This Father's Day, the LEGO Group is inspiring families across the UAE to rethink gifting traditions with its regionally tailored 'Build It With Him' campaign – a creative call to action that invites parents and children to connect through the joy of LEGO® play.
Ula Bieganska, Head of Marketing, LEGO Group MEA says, 'The creative vision was inspired by the idea that Father's Day isn't really about celebration it's about connection. Our campaign for the LEGO Group set out to reframe the occasion not as a moment for grand gestures, but as a chance to be present and playful.
The campaign was a collaboration between Publicis Middle East and MSL Middle East, with MSL handling the strategy and insights and earned amplification and PME leading on creative.
Insight-led storytelling
To shape the campaign, the team conducted extensive local research to better understand Father's Day in the UAE
The strategy was rooted in a deep understanding of Father's Day in the UAE, an occasion that is officially acknowledged but often culturally overlooked.
Bieganska says, 'We carried out primary research to understand mindsets and habits around Father's Day, among the country's diverse expat population, alongside the influence of Khaleeji family dynamics, and the last-minute nature of gifting behaviour in this market. Rather than importing a global idea, we built a regional-first narrative that played into human truths, social behaviours, and localised gifting patterns.'
She adds, 'A combination of local research and cultural insight revealed a disconnect between how Father's Day is recognised and how it is actually experienced in the UAE. A YouGov study showed that 75 per cent of UAE dads had received the same gift more than once, with cliché and predictable gifts like mugs, wallets and shirts topping the list,'
'Yet, when asked about their most meaningful gifts, a quarter of dads said it was something handmade by their child. Our focus groups echoed this sentiment, as dads spoke not about being celebrated, but about wanting to spend more time with their kids. This emotional truth became the anchor for the campaign,' reveals Bieganska.
Transforming tradition through play
The campaign's primary goal was to build brand affinity by positioning LEGO bricks as a meaningful Father's Day gifting solution. Rather than focusing on conversion, it was designed to resonate emotionally with families and boost top-of-mind awareness during a typically under-leveraged seasonal moment in the region.
'While this wasn't a conversion-led campaign, it was designed to drive customer loyalty through emotional resonance and cultural relevance,' says Bieganska.
'Build It With Him'
The campaign ran across owned the LEGO Group social channels, earned media, and in-store with an activation at the LEGO Store at Mall of The Emirates. Creative assets included static visuals, with playful LEGO brick-built reinterpretations of traditional Father's Day gifts, all created for digital-first consumption. Aside from this, influencer marketing also took place.
Influencers known for parenting and lifestyle content were chosen for their alignment with LEGO's values of imagination and quality. Their content focused on sharing the experience of building LEGO gifts with their children and reflecting on Father's Day meaningfully, enhancing engagement and authenticity.
The 'Build It With Him' campaign specifically spoke to two core audience segments in the UAE.
Expat mums (aged 28–45) – the key gift buyers in the household, often time-poor but looking for thoughtful and meaningful gifting options that reflect shared family values. Older expat kids (aged 16–25) – trend-aware gift-givers who want to move beyond the generic and find gifts that feel personal, creative and social-media-worthy.
A celebration of connection beyond the occasion
More than a seasonal campaign, 'Build It With Him' champions the enduring value of creativity and cross-generational bonding – turning a traditionally quiet holiday into a playful opportunity for family connection.
'The key brand message is simple but powerful: the best gifts aren't bought, they're built. Through this lens, LEGO bricks becomes more than a product, it becomes a tool for cross-generational connection and shared memory-making,' Bieganska concludes.
