Google opens Asia Pacific (APAC's) first safety centre in Hyderabad; to tackle AI fraud, cybercrime; CM Revanth Reddy hails Telangana's tech rise
HYDERABAD: Tech giant Google unveiled its first safety engineering centre (GSEC) in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region and its fourth globally after Munich, Dublin, and Malaga (Spain), in Hyderabad on Wednesday.
GSEC India is housed within what is Google's largest base outside the US and was also its first port of call in India in 2004.
An official statement said GSEC India will not only address the rapidly evolving threat landscape of India, which faces projected cybercrime losses of up to Rs 20,000 crore by 2025, but will also serve as a global hub of safety innovation driven by a combination of AI-powered threat detection, ecosystem collaboration, and policy measures.
Heather Adkins, vice president of engineering, Google Security, said GSEC India will serve as a global lighthouse for their digital safety and security efforts. She said Google has been investing in security and safety teams in Hyderabad over the years and will be looking at investing in hiring the best talent for the centre, which is learnt to have started with around 200-250 engineers.
Pivotal moment in T's journey as cybersecurity hub: Revanth
The centre will primarily focus on keeping end users safe from online fraud and scams, strengthening cybersecurity for govt and enterprise infrastructure, and building artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly.

It will deploy advanced AI and large language models (LLMs) to power real-time scam alerts on Android, strengthen Google Play Protect, and enhance fraud detection.
GSEC India will also tackle AI-driven deception through adversarial testing, AI-assisted red teaming, and tools like SynthID to watermark AI-generated content while focusing on ecosystem collaboration and intelligence sharing through platforms like the Global Signals Exchange (GSE).
It will also advance research in areas like Post-Quantum Cryptography through partnerships with academia.
Flagging off the facility, chief minister A Revanth Reddy said the first-of-its-kind centre in the Asia-Pacific marks a pivotal moment in Telangana's journey as a global cybersecurity innovation hub.
"Google and Hyderabad are old friends... Google today has nearly 7,000 Googlers who call Hyderabad their home," he said, pointing out that the new centre affirms Hyderabad's crucial role in developing privacy, safety, and cyber-defence solutions and will attract top-tier safety engineering talent to the state.
He said the Telangana govt was focused on growing to a $1 trillion economy by 2035 and a $3 trillion economy by 2047.
"Our population is 2.5% of India's population but contributes 5% to its GDP. By 2047 we want to contribute 10% to India's GDP."
IT and industries minister D Sridhar Babu said GSEC India demonstrates the power of public-private partnerships in building a secure digital infrastructure and will serve as a catalyst for innovation in areas critical to India's vision of becoming a global tech leader.

Following a multibillion-dollar investment, Meta now holds a 49% stake in Scale AI, though it has no voting rights. As part of the deal, Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang and a few team members will join Meta. Earlier this year, Meta also attempted to acquire Safe Superintelligence , reportedly valued at $32 billion during an April funding round. Daniel Gross, the CEO of Safe Superintelligence, and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman will now contribute to Meta's AI projects under Wang. Gross and Friedman also run a venture capital firm, NFDG, in which Meta is expected to acquire a stake as well. Recently, at the 'Uncapped' podcast, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that Meta had tried to poach OpenAI staff by offering signing bonuses up to $100 million, with even higher annual compensation packages. 'I've heard that Meta thinks of us as their biggest competitor. Their current AI efforts have not worked as well as they have hoped, and I respect being aggressive and continuing to try new things,' Altman said on the podcast. Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao has emphasised the critical need for advanced planning to efficiently meet the future requirements for basic amenities for citizens, given the exponential growth of Hyderabad and its surrounding areas. The Chief Secretary further explained that these reviews of local bodies are being undertaken as per the instructions of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. Accompanied by MAUD (Municipal Administration and Urban Development) officials and the Rangareddy District Collector, the Chief Secretary visited Shamshabad Municipality and conducted a review meeting. During the session, the Chief Secretary ascertained information regarding the Municipal Corporation's jurisdiction and population. Furthermore, he reviewed the services being extended by the Municipal Council to its citizens, including water supply, street lighting, drainage networks, and Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). The Chief Secretary stressed the importance of effective property tax collection to finance various activities undertaken by the Urban Local Body (ULB). Following the review meeting, the Chief Secretary visited the Eco Park developed by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) across approximately 85 acres at Kothwalguda, at a cost of Rs 75 crore. He inspected various components of the park, such as boardwalks, the bird aviary, the arrival plaza, and other landscaped facilities. This park is slated to be opened to the public within two months by the Chief Minister, once the finishing works of the arrival plaza are complete. The Chief Secretary also visited the Budvel layout, currently under development by HMDA. Net direct tax collection contracts by 1.4% in first quarter of FY26
NEW DELHI: Net direct tax collection in the first quarter (till 19 June 2025) of FY26 has contracted by 1.39% compared to the corresponding period last year. Even the gross tax collections during the period showed a moderate growth. The provisional figures released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) show that gross direct tax collections in the first quarter stand at Rs 5.45 lakh crore, a 4.86% growth from Rs 5.2 lakh crore in FY 2024-25 (as on June 19, 2024). Refunds have surged by 58.04%, amounting to Rs 86,385.31 crore during the period, significantly higher than Rs 54,660.79 crore in the previous fiscal year's comparable period.
