As deadline ends today, over 86% Maharashtra schools complete geo-tagging process
Over 86 per cent of schools in Maharashtra have completed the geo-tagging process as of April 30, the deadline set by the government, according to data available on the MahaSchool portal.
Out of the 1,08,301 schools in the state, 93,548 schools, that constitute 86.38 per cent, have been mapped while 14,753 remain unmapped, the data said.
The School Education and Sports Department, through a government resolution dated March 23, mandated schools to complete a 'geo-tagging' process involving the capture of the Geographic Information System (GIS) location, which includes the latitude and longitude along with the timestamp.
In addition, the schools are bound to upload five photos of the school building, the kitchen shed, the boys' and girls' washrooms, and the drinking water facility on the 'Maha School GIS' mobile application.
As per the latest update, Sindhudurg district has the highest percentage of schools mapped at 97.76, while Mumbai (Suburban) has the lowest at 73.46 per cent. In terms of numbers, Pune has the highest number of schools mapped at 6,648 schools, while Hingoli has the lowest at 1,024.
The circular stated that geo-tagging of schools is being done as the Unified District Information System For Education Plus (UDISE +) portal does not have data like the physical locations of these schools, settlements, villages, roads, and highways, the distance between two schools, and facilities provided by other government facilities near these schools.
It contained only information like the number of schools and teachers, and facilities available in the school.
To fill this gap, a contract was signed with the Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre (MRSAC) on February 5. Under this, data of various departments available with MRSAC and UDISE + data will be combined and made available on a separate dashboard.
The Maha School GIS, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on April 22, has also been developed by the MRSAC. Maharashtra Commissioner for Education Sachindra Pratap Singh was unavailable for a comment.

Maharashtra: Lakhs of Warkaris perform yoga with CM Fadnavis on 11th International Day of Yoga in Pune
Pune (Maharashtra) [India], June 21 (ANI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday celebrated the 11th International Yoga Day with lakhs of Warkaris at Savitribai Phule Pune University in Pune, highlighting the state's rich cultural heritage and the growing popularity of yoga globally. Fadnavis mentioned that yoga sessions were conducted simultaneously at various locations where Warkaris stayed overnight, connecting them to the main event. 'We are delighted that today on #InternationalYogaDay, a wonderful event was organised on the premises of Savitribai Phule Pune University. Maharashtra has an ancient tradition of 'Wari', where lakhs of Warkaris go on foot for the darshan of Lord Vitthal; all those Warkaris are in Pune today. They stayed in Pune last night. We connected all the places they stayed at simultaneously to this event and performed Yoga,' said Fadnavis. The warkari-tradition is a non-Brahamanical tradition or a bhakti movement, which worships Vithoba, also known as Vitthal, who is regarded as a form of Vishnu or Krishna. Vithoba is often depicted as a dark young boy, standing arms akimbo on a brick, sometimes accompanied by his main consort Rakhumai. The Varkari-tradition is geographically associated with the Indian states of Maharashtra and northern Karnataka. Saints and gurus of the bhakti movement associated with the Warkaris include Dnyaneshwar, Namdev, Chokhamela, Eknath, and Tukaram, Gadge Maharaj all of whom are accorded the title of Sant. The event highlighted Maharashtra's ancient tradition of 'Wari,' where devotees undertake a pilgrimage to seek the blessings of Lord Vitthal. The incorporation of yoga into this cultural practice underscores the state's commitment to wellness and spiritual growth. Over 700 institutions affiliated with Pune Vidyapeeth participated in the yoga event, showcasing the widespread enthusiasm for yoga in the region. Speaking to the reporters, Devendra Fadnavis said, 'Besides this, Yoga was also performed at 700 institutions of Pune Vidyapeeth. So, a grand event has been organised.' He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking India's ancient practice of holistic healing to the global stage. 'I want to express gratitude to PM Narendra Modi that our ancient culture, lifestyle, medical practice where mind and body are both thought about, which is called holistic healing today; Yoga has that capability and that has been adopted by all countries globally, with the efforts of PM Modi,' Fadnavis said. While Devendra Fadnavis's wife Amruta Fadnavis, said that it is because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the world now understands the importance of yoga. She added that yoga has become a way of life for many people across the globe and should not be done just for photos, but practiced every day. 'It is because of PM Modi that the world has acknowledged the importance of entire world has accepted Yoga as a lifestyle, and they are celebrating it. Chandigarh leads Centre's school education index: Check rankings of other states

The report published by the Union Ministry of Education for 2022-23 and 2023-24 on Thursday details the assessment of school education across various indicators, such as learning outcomes and infrastructure. Chandigarh recorded maximum improvement and achieved a score of 703 out of 1,000, corresponding to Prachesta 1 grade. Emerging as the best-performing Union Territory, it improved its score from 687.8 recorded in the 2022-23 session. The education sector evaluation report is based on six key domains, namely, learning outcomes and quality, access, infrastructure, equity, governance processes, teacher education and training. It features data from Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+), National Achievement Survey (NAS), PM POSHAN portal, PRABAND portal and Vidyanjali Portal. It is important to note that none of the states featured in the top-scoring range, which is above 761. A total of 24 States and Union Territories improved their scores in 2023-24 compared with the previous year's data. Notably, Chandigarh leads in only two of the six domains, which are infrastructure and facilities and equity. Delhi, Punjab and Gujarat recorded a score above 600. Delhi's score stood at 623.7, indicating marked improvement from the previous 579.3. Punjab and Gujarat, other top performers, recorded scores of 631.2 and 614.4, respectively. On the other hand, Meghalaya registered least improvement in performance indicators and recorded the least score of 417.9, as per Performance Grading Index report. All of northeastern states, including Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh recorded a score below 500, except for Sikkim, Tripura and Assam.