By tapping into regional behaviours and emotional truths, the LEGO Group campaign transforms a token holiday into a creative opportunity for connection. Ahead of Father's Day on June 21, MENA-based gifting marketplace Flowwow and Admitad, affiliate marketing platform, have released insights into shifting gifting habits in the MENA region, based on over 55,000 online purchases. Admitad analysts studied the behaviour of online shoppers in MENA countries (with the UAE and KSA analysed separately) during the 'calm period' of June 20–22, 2023 and May 20–22, 2024 and 'the peak period' June 20–22, 2024. In Saudi Arabia, 25 per cent more gifts for men on Father's Day were purchased online, choosing thoughtful and family-oriented options, the study reveals. Online orders during the 2024 Father's Day period across MENA rose 16 per cent year-over-year, with Saudi Arabia leading at a 30 per cent rise. According to Flowwow's market study, Father's Day 2024 saw a 129 per cent increase in gift orders year-over-year, with gross merchandise value (GMV) up 121 per cent. The overall trend of gifting to men continues to grow, showing a more than 20 per cent year-over-year increase, the study reveals. Looking ahead to 2025, Flowwow forecasts a 30 per cent increase in Father's Day sales in Saudi Arabia, with strong demand for gift sets including hamper boxes and gourmet sets, as well as themed Father's Day cakes and premium chocolates. From material to meaningful Customers in Kuwait and UAE spent the most on gifts for dads, with the highest average order values (AOV) at $114 and $57.2 respectively. They were followed by Jordan ($38.6), Egypt ($31.6), and Saudi Arabia ($29.1), where spending was more modest. The average order value for gifts dropped by 3.4 per cent to $73.75, approximately 12 per cent lower than other major holidays like Mother's Day or International Women's Day, which the report suggests is due to a preference for personal and meaningful options over costly gifting in MENA. 'Father's Day is becoming more meaningful in the MENA region, especially in Saudi Arabia, where gifting for men is growing alongside a strong cultural appreciation for fatherhood. It's not just about fathers any more, people are celebrating all the important male figures in their lives, including stepdads, and grandfathers, showing that their presence truly matters to families across the GCC,' said Slava Bogdan, CEO at Flowwow. New e-commerce trends on Father's Day According to research by Flowwow and Admitad, Google Trends confirms the rising relevance of Father's Day in Saudi Arabia and the broader Middle East. The search volume for Father's Day-related content – such as quotes, greetings, cards, and gift ideas – surged more than 30 times this week from June 15. Google Shopping data also shows a peak in gift-related searches ahead of the celebration, indicating that more people are preparing for the holiday with purposeful intention. 'Father's Day is quickly becoming one of the key drivers of e-commerce growth in Saudi Arabia and in the MENA region. Between June 20 and 22, we saw a 16 per cent year-over-year increase in orders across the region, with Saudi Arabia as a digitally advanced country showing the strongest growth – a 30 per cent surge in order volume during the holiday period,' said Anna Gidirim, CEO of Admitad. According to data from Admitad, the best-selling gift categories for men in MENA include home and tools (30 per cent), electronics (22 per cent), and automotive accessories (9 per cent). In Saudi Arabia, customers favoured electronics and gadgets even more, accounting for 28 per cent of all sales. Overall, family-oriented holidays like Father's Day are becoming more significant in the GCC gifting market. Flowwow claims. New research shows women in the Middle East are helping drive a global rise in women's spending power, yet many still feel misrepresented and misunderstood. Despite $792 billion in global ad spend, nearly half of women worldwide say brands and businesses continue to miss the mark, attempting to engage them with outdated stereotypes and missing a huge opportunity with a powerful, complex, multi-dimensional consumer who holds two-thirds of the world's discretionary spend in their pockets. The findings are part of The Collective® Economy: A Global Understanding of Women's Buying Power. The report leverages insights from 8,700 women across 10 countries, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, exploring how women live, spend, and perceive the world, and highlights where brands are falling short. In addition to capturing a holistic understanding of women's economic behaviors and attitudes, the report also introduces six new consumer personas that align diverse world views and shared experiences. This research provides a global pulse on how women perceive their marketing, by region, and where they believe brand marketers may be falling short. Spotlight on the Middle East In Saudi Arabia and the UAE, women are navigating a blend of tradition and ambition, and they expect brands to reflect that balance. In Saudi Arabia, 54% of women say family influences their daily decisions, and 52% are the main decision-makers for household purchases, guided by values like financial stability, health and personal growth. Yet 45% say brands don't understand them, and 49% say they don't feel empowered by how women are portrayed in advertising. These women are navigating a blend of cultural tradition and modern ambition. Many fall into the study's Family-First Realist persona – practical, values-led, and responsible for others. They're not asking brands to ignore culture; they want them to see the bigger picture. In the UAE, women are more likely to identify with the Empowered Advocate persona. 66% say family matters deeply in their decisions – the third-highest rate globally – but they also lead in education, careers, and caregiving roles. Over half (55%) are the primary decision-makers for purchasing in their home. Yet nearly half (48%) say brands don't understand them, and 41% do not feel empowered by the representation of women in marketing. These are educated, digitally savvy consumers with high expectations. They want to see ambition and tradition reflected side by side, and expect brands to meet that standard.
