Prime Minister Anwar congratulates South Korea's new president Lee Jae-myung, seeks stronger ties

He said that this marks a turning point for South Korea, a nation that has emerged from a period of intense contest and scrutiny with resilience and democratic resolve. 'The people have spoken for renewal of trust, of institutions, and of national purpose,' he said in a Facebook post today. 'I welcome the opportunity to work with President Lee to deepen the friendship between our nations: in trade and technology, in peace and security, and the enduring ties between our peoples.' Malaysia-South Korea ties were elevated to a Strategic Partnership in November 2024, a milestone reflecting both nations' shared ambitions. Anwar said Malaysia, as Chair of Asean for 2025, hopes to see Asean play a more prominent role in South Korea's regional outlook. South Korea currently chairs the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). 'As Chairs of Asean and APEC in 2025, respectively, Malaysia and South Korea are well placed to lead impactful regional initiatives. 'In a time of global flux, a deeper partnership between Southeast Asia and South Korea will be indispensable to us all,' he said. Anwar also wished Lee wisdom and success in the journey ahead and said he looks forward to meeting him in Kuala Lumpur this October for the Asean Summit, and again in Gyeongju, South Korea, for the Apec Economic Leaders' Meeting later that month. Lee formally began his five-year term today after the National Election Commission (NEC) confirmed his election victory during a plenary session. ‘Superteam' party of KJ, Rafizi, Syed Saddiq won't work, say analysts
An Umno Supreme Council member recently suggested that Khairy Jamaluddin, Rafizi Ramli, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and other political outliers form their party. PETALING JAYA : A political 'superteam' featuring big names like Khairy Jamaluddin, Rafizi Ramli and Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman might look good on paper, but won't go far in Malaysia's political terrain, analysts have warned. Personality conflicts and differing strategies by these high-profile politicians could sink a new party before it gained traction, says public policy specialist Kartini Aboo Talib of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. 'Superteams may fail because of clashing egos, different leadership styles, undefined roles, or competing strategies and interests,' she told FMT. 'Unless each person is willing to give and take, and share the same goal of defeating a common political opponent, it's not going to work.' The idea of a new party was floated by Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi, who joked that high-profile but politically displaced leaders like Khairy, Rafizi and others should form a party together with 'solid bargaining power'. However, Malaysia has a long history of failed third forces, from Parti Socialis Malaysia to Pejuang to even Muda, all of which struggled to gain ground against dominant coalitions. Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said Malaysia's political ecosystem still revolves around parties with deep grassroots support. 'The names that are mentioned have one thing in common, that is, they are very critical of their party, whether current or former,' he said. 'But you need more than criticism and charisma. You need a membership base and a working party machinery.' Azmi cited the limited electoral success achieved by the youth-based Muda, despite Syed Saddiq's fame, saying that a party cannot survive on charisma or non-member support alone. 'It doesn't work that way. That's why Umno, PKR, DAP, PAS and Bersatu remain dominant because they have a strong grassroots base,' he said.

New AI-cyber faculty to drive TVET

ARMING students with skills in their respective fields is no longer enough in technical and vocational education and training (TVET). What is increasingly vital is preparing them for the future through training in artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity. That is the mission Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) has undertaken with the recent inauguration of its Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity (FAIX). The launch of the initiative – the latest under the National TVET 2025 agenda – was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the National TVET Day 2025 Opening Ceremony, held at the Melaka International Trade Centre on June 12. UTeM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Massila Kamalrudin said FAIX has been equipped with 13 state-of-the-art laboratories that allow students and researchers to explore advanced technologies in a conducive and competitive environment. 'Some 1,040 local students are expected to form the inaugural intake in October, marking a significant start to the faculty's official operations,' she said in a press release. She added that the university's role is not limited to supporting the latest national TVET agenda through academic, research and innovation efforts in the fields of AI and cybersecurity alone. 'UTeM also serves as a backbone for Malaysia in producing skilled professional talent through technology-based training under a comprehensive and adaptive TVET approach. 'The establishment of FAIX further strengthens the importance of applied AI across various disciplines, including engineering, business, automation, and smart systems. 'This cross-disciplinary approach is key to delivering comprehensive, sustainable and high-value technology solutions to both industry and the nation,' she said. Noting that AI and cybersecurity are essential – and no longer optional – fields in today's digital era, she added that FAIX serves as a national reference centre and a hub for research and innovation in applied AI and cybersecurity, in line with industry needs and the country's aspirations. 'The launch of FAIX marks UTeM's commitment to being a pioneer in developing high-tech TVET talent and in becoming a relevant, responsive and proactive technical higher education institution prepared for the future,' she said. Also present at the National TVET Day 2025 Opening Ceremony were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
