnout, and emphasised, 'Motherhood is a lifelong journey that evolves with each passing year. It's no wonder so many moms feel emotionally depleted, physically worn out, and mentally overstimulated. The term 'mom burnout' isn't just a buzzword; it's a lived experience for millions of women. According to surveys, 50% of women experience chronic stress due to work-life imbalance and approximately 22% of new mothers in India experience postpartum depression within two weeks of delivery. And the expectation to do it all 'perfectly' only adds to the pressure.'

Yoga has a transformative power, which is why many incorporate it into their daily routine as a habit for holistic self-care. Saurabh Bothra elaborated on its benefits, especially for mothers.
He said, ' For moms, yoga offers space to reconnect with the body, regulate emotions, and release tension stored from years of caring for others first. Yoga gently reduces stress by calming the nervous system, lowers cortisol levels, and enhances emotional resilience. Physically, it strengthens the muscles you rely on every day, whether it's lifting a child or standing for long hours. And importantly, it doesn't demand perfection; it simply invites presence. Even sleep and energy levels often improve with a consistent yoga practice.'
Saurabh shared these yoga poses that mothers can practice in just 10–15 minutes a day:

From river banks to parks, UP gears up for grand Yoga Day events with mass participation

Developed by the Urban Development Department, these parks, are equipped with clean drinking water, seating arrangements, and dedicated yoga spaces. The state government has developed over 100 yoga parks in the urban local bodies to provide permanent space for yoga practice, where special events involving children, senior citizens, and foreign delegates are lined up for Saturday. Lucknow/Varanasi, Jun 20 (PTI) On the eve of the 11th International Yoga Day, Uttar Pradesh has made elaborate preparations for mass participation across cities, from the ghats of Varanasi and Prayagraj to Ayodhya, and parks across Lucknow, Kanpur, Mathura and Ghaziabad. The initiative aligns with this year's theme — 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health' — and is designed to promote a year-round culture of health and wellness. Lucknow now has nine yoga parks, including at Gulab Park, Swarn Jayanti Park, and ED Park. Kanpur features spaces like Nana Rao Park and Buddha Park, while Jhansi leads with 12 parks, followed by Mathura-Vrindavan with eight. Ayodhya and Firozabad have three each, while Ghaziabad has developed 10. In Varanasi, yoga will be practised at locations like Namo Ghat, Assi Ghat, Ravidas Ghat, and Shaheed Udyan. On Friday, specially-abled children, slum dwellers and senior citizens gathered for a special yoga programme at Mahanagar in the state capital under the aegis of Lucknow University, organised by yoga practitioner Roma Hemvani. Saurabh, a specially-abled child, performed aasanas while another performer, Srishti Kashyap, enthralled the audience with a yoga dance involving young kids, while Kartik Hemvani performed 'jal yoga'. Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been selected as an 'iconic spot' for Yoga Day, where events have been scheduled across the city, with the main programme to be held at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Cabinet minister Suresh Khanna will attend the event as the chief guest, while Union minister Anupriya Patel will be present at Assi Ghat. In Prayagraj, 'water yoga' will be performed at the Sangam, for which instructors are teaching children to perform asanas in the water. Ayodhya is expecting a big turnout at Ram ki Paidi, where around 4,000 people, including seers and public representatives, will perform yoga on Saturday morning. District Magistrate Nikhil Tikaram Funde and IG Praveen Kumar confirmed that all preparations have been made for the event, which will also feature a live broadcast of Prime Minister Modi's address. A delegation from South Africa is slated to attend the event. Yoga Day will also be celebrated at Ayodhya's Gulab Bari, all tehsil and block headquarters, and gram panchayat offices. Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana, who led a pre-Yoga Day event at Gandhi Park in Maharajpur, appealed to the people to make yoga a daily habit. In a message shared on social media, Mahana said, 'Yoga not only strengthens physical and mental health, but also instills discipline, balance, and positive energy in life.' Monsoon scalp struggles: Doctor shares 4 reasons why dandruff flares up during rainy season and how to manage

Monsoon season brings cool air and cosy weather, but it also quietly invites trouble with a host of skin and haircare issues, particularly increasing dandruff. Even when your haircare routine seems in check and going all fine, the sudden onslaught of humidity, sweat, and rain during monsoon may throw your scalp health completely haywire. You need to be well-informed about seasonal dandruff to be able to tackle it. Keep your scalp health in check with the help of appropriate haircare routine.(Shutterstock) ALSO READ: Can you get rid of dandruff permanently? Dermatologist answers Dr Vishalakshi Viswanath, Consultant Dermatology at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, shared with HT Lifestyle how dandruff increases during monsoon and how one can manage it easily. Explaining the basics, she elaborated, 'Dandruff is not merely a dry scalp or just a cosmetic problem. The causes of dandruff are multifactorial. Increase in sebum production (oiliness of hair), colonisation of the scalp by a yeast fungus (Malassezia) and individual susceptibility (genetic, hormonal, stress) can contribute to dandruff issues. Many seasonal factors disrupt the scalp skin barrier function, leading to increased sebum production and yeast colonisation, thereby worsening dandruff.' Dr Viswanath shared a guide, outlining all the essentials you need to know about monsoon dandruff, from the reasons, treatments, to when one should visit a doctor: 4 reasons why dandruff worsens in monsoons Dandruff increases because of the change in weather conditions during monsoon.(Shutterstock) 1. Increased humidity: High moisture content and humidity cause an increase in scalp yeast. 2. Rainwater exposure and wet hair: A damp environment facilitates Malassezia overgrowth 3. Excessive scalp sweating: A humid atmosphere, leading to excessive scalp sweating and oiliness, causes scalp irritation and inflammation 4. Infrequent hair wash: Often, people avoid regular hair wash during monsoons, leading to an oily scalp and an increase in yeast How to control dandruff? 1. Anti-dandruff shampoos: Shampoos are the mainstay of dandruff control; ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione, and salicylic acid-based shampoos are often available over the counter (OTC). Newer anti-fungal-based shampoos can be used in stubborn cases on a dermatologist's recommendation. 2. Regular hair wash: Twice or thrice weekly hair wash with a leave-on time of five to ten minutes for the action of actives in the shampoos should be done. 3. Maintain scalp hygiene: Keep the hair dry, avoid tying wet hair, dry your hair gently if you get wet in the rain, avoid harsh hair products (SLS, parabens) or heavy oils and leave oil on the scalp only for a few hours. 4. Maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle: A balanced diet rich in zinc, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, along with stress management, can help prevent dandruff flares. When to visit a doctor? If there is excess flaking, itching, oozing or your dandruff is uncontrolled with OTC products, do consult a dermatologist. If dandruff is left untreated, it can progress to seborrheic dermatitis and involve areas beyond the scalp, disrupt scalp health, lead to hair thinning, and cause secondary skin issues like forehead acne. Dandruff has to be differentiated from scalp psoriasis. The dermat concluded, 'Appropriate consultation with board certified dermatologist for individualised treatment approach and stubborn dandruff is mandatory.'
