'Uber has innovated so hard… they invented a bus'

Metro17-05-2025

Uber is launching a new service in the US called Route Share and the internet isn't impressed.
Several social media posters have mocked the offering, saying the company have basically 'invented the bus'.
Unveiling Route Share in a blog post, Uber said the service would allow riders to share a car over a predetermined route with with designated pickup points.
Speaking at a conference, Uber's head of product Sachin Kansal: 'We ask the riders to walk a few blocks to a predetermined point at a predetermined time to participate in a predetermined route which they will share with a couple of other riders. We call that Route Share.'
It will cost up to 50% less than UberX the firm said on its blog, with savings made if you buy subscriptions or prepaid passes.
The user goes into their Uber app and puts in where they will be going from and their desired destination and the app will show you nearby routes with pickups available every 20 minutes.
The driver will then wait for up to two minutes before the cost rises. Similar to UberX Share, you could be riding with up to two others.
One TikTok user, 'Sharkveyno', shared a video of Kansal explaining the concept, before telling viewers: 'Uber made buses. Our brightest, most innovative minds have recreated buses.
'They'll really do anything than have affordable transportation in the United States.'
Uber aren't actually the first to test this type of idea. In 2017 Lyft, another US ride hailing service, piloted Shuttle, which worked in a similar fashion. It was never rolled out fully, however.
There was also Ford's Chariot, which ran in nine US cities as well as London and offered commuter shuttle services. After launching in 2014, it shut five years later in 2019.
Citymapper's Smartbus, which was later known as SmartRide, then simply Ride, didn't fare much better.
It launched in 2018 with a fleet of eight-seater buses that picked up and dropped off passengers at fixed points in central London and took specific predetermined routes.
It lasted little more than a year. More Trending
Uber do actually run a more regular type of bus service in the US and India, which is called Uber Shuttle.
It uses normal size buses, which take a predetermined route at set times and users book their seat through the app.
Route Share will be available in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Boston, and Baltimore, with more cities to come, according to Uber.
It's not clear if the firm plans to bring the service to the UK.

Influencer refuses to pay for lash appointment - then staff make wild discovery

A beautician who runs a small business from her home was left stunned after a client refused to pay after claiming to be an "influencer" who could promote her work online - then she made a shock discovery A beautician was left baffled after a client refused to pay for her £50 lash and brow appointment - claiming she thought the treatment would be free because she planned to post it on Instagram. The small business owner, who runs a beauty studio from her home, says she had spent over an hour carefully tinting and styling the woman's brows and applying a fresh set of classic eyelash extensions. ‌ The client, described as "an absolutely lovely girl," had spent the entire session discussing her upcoming holiday, explaining she was getting the appointment ahead of going away. But when Lauren O'Connor politely asked whether she'd prefer to pay by card or cash at the end of the appointment, the unnamed woman's mood shifted. ‌ "She pulled out a selfie light and started taking pictures of her lashes," the beautician said in a TikTok video. When asked for payment, the woman then allegedly said: "Why would I need to pay? I've just took my pictures." The client then is said to have informed the stunned beautician that she didn't think she'd need to pay at all - because she was planning to post the results on social media and tag the business. Despite having fewer than 1,000 followers, she seemed to think her post would offer great exposure for the small business, according to Lauren. "I said, 'right well, well negotiate, how many followers do you have?'" That's when the 'micro-influencer' revealed she had less than 1,000 across Instagram and TikTok. At no point before or during the booking had the client mentioned being an influencer, the beautician claims. ‌ "You're going on to me as if you're Molly Mae," Lauren raged in the video. "I'm not being rude, but from our DMs when you booked in, I sent the total, I sent the confirmation, you didn't once tell me your intention was to not pay me." When it became clear the client was unwilling to pay, the beautician stood firm and reiterated her prices. The woman, who "seemed shocked", eventually paid - but later allegedly blocked the beautician on all social media platforms. "Why would I let you have a free set of brows and lashes?," Lauren adds. "She didn't even post beauty content, it was her going to the gym. What is that going to do for me? ‌ "When I have done brand collaborations in the past, they've done a whole video for me, and let me post them too. This girl literally took two photos and said 'I'll post that for you'." After sharing the experience online, other beauty professionals and small business owners came forward with similar stories, revealing just how common this kind of behaviour is becoming. The beautician added that while she's open to working with content creators, it's something that needs to be discussed and agreed in advance - not sprung on her after a service has already been provided. "She eventually paid me but blocked me on everything," she claims. "She was fuming."

Aldi launch new own-brand chicken wine in a box but be quick

The new Le Petit Poulet Rosé joins the range for £12.49, and it's available in stores from June 22. Building on last year's huge sales Aldi introduced Le Petit Poulet Rosé the supermarket has a 1.5L boxed version, offering double the wine. The Le Petit Poulet Rosé Boxed Wine has a larger, picnic-perfect format - but shoppers will have to be quick, because as with all Specialbuys, once they're gone, they're gone. Last summer, the 'chicken wine' was popular on TikTok and Instagram. It's named after the chicken on its label. Delicately pale and bursting with citrus and red berry notes, Le Petit Poulet Rosé comes from sun-drenched vineyards of Provence at a price that's 19% cheaper than market leader La Vielle Ferme. Crisp, refreshing blush is ideal for creating the perfect aperitif moment whilst soaking up the sun. Sam Caporn, Mistress of Wine, says yes, and the cardboard box shouldn't put drinkers off: 'Historically, lower quality wines were packaged in boxed format, with the perception being that customers wanted higher volume at a low price - but that's no longer the case. 'Boxed wines have many advantages. For example, boxed wine can stay fresh for considerably longer than bottled. 'There is usually a price advantage too, as you're not paying for heavy or expensive glass. And lastly, boxed wine tastes no different to bottled.' Recommended reading: The new Le Petit Poulet Rosé boxed wine joins Aldi's boxed wine line-up, including red, white and rosé: Aldi's Le Petit Poulet Rosé boxed wine (£12.49, 1.5L) is available in stores nationwide from June 22, while stocks last.
