NZ thrash Pakistan 6-2 to win Nations Cup, book spot in FIH Pro League

BUKIT JALIL: New Zealand have booked their spot in the FIH Pro League once again after thrashing Pakistan 6-2 in the final of the Nations Cup at the National Hockey Stadium on Saturday (June 21).
New Zealand, who won last year's edition in Poland, were eager to take the lead and got their wish when Scott Cosslett converted a penalty corner six minutes into the match.
Then the defending champions hit Pakistan in quick succession, with three goals coming in four minutes thanks to Sam Hiha (15th minute), Dylan Thomas (17th), and Sean Findlay (18th), followed by their fifth goal in the 27th minute from Scott Boyde.
Trailing far behind, Pakistan tried their best to mount a comeback, and reduced the margin after Zikriya Hayat scored a field goal in the 36th minute.
In the final minutes, Cosslett scored his fifth goal of the tournament to make it six for New Zealand, and Sufyan Khan scored Pakistan's second goal with a minute left on the clock.
It was a better result for Pakistan this year after they finished in fourth place last year.

Liu Ying says communication with coach key to overcoming crisis
KUALA LUMPUR: National mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei have been advised to continue to communicate openly with their coaches should they face any tension in their collaboration on the court. Former national mixed doubles player Goh Liu Ying said the world number four pair not only needs to communicate with each other, but should discuss more in depth with their coaches to ensure they are on the same track and goal. 'Harimau should pounce on rare Nations Cup opportunity'
KUALA LUMPUR: The Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Nations Cup offers a rare opportunity for Harimau Malaya to play world class teams outside Southeast Asia, said Datuk Jamal Nasir. Former international Jamal said this means Malaysia will not have to play the same old faces again in the region. And the national side get to prove themselves against more physical and tactically advanced nations. "Going to the Cafa Nations Cup is good exposure for our team because there are higher-ranked teams there. These are Arab nations, and we've had little exposure to them and we always lose. So now we have a chance to prove that we are better," he said. He also supports the national team's move to "play less against Asean teams" and focus more on matches outside the region. "It's not that we belittle Asean teams, but we must move forward.
