Manipur pledges farmer security after shooting, woman's death
Guwahati: A day after a farmer was shot and a woman was killed in crossfire in Manipur's Bishnupur district, the state government on Friday announced it would provide security to farmers in vulnerable areas.
A senior police official confirmed that adequate security would be provided to ensure the safety of farmers in their fields and prevent further incidents.
These measures follow separate incidents on Thursday: a woman was killed in Churachandpur district and a farmer was shot in Bishnupur district.

The official stated that Ningthoujam Biren Singh, a
Meitei
cultivator from Phubala Awang Maning Leikai, was shot in his left arm by an unknown armed miscreant while working in his paddy field at Phubala Maning in Bishnupur district.
Singh was initially taken to the District Hospital in Bishnupur and later referred to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) medical college and hospital in Imphal. His condition is currently stable. In response, security forces launched a search operation in and around Langchingmanbi, Heichanglok, and the western areas of Phubala village.

NEW DELHI: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation on Saturday directed Air India to remove its three senior officials from all roles related to crew scheduling and rostering, news agency PTI reported quoting sources. As per the report, one of those named is a divisional vice president at the airline. On 12 June, Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London, tragically crashed into a hostel at BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad's Meghani Nagar, shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Of the 242 people aboard, 241 died, including former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, along with dozens more on the ground. In its order dated 20 June, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) directed Tata Group-owned Air India to promptly initiate internal disciplinary action against three officials. A week later, significant progress has been made in identifying victims. HYDERABAD: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has registered a case against Huzurnagar municipal commissioner Kankati Srinivas Reddy and two other officials for allegedly misappropriating Rs 7.2 lakh of govt funds during their earlier tenure in Tandur municipality under 'Pattana Pragathi' scheme. The ACB action followed a vigilance inquiry after a complaint by Ward 13 councillor of Tandur municipality, Varala Srinivas Reddy, accusing the commissioner and two engineers of creating bills for fictitious development work using benami contractors by falsifying records. The ACB FIR, issued on May 5, said that Srinivas Reddy, Mohd Younus (deputy executive engineer), and Gopala Mahesh (assistant engineer) colluded to siphon off govt funds in the name fake development work. The FIR said that in one instance the complainant personally undertook silt removal in Chilakavagu, a drain flowing through his ward, using his own resources. However, officials sanctioned Rs 3 lakh in the name of another individual, R Santosh Kumar, for the same work. In another case, officials exaggerated the usage of an excavator during the second phase of the scheme. LUCKNOW: Just half a kilometre away from the Signature Building — the Uttar Pradesh Police Headquarters in Lucknow — whispers of scandal swirled around a flat in Omaxe R1, where Thrijin Raj alias Arjun Rana (33), posing as a journalist with GTS News, lived with his Uzbek live-in partner, Lola Kayumova (48). Their seemingly ordinary life by day turned sinister under the cover of night. Originally from Alappuzha, Kerala, Thrijin had rented apartment Orchid B104, where two other Uzbek women, Holida and Nilofar, also resided. 'All the occupants of the apartment are allegedly involved in a sex racket, whose kingpin is a plastic surgeon practicing in Lucknow for over 11 years. He has been identified as Dr Vivek Gupta,' said an official source. Dr Vivek Gupta The case came to light following a tip-off to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Lucknow. The FRRO team first developed ground intelligence on the accused and later roped in the Sushant Golf City police of the Lucknow Commissionerate to investigate further. Another person named in the FIR is Thrijin Raj alias Arjun Rana. Thrijin Raj arranged fake Indian IDs for the trafficked women — including voter ID cards, Aadhaar, and others. Dr Vivek Gupta played a key role by using his plastic surgery skills to alter facial features, making the Uzbek women resemble Indian nationals. All these women were then forced into prostitution,' added the source. In the FIR, Holida and Nilofar claimed their passports and visas were stolen two years ago. They have further informed police that over the years, several other foreign nationals also entered India with Lola Kayumova's help, and many of them had visited Dr Vivek Gupta's clinic for plastic surgery. 'Their apartment became a hub of nocturnal activity, with frequent visits from foreign women. Cloaked in secrecy, these women were ferried around the city in local cabs, disappearing into the night. Thrijin was running much more than a news desk,' said a local resident of Omaxe R1. Police have recovered Thrijin's Aadhaar card, bank documents, journalist ID card, his father Rajan's Aadhaar, and both the passport and Aadhaar card of Lola Kayumova. Interestingly, Thrijin's Aadhaar lists the address as Baldev Vihar, Telibagh — about 13 km from Omaxe R1. 'The role of the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) of Omaxe R1 must also be investigated — how was such a flat rented to this group despite glaring irregularities?' the resident added. Further legal sections are expected to be invoked as the investigation progresses, according to official sources.
