The move comes at a time when China has imposed export curbs on rare earths and Indian industry has raised alarm bells on shortage of magnets and other components. India is looking at a Rs 3,500-Rs 5,000 crore scheme to promote the production of rare earth minerals and derived magnets domestically, with approval expected within two weeks, according to a senior government official. "The priority is to start domestic-critical mineral production in the shortest time period," the official told ET. China dominates global supply of rare earth magnets and has implemented export restrictions. These essential minerals, vital for manufacturing automobiles, electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy infrastructure, face supply constraints. The incentives in India's proposed programme will be distributed through a reverse bidding mechanism. This initiative follows an internal ministerial assessment that highlighted the necessity to diversify supply sources, given the substantial reliance on imports from China. India's Rare Earth Requirements The automotive sector has highlighted concerns about Chinese restrictions and requested governmental assistance. In April, Beijing introduced mandatory special export licences for seven rare earth elements and associated magnets. In India, manufacturers of EVs and wind turbines represent the primary consumers of rare earth elements, accounting for more than 50% of the projected domestic demand of 4010 metric tonnes in 2025. The overall requirement is anticipated to reach 8220 metric tonnes by 2030. Beyond regulatory adjustments, the Centre anticipates limited but commercially viable domestic production of rare earth permanent magnets to commence later this year. YouTuber Gaurav Taneja, also known as Flying Beast, lauded the Air India pilots for refusing to fly unsafe aircraft after the unfortunate crash in Ahmedabad on June 12. Contrary to this, the ex-pilot revealed that airlines habitually overlooked the safety measures, resulting in such tragic incidents. He ruled out bad weather as one of the significant reasons behind the incident and went on to explain the loopholes of the airlines. In a well-informed video on his YouTube channel, Taneja highlighted the safety standards in the Indian aviation industry while addressing various theories about the tragic Air India Flight 171 crash. He said the dual-engine failure was possibly the only reason the Air India flight crashed. 'In the event of bad weather, the aircraft warns the pilots to either delay takeoff or abort takeoff… A 787 has two radars, one on the left and one on the right. For dispatch, it is necessary for at least one to be functional," he said. He continued, 'If the aircraft has 100 pieces of equipment, the rulebook says that it can function even if 30 of them have failed. But they have a habit of overlooking these snags." Revolt Motors has achieved a production milestone with the rollout of 50,000 electric motorcycles from its manufacturing plant in Manesar, Haryana. The milestone unit to roll out from the plant is an RV1 plus sporting Titan Red Silver colour. Additionally, the manufacturer plans on increasing the production capacity of the plant to 3 lakh electric motorcycles by the end of 2026. At present, Revolt's Manesar facility has an annual production capacity of 180,000 units. The intended expansion of capacity aims to meet the increasing demand for electric motorcycles and to bolster the company's growth strategy both domestically and internationally. Revolt Motors has more than 200 dealerships throughout India and has recently ventured into Nepal and Sri Lanka. To facilitate its manufacturing expansion, the company also plans to grow its dealership network to 400 locations, thereby enhancing its presence across India and key international markets in South Asia and the Middle East. The current range of products offered by the company includes models such as the RV400, RV1+, and RV BlazeX, all featuring lithium-ion batteries, various riding modes, regenerative braking, and road-ready suspensions designed for Indian terrain.
