What is the US Open playoff format and how is it used to decide the winner? all you need to know

Time of India5 days ago

The US Open has witnessed 33 playoffs in 124 versions of the national championship, but none in the last decade and a half. It was almost 17 years ago, in 2008, that golf fans saw the famous Monday playoff between Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate. That playoff was not decided even after the 18-hole playoff. It was in the year 2018 when the
U.S. Golf Association
revamped its playoff format for the U.S. Open. However, the format remains untested.
U.S. Open playoff format
The U.S. Open playoff format is a two-hole aggregate playoff. It means that the players tied after 72 holes will play two holes, and the player with the best score thereafter will be declared the winner. In the two-hole aggregate playoff, they will play the short par-4 17th and par-4 18th holes, and the low score for the two holes will take home the victory.

However, if Holes No. 17 and 18 are played and golfers remain tied, then the players will then resume in a sudden-death format. They would begin at the 15th hole, then 16, 17, and 18, respectively. This will continue until a winner is ultimately determined.
When did the last US Open playoff at Oakmont take place?
According to Golf Week, the last time the US Open playoff at Oakmont took place was in 1994, when Ernie Els required one to win his first of two U.S. Opens. Jack Nicklaus also secured the U.S. Open in a playoff in 1962. Tommy Armour did the same in 1927. 2025 marks the 10th U.S. Open at Oakmont. It is the most at any course.

This is what has appeared to happen between former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll and retired legendary safety Earl Thomas. Once one of the most trusted coach-player pairings in the NFL, they led Seattle Seahawks' defense through arguably its best seasons. But now, Pete Carroll has said something that surprised many fans. While he still cares for Earl Thomas, the feeling may not be the same from the other side. The reason behind this change is both personal and painful. Pete Carroll says he still loves Earl Thomas but feels the bond is broken In a recent interview shared in June 2025, former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, 72, spoke about his relationship with Earl Thomas, 35. Pete Carroll said, 'I still love Earl. He doesn't love me.' This simple but emotional quote quickly made headlines. Earl Thomas played for the Seahawks from 2010 till 2018. Part of the renowned "Legion of Boom" defense, he helped the team win Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014. However, things ended on a rough note. During a game in 2018, Earl Thomas broke his leg and, while being carted off the field, was seen giving the middle finger toward the Seattle Seahawks' sideline—something many believe was directed at Pete Carroll. Stars invest $2.2M in Bourque and Lundkvist extensions, leave veteran Benn's status in limbo

Mavrik Bourque proved he's ready for more ice time with the Dallas Stars , and now he has one more year to show his vision and hockey IQ. With Bourque's extension, the Stars have secured another young talent, Nils Lundkvist , to a one-year contract extension Friday. At 23, forward Mavrik Bourque signed a one-year deal worth $950,000. In his rookie season, he posted 11 goals and 14 assists (25 points) over 73 games, marking career highs across the board. General manager Jim Nill praised his vision and hockey IQ, calling him 'a dynamic and highly skilled player' whose playmaking elevates the team. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How Much Money Should You Have Before Hiring a Financial Advisor? In 2023-24, he led the AHL with 77 points in 71 games, earning league MVP honors. The Stars also retained defenseman Nils Lundkvist on a one-year deal worth $1.25 million. Live Events At 24, Lundkvist recorded five assists and a +4 rating in 39 games last season. Nill highlighted his puck-moving ability and hockey sense, noting they enhance both offense and defense. Since joining Dallas via trade from the New York Rangers in 2022, he has totaled 44 points in 183 NHL games. These short-term deals follow the Stars' signing of Matt Duchene to a four-year extension and a trade sending Mason Marchment to Seattle. These moves left Dallas with under $500,000 in cap space before Friday's signings. After adding Bourque and Lundkvist, the team retains about $2.76 million in cap space with 18 players under contract for next season. Analysts see these one-year deals as low-risk, high-reward. Dallas hopes Bourque continues his upward trajectory and that Lundkvist builds on his steady development. The Stars began their off-season on Thursday by signing Matt Duchene to a four-year contract with an average annual value of $4.5 million. After Friday's announcement, Captain Jamie Benn is the most notable unrestricted free agent for the Stars, alongside Evgenii Dadonov, Mikael Granlund, Colin Blackwell, Cody Ceci, and Brendan Smith, all of whom are set to enter the open market. It will be interesting to see if the Stars are going to re-sign Benn.
