2 dead after plane crash near Vermilion Airport: RCMP
Federal investigators have been sent to Vermilion, Alta., after two people died Saturday in a plane crash near the local airport.
The plane crashed about 1.2 kilometres short of the airport runway, just north of the town, killing the pilot and sole passenger, RCMP said.
The pilot was a 46-year-old woman from Slave Lake, Alta. The passenger was a 76-year-old man from Mannville, Alta., police said.
"Shock is going throughout the community," Shawn Jacula, a Vermilion resident and aviator, told CBC News.
"It's something that is just unimaginable heartbreak for two families, two individuals who unfortunately lost their lives today, and it's difficult for everyone involved."
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) sent two investigators to Vermilion, which is roughly 175 kilometres east of Edmonton. The investigators will gather information and assess how the crash happened, according to a news release the agency issued Saturday.
The TSB, an independent federal agency, examines air, marine, pipeline and rail transportation incidents to improve safety. Its investigations do not assign fault, nor determine liability.
The crash occurred the same day Vermilion Airport was scheduled to hold an event for Alberta Air Tours, which visits rural communities to promote aviation.
Alberta Air Tours had postponed the event until Sunday, the organization said on Facebook, due to poor weather. It then cancelled the event altogether out of respect after the crash.

Man arrested, charged with first degree murder in east end stabbing
A 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged with first degree murder in a fatal stabbing in Toronto's east end that happened last week, police say. Niagara Regional Police located Anthony Steven Oliveira in the area of Falls Avenue and Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls on Sunday, Toronto police said in a news release on Sunday. Pournasir-Roudbane was sitting down when attacked and was stabbed several times, police said. Pournasir-Roudbane, who lived in the area, was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead. He is the city's 16th homicide victim of the year. Following the stabbing, police said a male suspect was seen running from the area wearing dark clothing. According to Durham Regional Police, the suspect was also wanted in connection with an assault that happened earlier this month in Oshawa.

Tree falls on Groton woman during hike in New Hampshire
A Massachusetts woman was hurt on Sunday when a dead tree fell on her while she was hiking in New Hampshire. It happened around 11:30 a.m. while the Groton woman was about half a mile from the Attitash Trail head in Bartlett, which is in the White Mountain region of New Hampshire. New Hampshire Fish and Game officers and an ambulance from Bartlett reached the woman within an hour. The woman was taken to an area hospital for evaluation. Fish and Game did not release any additional details on the woman's condition. New Hampshire ATV crash In a separate incident over the weekend, New Hampshire Fish and Game also responded to Dixville in the northern tip of New Hampshire for an ATV crash. A 63-year-old man from North Hampton, New Hampshire was with a group when his ATV drove over loose gravel. The man was not able to navigate the turn, and crashed into a large rock. New Hampshire Fish and Game New Hampshire Fish and Game said it appears inexperience and unreasonable speed were factors into the crash. "Conservation Officers would like to use this incident to remind OHRV operators to always operate in a reasonable and prudent manner for existing trail conditions and with regard for actual and potential hazards. In all cases speed shall be controlled so that the operator will be able to avoid colliding with any person, vehicle, or object," Fish and Game said in a statement.

Man jailed after trying to walk off with Colorado 8-year-old: 'May I borrow your child?'
A 34-year-old man was arrested Saturday after approaching a woman in a Littleton grocery store and attempting to kidnap her 8-year-old granddaughter. The grandmother was shopping in the produce section of the Safeway at 5025 South Kipling Parkway when the stranger walked up to she and her daughter, according to a press release from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. The man allegedly placed his hands on the girl's shoulders and said something to the effect of, "May I borrow your child?" to the grandmother. He then began to walk the girl out of the store. The grandmother yelled at the man, according to JCSO's recounting. The girl broke away from the man and ran back to her grandmother. Bradley Mikel Wilson, 34, after his arrest of kidnapping charges Saturday in Jefferson County. Jefferson County Sheriff's Office The man left the store but quickly re-entered and tried to take the girl again, per investigators. But store personnel intervened at this point and yelled at the man. He then left the store and drove away. JeffCo deputies caught up with Bradley Mikel Wilson about four miles away near the intersection of U.S. 285 and Willow Springs Road. Wilson was taken into custody and jailed on a charge of 2nd Degree Kidnapping. Neither the girl or grandmother were injured. Wilson is scheduled to appear in a Jefferson County courtroom Monday.
