Hot water bottle trick can help you sleep at night during heatwave

Daily Recorda day ago

UK households are being urged to fill up a hot water bottle to beat the heat.
As temperatures soared near 30 degrees yesterday, many Brits are struggling with keeping themselves cool as the country is hit by a heatwave. While fans and drinking lots of water are recommended, UK households are also being urged to fill up a hot water bottle at night in order to get a better night's Met Office.
The highest temperature in Scotland was recorded in Drumnadrochit yesterday, with mercury reaching a whopping 28.9 degrees. This was closely followed by a recorded high of 28.7 degrees in Aberdeenshire, 28.4 degrees in Edinburgh and 27.3 degrees in Glasgow.

While today may not be as sunny, according to the fan, temperatures are still set to hit as high as 26 degrees in Aviemore and Aberlour. While many of us look forward to the warm weather, it can also leave many of us struggling to sleep at night.

For those who have been stuck tossing and turning at night, or waking up feeling sweaty, there is an easy way to keep yourself cool at night that doesn't involve plugging in a freezer. As daft as it may sound, all you need is a hot water bottle.
While many of us associate a hot water bottle with keeping us warm during the cold weather, experts have shared that it can also be a life saver during a heatwave, reports the Express. Instead of filling the bottle up with warm water, Brits should instead be reaching for the cold tap.
In order to get a good night's sleep, all you need to do is fill your hot water bottle with ice cold water and place it under your bed just before you go to sleep.
This will help cool down your sheets and pillows. From there you can also choose to hold the bottle while you sleep.
However, it should be cautioned that Brits should wrap the bottle in either a cover or tea towel if they choose to hold it at night, in order to stop the ice from making direct contact with your skin.

For those who want maximum coolness, you can fill the bottle up with cold water and then put it in the hot water bottle to make it even colder.
If you choose this method you do need to be careful, as if it is left in the freezer for too long the cold can damage the rubber. This could then mean the bottle bursts next time hot water is put inside.

Therefore, it is recommended that you should only fill the bottle half way if it is going into the freezer. Alternatively, you can choose to have one bottle to keep you cool and buy another one for regular hot water use.
Heat-Treats says: "It's simple; just fill your bottle with iced water, ice cubes or crushed ice. The bottle acts in the same way in reverse; instead of releasing warm heat it emits refreshing cold.

"Contrary to hot water which will gradually cool down, the icy water will eventually warm up until it reaches room temperature.
"Some people suggest that you can fill your bottle with cold water and then place it in the freezer to chill further, although it shouldn't be left for more than 20 minutes otherwise the rubber can become compromised and may rupture. The best plan is to have different bottles for heat filling and cold filling."
They added: "You can also use your cold hot water bottle for cooling down your sheets or pillow before you go to bed.
"If your bottle doesn't have a cover, wrap it in a tea towel or pillowcase to prevent overexposure to the cold next to your skin."

Highs of 28C with ‘fresher' and ‘breezy' conditions forecast on Sunday

Highs of 28C with 'fresher' and 'breezy' conditions are forecast in the UK on Sunday after the country reached its hottest day of the year so far, the Met Office has said. On Saturday, a provisional high of 33.2C was recorded by the weather service in Charlwood, Surrey, making it the warmest day so far of 2025. The cooler temperatures come after thunderstorms swept across parts of the country overnight, including north England and south-east Scotland, where some areas saw up to 25mm of rain in one hour, according to the forecaster. Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland saw 31.1mm of rainfall overnight and was among the locations that saw the wettest weather. Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said of Sunday's forecast: 'We could get 27, 28 in the South East. 'Obviously, yesterday we got 33.2C so it's not as warm as yesterday, but (temperatures) still well above where they should be in the South East. 'Elsewhere, there's a fresher feel, quite breezy as well so most places, high teens, low 20s for temperatures, and it stays quite showery tonight, even the South East could get a few showers coming in from the west so a mixture really of clear spells and showers tonight. 'It could turn a bit chilly in Scotland, down to three or four degrees in some rural spots, but for most places, temperatures, certainly towns and cities, generally holding up in double figures, but a fresher feel compared to what we've had recent nights.' On Monday, the South East will see the most sunshine and highs of up to 25C, Mr Petagna said. For the other regions, temperatures will be around the high teens and low 20s which is 'near-average' for the time of year, he added. Into next week, conditions look 'changeable' with 'most areas' seeing rain at points, the forecaster said. 'It does become very warm again in the South East around the middle of the week, so we could see high 20s again around Tuesday, Wednesday in the South East, but at the same time as that heat builds again briefly in the south and South East, we could see further thundery downpours for a time as well.'
