Central government scheme provides ray of hope for revised GIS mapping of water lines and sewer network to resolve civic issues, and create safer streets
As the preparatory work on schemes for special assistance to States for capital investment by the Central government has started this month, residents and councillors in the city have demanded utilisation of the funds this year for mapping of municipal assets, existing water sewerage, storm water drainage network on GIS portal and GATI Shakti Portal to resolve civic issues. The civic body has also planned to implement a safe city street plan under the scheme for women, persons with disability and children, based on consultations with residents. Residents have complained that many civic issues about water supply and sewage have not been resolved while a few have been resolved after a delay of several weeks owing to the lack of proper mapping of the assets underground. GCC and Metrowater workers have not been able to identify the water supply lines underneath roads for resolving civic issues. Federation of North Chennai Residents Association president said drinking water has been polluted by mixing of sewage in most of the roads of north Chennai. 'Residents have complained. But the civic agencies require funds for resolving such issues. The State government should get more funds from the Central government to resolve the issue of water supply and sewage in north Chennai,' he said The northern zones of GCC are likely to benefit from the scheme for special assistance to States for capital investment by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for urban reforms in the year 2025 -2026. Residents have demanded the civic agencies compile baseline data for all components to be submitted in 30 days. As part of the reforms, states are expected to map, digitise existing water networks, stormwater drains and sewage network layers in GIS platform mandatorily all GIS utility maps on PM Gati Shakti portal. The funds under the scheme will also be utilised for implementation of a safe city street plan. The streets will be safer for women, persons with disability and children. Iron ore plant takes shape in Prakasam as JSW joins hands with Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation
1 2 3 Vijayawada: In a major boost to industrial development in the backward Prakasam district, the state govt has roped in steel giant JSW to take up an iron ore beneficiation plant. The project is expected to generate local employment and revitalize the region's mineral economy. The AP Mineral Development Corporation (APMDC) has signed an MoU with JSW to kick-start the iron ore beneficiation plant near Konijedu and Marlapadu village of Tangutur mandal. The state govt has spared about 1300 acres of land for setting up the iron ore beneficiation plant. In fact, the issue of setting up the iron plant in Prakasam has been on the cards for several years since Geological Survey of India (GIS) found iron ore reserves. After carrying out the initial studies, it was found that the iron ore available in the area is not of fine quality. This resulted in a delay in getting investments into the area. APMDC itself carried out separate studies and found that the mineral available in Prakasam districts could be utilized in steel and other allied industries after purification. Sources said that the local mineral has just around 30% iron content. However, the grading would be improved after beneficiation. According to the deal made with APMDC, JSW itself will launch the exploration operation and purchase the iron ore stock at the price fixed by Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM). Subsequently, JSW will process it in the plant and sell it in the market and also utilize in its own plants. JSW will pay 11% royalty to APMDC from the processed stock. Sources said that JSW would set up the plant and also manage it with its own cost.

Planet and Tony Blair Institute for Global Change Enable Data-Driven Policy for the Government of Zanzibar
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL), a leading provider of daily data and insights about change on Earth, today announced the successful completion of their pilot project with the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI) to help enable informed decision-making for the government of Zanzibar. This 12-month initiative aimed to equip government leaders with access to Planet satellite data and the digital skills to interpret geospatial data and apply its insights to real-world decisions across the nation. Over the course of the year, TBI and Planet provided high-resolution and high-cadence satellite data and technical support to over ten government agencies in Zanzibar. With a growing population, the government of this island nation explored how the data could reveal insights for resource management, infrastructure planning, and land-use evaluations. Through this project, Planet granted the government access to its varied suite of satellite data products, including Planet's near-daily 3 m global satellite imagery for tracking daily change, like land-use and infrastructure development, and Planet's taskable high-resolution 50cm SkySat data to capture detailed fleeting moments in time, such as the impacts of natural disasters. Government leaders were also able to utilize Planet's digital education tools as well as the Planet Insights Platform to visualize and run geospatial analysis with the satellite data. Through this collaboration, TBI led the process with government leaders to ensure GIS training, data delivery, and support for policy implementation. Now, at the completion of the pilot, government stakeholders are implementing geospatial data into their work and testing use cases. For example, according to TBI, agencies have already identified over 18,300 building footprints across the country and strengthened flood-prone infrastructure by 20%. "Government agencies are unlocking brand new perspectives with access to Planet's robust satellite data. With the right tools, education, and skills, we're helping them extract valuable insights from it and shift away from reactive approaches to policy and towards proactive, data-informed decision-making. Bringing cutting-edge technologies like satellite imagery to the centre of government enables us to reimagine the state and how government delivers,' said Emily Stanger Sfeile, TBI's Executive Director for Partnerships and Initiatives. The success of this pilot has demonstrated a project model with great potential to be scaled to a multi-year and multi-government initiative. By revealing key learnings and applications, the project has helped inform TBI and Planet regarding best practices for expansion and government implementation. Forest school imparts training in use of geospatial tools
Guwahati: Assam Forest School in Jalukbari has enhanced forester training by incorporating contemporary geospatial tools for daily forest management, officials said on Sunday. Geospatial technologies like GIS and GPS provide forest staff with accurate tools for planning, surveillance, and decision-making. According to experts, these tools assist in developing detailed forest coverage maps, monitoring wildlife movements, evaluating habitat change, and supporting evidence-based conservation. A six-day thematic refresher training on open-source GIS software for forester-I was recently completed at the Assam Forest School, Jalukbari. As many as 20 forester-I trainees and one junior assistant from across 20 forest divisions across the state participated in the programme. The training commenced with Preeti Buragorhain, DCF in charge of conservator of forest, Dr Priyasha Saikia, DFO, Guwahati Social Forestry Division, and Dimpi Bora, director of Assam Forest School, Jalukbari, in attendance. The programme aimed to enhance the technical proficiency of ground-level forest staff through practical training. "Trainees were introduced to GPS and its applications in forestry and wildlife, GPS and mobile app-based data collection methods, the use of Google Earth Pro in mapping with relevant case studies, an overview of GIS data types and sources, digitisation of points, lines, and polygons in Google Earth Pro, and also included the fundamentals of map composition using QGIS software," a organiser said. Aaranyak's resource persons conducted the six-day training sessions. Forest officials highlighted GIS's vital role in their department. With forests facing threats from deforestation, encroachment, and climate change, precise monitoring and management have become crucial, they noted. The closing ceremony was attended by chief guest Dibakar Deb, a silviculturist. Participants pledged to implement their new skills.
