The smallest Lexus ever made is loaded with luxury but doesn't cost a lot

The Irish Sun01-05-2025

LEXUS used to make large luxury saloons with big, silky-smooth V8s.
But customers don't want cars anymore — they want SUVs and Lexus has ditched all but one of its saloon car range, now only selling the ES model.

It has invested heavily in SUVs and Lexus now has a comprehensive line-up available, starting with the baby of the bunch and this week's test drive, the LBX.
Then the rest of the Lexus SUV range consists of the UX and UX Electric, the NX, RZ and range-topping RX that are all hybrids.

But in keeping with Japanese quirkiness it also produces the LM people carrier, which comes in a seven-seater or a super luxurious four-seater version that brings a whole new meaning to comfort and travelling in style.
But back to the LBX, the smallest Lexus ever.

It's based on the Toyota Yaris Cross, so they share the same chassis, engine and hybrid system.
The LBX compact SUV may be small in dimensions but it's not lacking in luxury — it's as plush and as well-built as you'd expect a Lexus to be.

The seats are super-sumptuous, but quite figure-hugging, heated of course and there's loads of soft leather trim throughout the cabin.
It's quite compact in the back, and although some bigger Lexus models are like a limo for rear-seat passengers, there's not many creature comforts back there in this one bar a USB-C charging port and electric rear windows.

The 9.8-inch central screen is a decent size but the infotainment could use more functionality as there are limited settings compared to some brands like BMW, who have too many apps.
There are plenty of physical buttons and even though the heated seats are operated via the display, if you use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto there's a permanent menu bar at the bottom of the screen so you can always adjust the important functions, even when your phone is connected.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine, so no turbo, and along with the hybrid system the combined output is only 136bhp.
But it makes up for it with torque as the engine produces 129Nm and the electric motor adds a further 185Nm — so its good for a 9.2-second sprint to 100kph and a top speed of 170kph.

HYBRID SYSTEM: The LBX uses Lexus' famed self-charging hybrid system so you never need to plug it in
Credit: Lexus UK
The CVT gearbox can be a bit vocal under heavy acceleration, but it performs really well. Alas, there's no sport mode.

It's a self-charging hybrid so you don't need to plug it in to charge and the official combined fuel economy figure is 52.3mpg.
And I averaged 44mpg during mixed driving conditions, so that could easily be bettered on a long run.
It's a brilliant little SUV, benefitting from Lexus build quality and reliability and it starts from €39,440.

Best hybrid SUVs in Ireland: top models for low emissions and family practicality

The hybrid SUV market is booming right now and that's because they offer low running costs with practical interiors. Almost every car manufacturer has jumped onto the SUV bandwagon in recent years and the latest offerings are the best yet. A hybrid car has a petrol or diesel engine mated to an electric motor. The combustion engine provides power at higher speeds and to the battery when not in use, and then at slower speeds around town, the electric motor kicks in to enable the vehicle to coast using electricity. A plug-in hybrid car is similar to a regular hybrid with the addition of a battery pack on board which enables a range of pure electric driving over a certain distance. Hybrids are better for around-town use, while plug-in hybrids are better for company car drivers and those who cover a lot of miles. The cars on this list offer lots of practicality, and durability and would be a perfect family wagon. In this article, we've compiled a list of the best hybrid SUVs on sale in Ireland today. Kia Sportage Kia Sportage One of Ireland's best-selling car, the Kia Sportage can be equipped with an efficient hybrid powertrain. It comes with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to an electric motor that produces a total of 207bhp, while running costs should be low with Kia claiming the car can achieve up to 5.6l/100km and that CO2 emissions are just 128g/km. The Sportage looks good, is decent to drive and comes with lots of interior space, making it an ideal car for families. Plus, all new Sportages come with Kia's seven-year or 150,000km warranty as standard. Hyundai Tucson Hyundai Tucson Underneath its skin, the Hyundai Tucson is the same car as the Kia Sportage and features an efficient hybrid powertrain. Just like its Korean twin, the car is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to an electric motor that generates a total of 215bhp, can manage a claimed 5.2l/100km and pumps out 134g/km of CO2. The Tucson's exterior design features lots of curves and bold lines and there is a sporty N-Line trim level which gives you a few extra performance-oriented touches. Also, the space inside is vast with loads of rear seat space and plenty of cubby holes up front for all of your passengers' belongings. And, all new Tucsons come with Hyundai's five-year or 160,000km too. Lexus RX Lexus RX Lexus knows a thing or two when it comes to hybrid powertrains and its latest RX is one of the best on the market. To drive, it's quiet, has a premium-feeling interior and has a smooth ride – perfect for long journeys. Under the bonnet, there is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated to an electric motor that churns out 241bhp. Lexus claims that the car has a combined fuel consumption figure of up to 6.3l/100km and that it only produces 143g/km of CO2. Also, because it's a Lexus, it will come with the firm's Relax Warranty, which means that if you get your car serviced at a franchised dealer, you will get a year's warranty with the car up to 10 years or 185,000kms. Dacia Duster Dacia Duster If you're on a budget and want a hybrid SUV, then look no further than the Dacia Duster. The Duster has always carried value on its side and the latest model is by far the best iteration yet. The hybrid model features a 1.6-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor that produces 138bhp. Dacia claims that it has a combined litres per 100km figure of 4.9 and that CO2 emissions are a low 112g/km. It may be cheap, but that doesn't mean nasty, as the Duster represents excellent value for money and it feels grown-up and provides a comfortable ride. Toyota CH-R Toyota CH-R The Toyota CH-R is a good-looking and interesting alternative. With its coupe-esque styling, two-tone paintwork and flush door handles, it stands out from a rather mundane crowd. It comes with plenty of standard equipment and is decent to drive with precise handling and good body control around the corners. Powering the car, there is a choice of two powertrains. The former is a 1.8-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor that gives out 138bhp, while the latter is a punchier 2.0-litre unit with an electric motor that boosts power up to 194bhp. Plus, both models produce the same 111g/km of CO2 and Toyota claims that the CH-R in hybrid guise can manage between 4.9 and 4.8l/100kkm on the combined cycle. All Toyotas come with the firm's Relax Scheme warranty too, allowing for up to 10 years or 185,000kms of cover if you get the car serviced at a franchised dealer. Lexus LBX Lexus LBX If you want something a little bit smaller but still carry a premium badge, then the Lexus LBX could be the answer. It comes with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine mated to an electric motor that develops 134bhp. What's more, running costs should be very low as Lexus claims the LBX can manage 4.5l/100km and produces just 102g/km of CO2. To drive, it handles well and there is little body roll around the corners which makes the car one of the best-in-class for driving dynamics. Skoda Kodiaq Skoda Kodiaq PHEV If you're thinking of another alternative, then how about a plug-in hybrid? PHEVs are an even closer stepping stone to EV ownership as they can run up to a certain distance on pure electric power. One of the best on the market is the Skoda Kodiaq. It comes equipped with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to an electric motor and a 25.7kWh battery pack that the manufacturer claims can take the car up to 120km on electric power. The Kodiaq is very practical with lots of interior space and has handy little cubby holes throughout the cabin. It's also good to drive and very refined, while the quality of the materials used throughout is one of the best-in-class.

