Erie nonprofit group working to raise hope for foster families and children
Jun. 3—DIXON — What started as a closet full of supplies has grown into a nonprofit organization helping foster children and families across the Sauk Valley.
Raising Hope, Erie is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting foster and adoptive families by providing essential items — such as toiletries, diapers, wipes and clothing — completely free of charge.
The organization began in 2021 as a small "foster closet" created by Tiffany Garcea of Erie. Since then, it has evolved into a vital community resource, ensuring that children in care have access to the necessities they need.
"I started it as a response to some of the needs I encountered as a former foster parent over the years," Garcea said. "Sometimes children come into foster care and they don't have anything with them. Maybe there wasn't time to gather any personal possessions, and so this helps to ease that transition."
Garcea and her husband, Joey, are both pastors at local churches. They began fostering after learning about a child connected to Joey's church who was entering the foster care system.
"Although we weren't needed at that time, we did end up finding out about children who were sleeping on the floors of offices because they couldn't find enough foster parents in our area," Tiffany said. "So, that got us looking into the process of how to become foster parents."
After sharing her hopes and dreams of starting a foster closet in the area, Tiffany's friend and fellow Raising Hope board member, Stacy Bomleny, offered a space to start the endeavor. Eventually, more people became involved and in 2022, the small group had grown to become an officially recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, with board members Andrew Bohall and Leanne Holland.
"As word of mouth continues to spread and more people get involved in foster care, it has helped us to grow and reach more families in six counties across Illinois," Tiffany said.
Raising Hope depends on community donations and a handful of dedicated volunteers to help over 100 children each year in Whiteside, Lee, Ogle, Carroll, Jo Daviess and Rock Island counties.
The organization also hosts an annual Angel Tree Christmas present program and a summer carnival. This year's carnival will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at Heritage Park, 421 Highland Ave. in Erie.

Township to unveil new Veterans Memorial site, honor resident D-Day hero Jim ‘Pee Wee' Martin
Sugarcreek Township will be honoring one of their own and celebrating the brave individuals who serve our country when they unveil a new Veterans Memorial in August. According to Sugarcreek Township Administrator Barry Tiffany, the statue will stand 7 to 8 feet tall and will be positioned on top of a platform block in honor of all the veterans who served in WWII. 'The Veterans Memorial has been a vision item for the community for many years, and we have the funding now to make it a reality,' Tiffany said. The memorial has been in the works since 2022, as previously reported by News Center 7. The memorial will honor all Sugarcreek Township residents who have served in the military, past and present. 'Veterans and families can order pavers engraved with veteran information or family messages in support of our veterans,' Tiffany said. Union Mission's 10th annual ‘Raising Hope' gala raises awareness for homeless services
HUTCHINSON ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) — A local nonprofit that has been changing lives across Savannah has a big night ahead on Tuesday. Union Mission is hosting its 10th annual Raising Hope gala as it works to end homelessness. WSAV spoke with Union Mission on their plans to end homelessness in the region and how they intend to celebrate a decade of hosting the Raising Hope gala. More than 800 guests will gather at the convention center on Hutchinson Island Tuesday night to celebrate a decade of transformation and support. The sold-out event is not just a gala – it's a celebration of lives changed and a powerful look ahead. Union Mission's Raising Hope event has become one of the most impactful fundraisers in the Savannah area. This year is its biggest yet. In 2024 alone, Union Mission helped transition more than 770 individuals from homelessness to stable housing, providing over 185,000 nights of shelter and 260,000 meals. Tonight's gala is focused on funding even more success through the organization's emergency housing and supportive services. This year's goal? To raise at least $150,000 – money that directly fuels Union Mission's frontline work. 'It's not just talking about it is doing it. This event enables us to be able to do what we need to do over the next year,' said Michael Traynor, the President & CEO of Union Mission. 'We're just excited to be able to tell our story and get the support that we need to continue to do the programs that we have and be able to move forward.'
