Watch: Benson Boone performs, discusses 'American Heart' on 'Tonight'
June 5 (UPI) -- Benson Boone performed "Momma Song" and discussed his upcoming album American Heart on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.
The singer, 22, took to the stage in a brown leather jacket and sang about a profound love for his mother, along with a knowledge that moments with her would one day become memories he'd cherish.
The track will appear on American Heart, due June 20.
He told Fallon that his album title was inspired by his song "Young American Heart."
"And to me that's like the inspiration track of the whole album, and it's about me and my best friend," he told Fallon. "...When we were younger, we got in a car accident, and it wasn't, like, a typical car accident. We were driving in a field. We were driving in his backyard and we flipped the car."
He said he was either 15 or 16 when the wreck occurred, and it changed his perspective.
"It was like the first time in my life that I was like, 'Oh my gosh, like, this dude, my best friend, he means everything to me. I don't want to die right now,'" Boone said.
Boone also discussed his upcoming arena tour, which kicks off Aug. 22 in Minnesota and winds down Oct. 8 in Utah.
"This is by far the biggest tour I've ever done, and it's a big moment for me, for people to just know who I am, you go to the show and this is, by far, the best performance I will ever, up to this point in my life, put on," he said. "And it's a full-on show. I might even change my outfit during the show."

Lauren Cohan: Maggie-Hershel relationship is complex, sad in 'Dead City' S2

Photo by Robert Clark/AMC NEW YORK, June 22 (UPI) -- Lauren Cohan says she thinks Maggie's strained relationship with her teen son Hershel (Logan Kim) in Season 2 of the zombie-apocalypse drama, The Walking Dead: Dead City, resonates with viewers because it is such a common parent-child dynamic. "That part of the story-line has been really complex and real and sad, and we get to unpack all of this, but mostly because he is a teenage boy and it is his responsibility to NOT do what's best for himself," Cohan told reporters during a recent New York Comic Con press conference. "No," she laughed. "It just comes with the territory that there's going to be a push and pull between he and I, and I think that's what makes the season really relatable for me. We've all been teenagers, and we've all known that nothing our parents say or do, can ever be right, and the rub for Maggie is that the influences that aren't her -- she's not a perfect parent either -- but the influences that aren't her are particularly dire." The Walking Dead spin-off, Dead City, shows Maggie teaming up with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), her husband's baseball-bat-wielding murderer, for an unlikely mission in New York to rescue Hershel from the clutches of the Croat (Zelijko Ivanek), a power-hungry mad man who just happens to idolize Negan and to whom Hershel has become devoted. So, I like the fact that we do this on the scale of the apocalypse, but it's issues that are close to the heart." Playing resourceful and loyal community leader Maggie for two seasons on Dead City and 10 seasons on the flagship series, The Walking Dead, has taught the actress the importance of perseverance and leaving one's comfort zone. "You could rest on your laurels or not look for a challenge within yourself as a performer or as a teammate," Cohan said. "I do find myself to be very different from [Maggie] in many ways and I'm always looking for ways that I'm similar," she added. "Knowing the best way to swing a hammer [is one]. One of the things that we, in this world, have more of a luxury to do is self-reflection and there will be more of that in our show and, so, I guess it's just art informing life, informing art." Watch Benson Boone Embrace His Haters in Joke-Filled ‘Mr. Electric Blue' Music Video
Since blasting onto the scene with his breakthrough hit 'Beautiful Things,' Benson Boone has become the internet's favorite punching bag. But instead of trying to prove them wrong, the singer decided to lean in with his latest music video. On Friday (June 20), Boone dropped the tongue-in-cheek music video for his new song 'Mr. Electric Blue,' off his just-released LP American Heart. From the start of the clip, Boone goes out of his way to play with all the worst things the internet has to say about him when he walks into 'Industry Plant Records' wearing a t-shirt that simply says 'one hit wonder' for a frank conversation with his sleazy agent (played by his frequent songwriting collaborator Jack LaFrantz). What ensues is a madcap montage, where Boone takes as many odd jobs as he can to raise the money. He walks dogs (while wearing another T-shirt that says ''), mows lawns (for a company called 'Auto-Tune Trimmers'), washes cars (with bumper stickers declaring 'mustaches are lame') sells his sparkly jumpsuits and even opens a moonbeam ice cream truck. Of course, that still doesn't stop the criticism from coming — when he's recognized by a little girl as 'the guy who sings 'Beautiful Things,'' she quickly humbles him: 'Your music is terrible.' For his hustling and hard work, Boone makes a grand total of $168, but begs LaFrantz's agent to give him another chance. But his agent assures him that he found a better solution, saying he 'sold your entire catalog to retail chains, fast food chains and movie theaters,' promising that 'you'll be the most overplayed artist in the world, and I'll be rich.' A dejected Boone sighs and smiles, saying 'that's all I've ever wanted,' before celebrating his ubiquity. It's far from the first time Boone has commented on the way people perceive him. The singer posted a TikTok back in April, explaining that he could understand people not liking him or his music if there were more people offering concrete reasons for their distaste. 'I just read a comment that said 'idek why I hate Benson Boone but it feels right,'' he wrote on the video. 'Like WHAT!!? how am I supposed to improve after reading that?
