Marine police detain boat, tanker lorry attempting to transfer 24,000 litres of diesel in Kuala Baram

MIRI (May 9): The marine police detained a boat and tanker lorry in the process of transferring diesel at the Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) jetty in Kuala Baram here on Monday.
Marine Police Force Region 5 Sarawak commander ACP Ab Rahman Mat Hasan said the shipmaster and lorry driver were also held during Op Taring Landai for failing to produce any documented proof of authorisation from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN).
'Further checks found that both the lorry driver and the shipmaster, both of whom are local citizens, failed to produce any documented proof of authorisation to possess or store or transport controlled goods without a permit or special approval from KPDN.
'As a result of the raid, the authorities seized one boat, one tanker lorry, and approximately 24,000 litres of diesel fuel,' he said in a statement today.
The total estimated value of the seizures was approximately RM10.252 million.
Ab Rahman said the arrests and seizures were made under the Supply Control Act 1961 and the case is being investigated by KPDN.
Additionally, he said the shipmaster also committed offences under the Sarawak Rivers Ordinance 1993 for operating without a qualified Master/KED and failure to produce a River Transport Permit during inspection, as well as offences under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1960 for operating without a boat licence and operating without a chief engine driver.
He explained that cases under the Sarawak Rivers Ordinance 1993 have been referred to SRB, while those under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1960 were referred to the Marine Department Malaysia for further action.
The police, especially Marine Police Region 5 Sarawak, welcome all forms of information and cooperation from the public, and strongly encourage tip-offs to help combat crime effectively.
Those found guilty under the Supply Control Act 1961 (Section 21): Possessing/Storing/ Transporting Controlled Goods Without Permit/Licence/special approval from KPDN may be punished with imprisonment, a fine, or both.

TAWAU: Three locals suspected of attempting to misappropriate controlled goods were arrested during Ops Tiris raids at two separate locations with total seizures valued at RM332,440. Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) Commander, DCP Datuk Victor Sanjos, said the suspects were aged between 31 and 37. He said the operation was conducted by Esscom's Security Division in strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, aimed at combating cross-border criminal activities. In the first operation, three individuals were detained along with a large quantity of diesel stored in a modified four-wheel-drive vehicle equipped with a special tank. The vehicle also carried several barrels of diesel stored around a petrol station area along Jalan Apas. 'The raiding team also seized mobile phones, receipts and two four-wheel-drive vehicles believed used in the illegal activity,' he said. Advertisement The suspects were handed over to KPDN's Enforcement Division for investigation under the Control of Supplies Act 1961. Victor said in a second operation near the Batu 3 Jetty, Jalan Apas, the enforcement team detected a suspicious boat entering Malaysian waters from the Indonesian maritime border. However, the boat's skipper and several passengers jumped into the sea and fled after realising the presence of authorities. Upon inspection, authorities found a local woman passenger along with cargo, and it was determined that the boat was used for cross-border smuggling. The woman failed to provide any Customs declaration documents for the items onboard. 'The authorities seized the boat with its outboard engine, several food items and a suspicious lorry parked near the jetty,' he said. Further investigation of the woman is being carried out by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department under the Customs Act 1967. Victor said the aim of the operation was to curb the smuggling of controlled, subsidised, and untaxed goods, as well as to prevent the entry of illegal immigrants. He affirmed Esscom's commitment to fighting cross-border crime, especially in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone), in support of national development initiatives and the strengthening of the community's socio-economic wellbeing, grounded in compassion, security, confidence, and sustainability in line with the aspirations of the Malaysia Madani agenda. Johor KPDN busts LPG misappropriation syndicate, seizes goods worth RM200,000

KLUANG: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) in Johor has crippled a syndicate misappropriating subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) operating under the guise of a palm oil weighing centre in Machap on Wednesday. Its director, Lilis Saslinda Pornomo, said the scheme was uncovered during a joint raid with the Putrajaya branch at 8 pm, during which they discovered 1,176 gas cylinders, both empty and filled, estimated to weigh 4,000 kilogrammes (kg) and worth RM200,000. Also found at the premises was a lorry tank. 'The modus operandi of the syndicate is using an old storage facility behind the palm oil collection and weighing centre to transfer subsidised 14kg LPG into a lorry tank using a method known as decanting. 'It is believed that the misappropriated gas was intended for industrial use. Further investigation is underway to determine whether it was meant for the local market or otherwise,' she told a press conference here today. Two workers, a local and an Indonesian national, both in their 30s, were also arrested following the raid. The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.
