Serena Williams crip-walked at the Super Bowl because Kendrick Lamar asked her to, she says

Yahoo12-02-2025

All those fan theories about Serena Williams' Super Bowl LIX halftime show cameo appear to be wrong, according to the tennis legend herself.
The retired athlete, who crip-walked during Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us" verse during Sunday's big game, took part in the show simply because the rapper — who like Williams hails from Compton — asked her to.
"When @kendricklamar and team called and was like 'we've been trying to do something forever, what about this? We loved your crip walk at the Olympics after you won the gold medal,'" Williams wrote Tuesday on Instagram.
"I'm like Super Bowl? Are you serious? When in the world would I ever be able to dance at a superbowl? (Never) let's do it!" she said. "I knew my winning dance after the @olympics would pay off one day. End of story."

During Lamar's buzzed-about performance of 'Not Like Us" on Sunday, the camera cut to his fellow Compton native doing the C-walk on an elevated platform placed on the field in New Orleans' Caesars Superdome. Williams' surprise appearance set the internet ablaze — much to the delight of those celebrating Lamar's "petty" display and to the chagrin of one ESPN sports commentator who put her down for "trolling" her reported ex.
That all seemed to roll off Williams' back. The Wyn Beauty co-founder accompanied her Instagram post with a behind-the-scenes video of her game-day prep and other snippets from the performance, which she referred to as "the best 10 seconds of my life."
Williams, 43, took heat back in 2012 for that very footwork after besting Maria Sharapova for the gold medal during the London Olympics. She did it again at Wimbledon in 2023.
"Man I did not crip walk like that at Wimbledon," she joked in a separate video posted Sunday. "Oh, I would've been fined."

Meanwhile, her husband — Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian — celebrated her performance and the meaning behind it.
'Some of y'all have no idea how criticized Serena was for this same dance at Wimbledon 13 years ago and it shows. ...,' Ohanian wrote Monday on X. 'This is bigger than the music.' He included coverage of the backlash Williams faced then too.
Netizens were also quick to suggest that Lamar masterminded the athlete's appearance as the latest coup in his simmering beef with Toronto rapper Drake.
The "God's Plan" rapper, who has taken legal action against Universal Music Group regarding his portrayal in "Not Like Us," was rumored to be romantically linked to Williams in the early 2010s, and he reportedly alluded to Williams in his songs 'Worst Behavior' and 'Nothings Into Somethings."
Another of Drake's exes, SZA, also joined Lamar onstage Sunday to sing "Luther" and "All of the Stars" with him.

ESPN Claims Aaron Rodgers Had Say in Steelers' George Pickens Trade

ESPN Claims Aaron Rodgers Had Say in Steelers' George Pickens Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A stunning development has surfaced this week that links the two most newsworthy moves of the NFL offseason - both of which involved the Pittsburgh Steelers. Advertisement Pittsburgh, shortly after trading for and singing DK Metcalf, called it quits with top receiver George Pickens by trading him to the Dallas Cowboys for draft compensation. Then, free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers made it official that he would, as many expected, be signing with Pittsburgh for his 21st season in the league. Now reports are saying the first move was made in preparation for the next one. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Steelers felt pressured to trade Pickens with Rodgers and potential locker room tension in mind. 'The Steelers moved on from Pickens for a few reasons,' Fowler writes. 'His maturity issues were well-known within Pittsburgh's locker room and front office. So, the Steelers made the evaluation that Pickens and Rodgers probably would not hit it off.' Advertisement Pickens' history of on-field fights and tardy attendance to team functions have been well documented. He may be just 24 years old, but the character concerns were real, and Mike Tomlin, among the sternest head coaches around, had had enough. But now here comes Rodgers, who may not be the easiest guy to get along with, either. Will Rodgers be an "upgrade" in maturity? Certainly, but that doesn't eliminate all of the drama that has seemed to follow Rodgers with greater intensity as of late. Would Pickens and Rodgers have meshed? Probably not, but that's all an assumption. Pickens is entering a contract year, and all indications show that he's on the straight and narrow in Dallas so far. Rodgers likely knows he's near the end of the road, so maybe he could clean up his frequent controversies and attention-seeking ploys in search of a successful last ride. Advertisement Or not. That forces the Steelers to have to pick between the two. While it's unclear whether Rodgers demanded Pickens be moved before he signs, that could be a plausible story here also. If you're into conspiracies - like Rodgers - maybe that's an explanation of the move. Realistically, the move to favor the quarterback should offer enough to be justified. Pittsburgh had swung and missed on any quarterback options to this point, and having just locked down Metcalf, they valued a future Hall of Famer under center more than a young receiver prospect who isn't even as proven as his replacement. There's a strong possibility that these moves - however much they have to do with one another - could still pay major dividends to both franchises. Advertisement Dallas finds an electric receiver to relieve pressure from All-Pro centerpiece CeeDee Lamb, and Pittsburgh finds the best quarterback option available at a team-friendly price. Drama may come regardless, but at least Pittsburgh played it smart. Better to be safe than sorry. Related: Is Aaron Rodgers 'In The Best Shape'? ESPN analyst Jay Bilas reveals what he likes best about projected No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg

Cooper Flagg is on the verge of becoming the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA draft, and the National College Player of the Year recently earned praise from ESPN analyst Jay Bilas. Flagg led Duke to the Final Four, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks on 38.5% shooting from 3-point range. He became the 22nd player in program history to be named a consensus first-team All-American. The 6-foot-8 forward established himself as the overwhelming favorite to be the No. 1 pick because of his size, athleticism and ability to affect games on both ends of the court. Bilas, speaking on the "Awful Announcing" podcast with Brandon Contes, named his favorite trait about Flagg. The one thing that stands out about Cooper Flagg, to me, above all others, and we can talk about the attributes -- physically, athletically, how he shoots it, how he handles it, how he passes it and how he defends -- but the thing I like about him best is he is not one who is interested in numbers. What he does is he makes the right play on that play and then he winds up stacking the right play over and over again and then by the end of the game, he has compiled really impressive numbers. Flagg entered the season with tremendous expectations as the consensus top recruit in the class of 2024. He was highly touted as the likely top pick in the draft and lived up to the hype after becoming the face of the sport this past season. The 18-year-old led the Blue Devils in total points (709), rebounds (277), assists (156) and blocks per game. He is highly regarded for his ability to process plays in real-time and his decision-making with the ball in his hands, while also constantly adding new skills to his arsenal. After trading away cornerstone Luka Dončić, the Dallas Mavericks hope Flagg can step in and be their long-term solution. Should Flagg indeed hear his name called first on Wednesday, the ACC Freshman of the Year will become the sixth Blue Devil to be selected as the top pick. "I think he is the best freshman Duke has ever had, and that is saying something given the freshmen that Duke has had over the last 30-40 years, maybe even beyond that," Bilas said. "He is barely 18 years old right now, and the polish and maturity he shows... People talk about will Dallas trade the pick, I just can't imagine a scenario where you trade that because he is the future for them."
