Goals galore for Aussie hockey aces in Pro League romps

Australia's national hockey teams have enjoyed another stand-out day in the FIH Pro League with the Kookaburras continuing their title defence by hitting Ireland for six in Belgium before the Hockeyroos outclassed their English hosts 3-0 in London. The men's team were the first in action on Wednesday in Antwerp, the Kookaburras brushing aside Ireland 6-1 - exactly the same score they'd beaten them by 24 hours earlier in Antwerp and a fifth consecutive victory on their European sojourn. Their unbeaten European run has seen the team shoot up six places to second in the standings, but still nine points adrift of strong tournament favourites, the Netherlands. Australia were once again in a different class to a struggling Irish outfit, with two goals from Nathan Ephraums, and further strikes from Jeremy Hayward, Craig Marais, Davis Atkin and Ky Willott - courtesy of a brilliant volleyed assist from Tom Craig - sealing the most comfortable of victories. "It was nice to back up last night's match with another win. The Irish are very tough and to score six goals against a team like that is a great result," said Marais. "We've got a reasonably young group and there's not much fear. We've been given the licence from Mark Hager and the coaching staff to play with freedom and you can see that in a lot of the boys, everyone's taking the game on, everyone's supporting each other and it's really enjoyable." On a sweltering afternoon at the Lee Valley Centre in London, with temperatures nearing 36°C at pushback, Australia's Hockeyroos were this time too hot for their hosts, just 24 hours after losing 1-0 to the same opponents. The Hockeyroos broke the deadlock in the second quarter, with Moreton Bay's Jade Smith lashing home a blistering finish - her fifth goal in 12 appearances since making her debut in February. They doubled their advantage on a counter-attack in the 38th minute with Grace Stewart netting her 38th international goal before Greta Hayes sealed the win in the final quarter. "The team has been putting in a lot of effort behind closed doors, so to come out here and get the win is a huge result," said player of the match Tatum Stewart. The Hockeyroos are now fourth in the table, but well adrift of the top three, with the Netherlands already crowned champions ahead of Argentina and Belgium. Ireland suffer comprehensive defeat to Australia

IRELAND SUFFERED A 6-1 defeat to Australia in the teams' second FIH Pro League encounter in Antwerp today. Mark Tumilty's men were beaten by the same scoreline against the Aussies on Tuesday. A decent start saw Ireland level with the current FIH Pro League title holders and the world-ranked number five side in the early stages. Advertisement Lee Cole scored from a penalty corner to equalise, after Nathan Ephraums opened the scoring. But Jeremy Hayward soon restored the Kookaburra's lead through a penalty corner of their own, before Ephraums extended his side's advantage. Craig Marais capitalised on a defensive error to score his side's fourth before Davis Atkin added a fifth after Jonny Lynch had been yellow-carded for a collision in the middle of the park. Ky Willott made it six in the final quarter, but the game had long since become a formality. The victory moves Australia to second in the FIH Pro League table behind leaders The Netherlands. 'We let ourselves down playing with 10 players for large parts,' Ireland captain Kyle Marshall said afterwards. 'A couple of green and yellow cards that we have to be disappointed with ourselves for receiving. We know that teams will hurt you when you are playing with one less player. 'We definitely applied ourselves well during those periods, but the longer you are in those periods, the more you are open to conceding goals, and little mistakes compound.' Ireland play their final two FIH Pro League matches of the 2024-25 season against Spain on 21 and 22 June at 9.30am Irish time. Both games will be available to watch live on the TG4 player.

India stage heroic comeback to hold Argentina but relegation risk looms

India were left ruing the missed chances after the team came back from a two-goal deficit, levelled the scores, forced penalty shoot-outs, but were unable to convert even one attempt in a nail-biting FIH Pro League contest against Argentina. After holding the heavyweights 2-2 in the regulation time, Deepika, Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, Lalremsiami, and Baljeet Kaur missed their chances in the tie-breakers while Brisa Bruggesser and Sofia Cairo scored for Argentina to take the bonus points home. The draw — and inability to pocket a bonus point — means that the women's team has 10 points from 12 matches to be placed seventh in the nine-team competition. They are now in danger of being relegated to the Nations League, the second-tier competition, unless they manage to earn points from the remaining games. India coach Harendra Singh wanted his players to be 'sharp and agile in the shooting circle'. While they ticked those two boxes, indecisiveness inside the 'D' meant they could capitalise on the chances they created. India started brilliantly, taking on the Argentine defence and entering the circle six times in the first quarter while Argentina managed to enter the Indian circle only once. But the circle penetrations meant nothing as the Indian forward line failed to convert. Sharmila Devi received a through ball from the midfield in the fourth minute, but she failed to keep it under control. In the seventh minute, Navneet Kaur dodged two Argentine midfielders and entered the circle but failed to put away the shot. Two minutes later, Sharmila was again guilty of not controlling the ball from the flanks. India made some dazzling moves with Lalremsiami running all the way to the shooting circle in the tenth minute, but once again, there was no meaningful shot on goal. India started the second quarter with the same intent, with youngster Sunelita Toppo running from the midfield, carrying the ball into the Argentine 'D'. But her indecisiveness cost India another chance as she didn't really test goalkeeper Cristina Cosentino. After India fluffed multiple attempts, Argentina started attacking, but the Indian defence stood the test. In the 24th minute, India earned a penalty corner as Jyoti Singh found the leg of Maria Granatto. Deepika's flick found another defender, resulting in another penalty corner. India tried a variation with Navneet taking the shot, but Cosentino was up to the task, going down quickly to deflect the shot. Argentina earned their first penalty corner in the 26th minute and immediately capitalised as Agustina Gorzelany continued her superb form to score the game's opening goal. Argentina protected the lead going into half-time. They doubled their lead minutes after resumption when Sofia Cairo glided with the ball into the Indian circle in the 37th minute and earned the second penalty corner for her team. Gorzelany was at it once again, scoring another penalty corner goal. The Argentines amped up the attack with two shots from the forward line, but Indian custodian Savita Punia was up to the task, saving both times. Deepika created another chance in the 43rd minute with a shot from the top of the circle. But it was saved by Cosentino. In the final quarter, Argentina were the dominant side with nine circle penetrations. But Navneet scored a superb field goal with a powerful shot in the 50th minute, while Deepika converted a penalty corner in the 55th minute to force the shootout. In the tie-breaker, India could not convert a single chance and were hence unable to earn a bonus point. India will travel to Belgium to take on the hosts over the weekend and then proceed to Germany for the last two games against China.
