Italy cracks down on violence against referees

The Hindu6 hours ago

Referees in Italy will now receive the same legal protection as police officers and other public officials, Sports Minister Andrea Abodi said, to help curb a rise in cases of assault in sports such as football.
A change to the penal code will mean much tougher penalties, include potentially jail, for acts of violence against match officials, including pushing, hitting, or threatening. The move follows months of discussions between the government and the Italian Football Referees Association.
The law, part of a decree approved by the Italian government late on Friday, extends protection to all officials responsible for ensuring sporting fixtures are conducted fairly.

Abuse towards match officials at all levels of Italian football has become a growing concern. In December, Serie A referees highlighted the issue by wearing black smudges on their cheeks during matches as a symbol of protest.
In one notorious example last season, 19-year-old referee Diego Alfonzetti was attacked when he took charge of a youth match in Sicily.
Alfonzetti was invited on to the pitch alongside the match officials before the Lazio-Rome Serie A derby in April as an act of solidarity.
'Sport is loyalty and sharing. Those who do not accept it are warned: from tomorrow violent behaviour and aggression against referees will be punished without delay, even with prison,' said Senator Andrea Ostellari, a junior justice minister.

Urawa will be playing for pride against CF Monterrey on Wednesday. 'I cannot find the words, I am so frustrated. ... We had the objective to go on to the next stage, so this loss is very hard for us. But we still have one more game to go. ... There are many fans who have come all the way or still remaining in Japan and cheering for us, so we would like to win for them.' — Urawa Red Diamonds goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa 'I was speaking to the day before yesterday, and he told me that it was eight months exactly since his cruciate ligament injury. Coming through an injury like that, with all of the hard work and graft he's had to put in ... you don't know whether you're going to come back to the peak of your powers. That's not easy at all, so it was lovely to see him so emotional. I was a little bit emotional as well. It brought a tear to my eye because he's a kid that I know very well. I'm delighted that he has the opportunity now to experience something as significant as that .' — Inter Milan head coach Cristian Chivu soccer: /hub/soccer This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Crews completed a complex recovery operation so that investigators can examine the vessel. The 56-meter (184-foot) yacht, named Bayesian was covered in algae and mud as it was raised by a large yellow floating crane near the port of Porticello in northern Sicily. "The body of the superyacht Bayesian has been successfully and safely recovered from the sea,' said TMC Maritime, the company in charge of conducting the recovery. They added that the yacht will remain suspended for checks before being moved to the port of Termini Imerese on Sunday. Once at the port, the yacht will be placed on a special steel cradle for investigators to examine it. They will further determine the cause behind its sinkage. The Bayesian sank on August 19 during a violent storm. Lynch was celebrating being cleared of fraud charges in the US with his friends. His daughter and five others also died. Fifteen people survived, including the captain and all crew members except the chef. Eight steel straps were used to raise the yacht and seawater was pumped out of the body during the process. According to a British investigation, the yacht was hit by extreme winds of over 70 knots (81 mph), causing it to tilt 90 degrees in under 15 seconds. The crew had stopped at the location believing it would provide shelter from the storm.
