Johor KPDN busts LPG misappropriation syndicate, seizes goods worth RM200,000

KLUANG: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) in Johor has crippled a syndicate misappropriating subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) operating under the guise of a palm oil weighing centre in Machap on Wednesday.
Its director, Lilis Saslinda Pornomo, said the scheme was uncovered during a joint raid with the Putrajaya branch at 8 pm, during which they discovered 1,176 gas cylinders, both empty and filled, estimated to weigh 4,000 kilogrammes (kg) and worth RM200,000. Also found at the premises was a lorry tank.
'The modus operandi of the syndicate is using an old storage facility behind the palm oil collection and weighing centre to transfer subsidised 14kg LPG into a lorry tank using a method known as decanting.
'It is believed that the misappropriated gas was intended for industrial use. Further investigation is underway to determine whether it was meant for the local market or otherwise,' she told a press conference here today.
Two workers, a local and an Indonesian national, both in their 30s, were also arrested following the raid.
The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Dacia Jane Romanus had urged the court to impose the maximum sentence, saying the brutality of the case had shocked the nation. "The deceased was a young woman who left her hometown for honest work amid the pandemic, but ended up losing her life at her workplace," Dacia said. She also told the court that the maid suffered daily abuse and was denied her basic rights, including unpaid wages and the ability to return home.

Ex-Tronoh assemblyman's final appeal against his rape conviction and prison sentence to be heard on Aug 27

PUTRAJAYA — The Federal Court has fixed Aug 27 to hear former Tronoh assemblyman Paul Yong Choo Kiong's (picture) appeal against his conviction and imprisonment for allegedly raping his maid. One of his lawyers, Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, confirmed with Bernama the hearing date following a case management held today. Also representing Yong is lawyer Datuk Rajpal Singh. Yong is appealing against the Court of Appeal's decision in upholding the decision of the High Court which convicted him for raping his 23-year-old Indonesian maid. The High Court, in July 2022, sentenced Yong to 13 years imprisonment, but the Court of Appeal in March, last year, reduced the sentence to eight years. He was alleged to have commited the offence in a room at his house in Ipoh, between 8.15pm and 9.15pm on July 7, 2019. The Court of Appeal, in a 2-1 majority decision, dismissed Yong's appeal against his conviction but reduced his prison sentence to eight years, along with two strokes of the cane. The appellate court, however, granted a stay of execution, pending disposal of the appeal at the Federal Court and Yong was released on RM30,000 bail with one surety and ordered to surrender his passport to the court. In March this year, the High Court in Ipoh, Perak dismissed Yong's application to submit additional evidence in his appeal.