Toyota & Lexus new cars for 2025 revealed including rugged RAV4 update, hybrid Aygo and sharp-looking ES saloon

'IF you want to catch a lot of fish, set out many fishing rods,' a wise man in the motor industry once said. Toyota is definitely following that advice. 5 Toyota will relaunch its baby Aygo X as a hybrid instead of pure-petrol at the end of the year Credit: Supplied 5 The C-HR+, looks, and is, different from the C-HR hybrid Credit: Toyota 5 The small pure battery Urban Cruiser, on sale shortly Credit: Supplied So any potential customer swimming into a Toyota dealership will find a huge range of cars ready to hook them. It's working. Sales of Toyota and its posher Lexus arm keep growing. A cascade of new cars and updates will likely keep the momentum going into next year. READ MORE IN MOTORS The RAV4 family SUV is a massive seller and returns next year as a plug-in hybrid only. It should be economical when running on petrol alone. But if you can find somewhere to plug in, the electric range is now a very handy 62 milles. The angular new body has a proper rugged look to it, standing out from the crop of softy crossovers it competes against. Toyota keeps driving down the cost of hybrids. Most read in Motors At the end of the year it will relaunch its baby That will have the lowest consumption and CO2 rating of any car without a plug. Toyota offers $25k discount off brand new model until June 2 – but the rebate depends on where shoppers live So the hybrid system is still a massive part of Toyota's success. When hybrid arrived here in the Prius at the turn of the millennium, it was a minority sport. Gradually it went mainstream, spreading across nearly all Toyota and Lexus models. So much so that the company took flak for not jumping from there on to the full-electric car bandwagon. Now that caution looks wise. The speed of changeover to EVs is softening, and the legal push to ban hybrids is paused five years to 2035. Shifting predictions for EVs are affecting Toyota-Lexus too. 5 For families wanting more space as well as battery power, Toyota will add a Touring estate version to the bZ4X electric crossover Credit: Supplied For some years, the plan was to build standalone electric cars, wholly different from the hybrids. But that's going to change. Andrea Carlucci, European marketing boss, told me the plan now is to build cars that you can buy as either full-electric or hybrid. Selling completely separate hybrid and EV models, he says, 'causes a complexity challenge', confusing buyers and choking dealerships. 'We should simplify the number of silhouettes.' So Lexus is launching its sharp-looking new luxury saloon, the ES, in both a hybrid and a 330-mile electric. In the UK the plan is we'll get the electric only, but no doubt that could alter if the politics of EVs change again. For families wanting more space as well as battery power, Toyota will add a Touring estate version to the bZ4X electric crossover Inside, it's luxurious but with a clean Japanese-garden feel. The door trim looks like back-illuminated bamboo. But despite the new plan for dual-powertrain cars, there are still a bunch of pure battery cars in the launch phase. The small one is the Urban Cruiser, on sale shortly. It'll be followed by the C-HR+, which looks, and is, different from the C-HR hybrid. All those two share is a general theme: both are compact coupe-crossovers. For families wanting more space as well as battery power, Toyota will add a Touring estate version to the bZ4X electric crossover. That's spring next year. The all-electric Lexus RZ gets an update next year, including steer-by-wire using an aircraft-style yoke instead of a steering wheel, plus fake 'gearbox' effects to make driving a single-speed EV feel more interesting. More like a petrol car, in other words. 5 The RAV4 family SUV is a massive seller and returns next year as a plug-in hybrid only Credit: Supplied Ten things YOU should know as a car owner To help you feel more confident as a car owner, here are ten things you should be familiar with about your vehicle: When is your MOT due?
