NEW DELHI: In an attempt to distance his government from the Bengaluru stampede, Karnataka chief minister
Siddaramaiah
on Wednesday reiterated that the RCB team felicitation event held in front of Vidhana Soudha on June 4 was not organised by the state government.
He said the programme on the steps of Vidhana Soudha was arranged by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
"On June 4, the Karnataka State Cricket Association and RCB organised a felicitation programme for players. I was invited at 11.29 am that day and I accepted it. The chief secretary also called me. I had said 'go ahead.' The governor also attended the event. There are media reports that the governor had come to the event on his own.
It is not correct," Siddaramaiah said.

Talking to reporters, he said, "Political secretary to the CM K Govindraj (who has now been removed from the post) rang up Raj Bhavan and handed over the call to me stating that the governor was also coming. I spoke to the governor and told him that I'm going to the felicitation event. You too please come. I called him."
"So, the governor too attended the felicitation event, which ended in 20 minutes as there was rain and both o

This is what happened. Newspapers and TV channels have reported that no one had invited the governor and he had come on his own, so I'm giving this clarification," he added.
When asked whether an official invitation had been sent to the governor before the call, Siddaramaiah said, "I don't know who invited or not. I called him as I was attending the event."
The stampede that occurred during celebrations outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Indian Premier League (IPL) victory celebrations claimed 11 lives.
Following the Bengaluru stampede, the Karnataka Government on June 5 suspended top police officials at the Cubbon Park Police Station and formed a one-man commission under a retired High Court Judge to probe the incident.
When asked about increasing compensation for the stampede victims, Siddaramaiah said that Rs 25 lakh has been given to the families of each person who died. "We will discuss it in the cabinet," he added.
Replying to a question about the opposition BJP's protest demanding his resignation over the stampede, he said the opposition is doing politics.
"They will do politics. The BJP lies and misleads the people and then demands resignation. During Kumbh Mela 40-50 people were killed due to stampede. Did they demand resignation then? A bridge collapsed on the inauguration day, people were killed. Did they demand the PM's resignation? How many were killed in the Godhra incident. Who was the CM then in Gujarat? During Covid without oxygen supply people died. Did Basavaraj Bommai (former Karnataka CM from BJP) resign then?" he said.

Ishan Kishan to make county debut with Nottinghamshire, inks two-match deal
India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has joined Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club on a two-match County Championship deal, the English side announced on its X (formerly twitter) handle on Friday evening. Kishan, who has played all three formats for India, will be available for selection for the first-class fixtures against Yorkshire at home ground Trent Bridge starting Sunday while the next game will be away at Taunton against Somerset. The Patna-born Jharkhand cricketer will serve as a short-term replacement for World Test Championship-winning South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne. The Protea will be away on national duty to play a two-Test series in Zimbabwe. Kishan turned out for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) where he scored a 45-ball century against Rajasthan Royals and remained unbeaten on 106 from 47 balls. "I'm feeling very excited to get my first taste of playing county cricket in England, and it will be a great chance to showcase my skills," Ishan was quoted as saying by the club website. "I want to make sure I am the best cricketer I can be, and playing in English conditions will really help me to learn new skills. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Forget Furosemide, Use This Household Item To Help Drain Edema Fluid WellnessGuide Learn more Undo Trent Bridge is such a famous ground that is well-known in India and around the world, and I am really excited that I will be playing there," the southpaw added. Meanwhile, speaking on Kishan's inclusion to the squad, Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores said, "We're all very pleased to have secured the services of Ishan for these next two Championship fixtures while Kyle is away with South Africa." A wicketkeeper-batter himself during his playing days, the former Three Lions player and coach added, "We want players to be themselves and to bring their own game, and something that especially excites me about Ishan is how keen he is to be involved in county cricket. He brings proven quality in his ball-striking, as a hard-hitting middle-order batter, but while he's still developing his red-ball game, this spell will be really beneficial for him, and for us. "

Rishabh Pant sensed danger one ball before losing his wicket, told Ravindra Jadeja 'Same jagah maare ja raha hai'
Rishabh Pant overcame the tough IPL season, and the switch to Test cricket instantly helped him regain form. The left-handed batter scored a brilliant century in the opening Test match against England at Leeds. Pant, playing his first match as vice-captain in Tests, owned the stage with his outrageous shots all around the park to hit his seventh century in the format. He once again displayed his fearless approach against a team that is known for their ultra-attacking Bazball approach, and reached the century with a six. Rishabh Pant was dismissed for 134 in the first innings of Leeds Test.(Action Images via Reuters) He was dismissed LBW, offering no shot to Josh Tongue to end an innings that featured 84 runs in boundaries. A few labelled his dismissal a brain-fade moment, but the broadcasters showcased a video after his dismissal of the ball prior to Tongue trapping him. Pant was seen telling his batting partner Ravindra Jadeja, 'Sooja diya hai yaar isne maar-maar ke, same jagah maare ja raha hai(My knee is swelled up, he is hitting me in the same place).' On the next delivery, Tongue bowled a delivery which nipped back in and hit his pads again but this time he got dismissed LBW. Also Read | Sanjiv Goenka reacts to Rishabh Pant's outrageous century to forget ghosts of IPL 2025 with LSG: 'Reaching his ton…' Rishabh Pant breaks Mahendra Singh Dhoni's record Meanwhile, with the brilliant knock, he got past legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni to become the wicketkeeper with the most Test centuries for India. It was his first Test century since September 2024 when he scored 109 against Bangladesh. In 90 Tests, Dhoni had scored 4,876 runs with six tons and 33 fifties at an average of 38.09 and remains the highest run-scorer as an Indian wicketkeeper-batter in Tests. Pant, who completed 3,000 runs during this innings of 134 off 178 balls (12x4; 6x6), also has 15 fifties in 44 Tests and averages nearly 44. Pant's performance drew praise from batting great Sachin Tendulkar, who commended the wicketkeeper-batter's clever use of technique—particularly highlighting his well-executed paddle sweep as a mark of smart, situational batting. "Rishabh's falling paddle sweep is not accidental. It is intentional and extremely clever. Going down with the shot allows him to get under the ball and scoop it over leg slip with control," Tendulkar wrote on his social media handle.

Sanjiv Goenka goes over the moon after Rishabh Pant's century as LSG boss calls own captain ‘future of Indian cricket'
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner Sanjiv Goenka went over the moon with a special praise for Rishabh Pant after the India wicketkeeper's 134 against England in the ongoing first Test against England in Leeds. In a match which saw India playing without the likes of Virat Kohli an Rohit Sharma, Pant's hundred, along with those of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, marks the beginning of a new era. Not only the troika scored hundreds, but also put India in complete control of the Test match on Day 2. Goenka didn't forget to mention Jaiswal and Gill but gave a special nod to his captain (Pant is the captain of LSG) for the audacity shown by the Indian wicketkeeper batter to reach his three-figure mark with a six. 'Three's a charm with brilliant centuries from@ybj_19, @ShubmanGill, and now@RishabhPant17. Rishabh reaching his ton with a six speaks volumes about the future of Indian cricket. A commanding start to the series. #INDvsENG,' Goenka wrote on X. This was Pant's second consecutive hundred at top level cricket. His previous century came in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) when he scored an unbeaten 118 against eventual winners Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). With this hundred, Pant also went past former captain MS Dhoni for most hundreds by designated Indian wicketkeepers. While Pant has seven so far, Dhoni finished with six.
