Thief who swallowed $770K worth of Tiffany earrings 'expelled' them over 12 days later, Florida police say
Investigators recovered $770,000 worth of stolen Tiffany & Co. earrings last week after the alleged thief who swallowed the jewelry "expelled" them from his system, Florida police said.
The Orlando Police Department announced the recovery of the stolen jewelry from suspect Jaythan Gilder in a Facebook post on Friday.
'Detectives monitored Jaythan Gilder for more than a dozen days at the hospital before they were able to match the serial numbers on the jewelry with the items that were stolen from Tiffany & Co.,' the caption read.
In a video accompanying the post, Detectives Aaron Goss and Tiffany Perez shared details from the investigation.
'Later, after the diamonds were expelled from his system, we were able to bring them to Tiffany's, where they were cleaned, and their master jeweler confirmed the inscription and serial numbers matched the stolen pieces,' Goss explained.
'I'm very proud of our team for all of our work. We acted quickly and diligently, working together tirelessly for days on end,' Perez added.
Gilder's alleged heist unfolded on Feb. 26 at Tiffany & Co. in the Mall at Millenia, where he allegedly posed as a representative for an Orlando Magic basketball player.
He was escorted to a VIP room and presented with several luxury jewelry items, including a pair of 4.86-carat diamond earrings worth $160,000, a pair of 8.19-carat diamond earrings worth $609,000 and a 5.61-carat diamond ring worth $587,000, the court document said.
Gilder allegedly attempted to grab the jewelry, during which he struggled with employees, ultimately dropping the ring. However, authorities say he managed to swallow the diamonds before being taken into custody.
A scan at the Washington County Jail later revealed 'foreign objects in his stomach,' according to the affidavit.
Police also noted that Gilder has a history of jewelry heists, having pulled off 'a similar robbery' at a Tiffany & Co. in The Woodlands, Texas, in 2022. Additionally, he has 48 outstanding warrants in Colorado.
Gilder is facing charges of grand theft and robbery with a mask.
As of Tuesday, he remains in custody in Orange County. It was not immediately clear whether he had legal representation.

Court documents show Ashley had obtained restraining orders against her mother and sister prior to the deadly incident, CBS 58 out of Milwaukee reported. In a 2023 petition, Ashley said she was "not safe" and "fearing for my life." "This is what she'd been saying for the longest, basically, in ways. But we never knew that they would do this to her. Like this," Shamira McGhee, another sister of Ashley, told the outlet. Ashley's mother had also filed restraining orders against her daughter, alleging in a 2019 petition Ashley "pulled a knife from my kitchen on me" and "threw a brick and it hit me in my left side." Ashley's mother, Tara Hudson, has denied any involvement in comments to CBS 58. She confirmed that a dispute broke out between her children prior to the shooting. "I was begging them to leave. Leave her alone, let her go. And my kids just refused to," Tara said. What To Know Analyssa Thompson, a friend of Ashley, told WTMJ-TV out of Milwaukee that a gunman shot Ashley, then fled the scene. "He put it up to her, and she said, 'Don't shoot me' and he shot her." Thompson said. Shedeur Sanders cited for speeding twice in June amid Browns QB battle
Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders was cited by police on Tuesday morning for driving 101 mph, 40 mph over the speed limit. It turns out that Tuesday's infraction was not his first. According to Medina, Ohio court records Sanders received another citation in June. The first came on June 5 in Brunswick, Ohio where the former Colorado star quarterback was cited for going 91 mph in a 65 mph zone. Browns officials told that Sanders' "is taking care of the tickets." Sanders is squarely in the middle of a hard fought quarterback competition. He has pefermored well during spring practices, but only being a fifth round pick makes any negative feel like it could cost him a chance at playing meaningful football. At a Thursday afternoon charity softball game, Sanders attempted to apologize for his actions admitting, "I've made some wrong choices." The half-hearted apology does not seem like a concerted effort to improve his off field actions, but in the grand scheme of "things"incidents" a speeding ticket is very low on the totem pole. Whether Sanders learns from his two speeding tickets and fully owns up to his mistakes remains to be seen, but any off-field transgression will be under the spotlight considering his name and already highly publicizied first few months in the NFL.
