Watch: Benson Boone performs, discusses 'American Heart' on 'Tonight'
June 5 (UPI) -- Benson Boone performed "Momma Song" and discussed his upcoming album American Heart on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. The singer, 22, took to the stage in a brown leather jacket and sang about a profound love for his mother, along with a knowledge that moments with her would one day become memories he'd cherish. The track will appear on American Heart, due June 20. He told Fallon that his album title was inspired by his song "Young American Heart." "And to me that's like the inspiration track of the whole album, and it's about me and my best friend," he told Fallon. "...When we were younger, we got in a car accident, and it wasn't, like, a typical car accident. We were driving in a field. We were driving in his backyard and we flipped the car." He said he was either 15 or 16 when the wreck occurred, and it changed his perspective. "It was like the first time in my life that I was like, 'Oh my gosh, like, this dude, my best friend, he means everything to me. I don't want to die right now,'" Boone said. Boone also discussed his upcoming arena tour, which kicks off Aug. 22 in Minnesota and winds down Oct. 8 in Utah. "This is by far the biggest tour I've ever done, and it's a big moment for me, for people to just know who I am, you go to the show and this is, by far, the best performance I will ever, up to this point in my life, put on," he said. "And it's a full-on show. I might even change my outfit during the show."

Benson Boone's New Single Ends His Winning Streak
Later this month, Benson Boone will release his sophomore album American Heart. The singer-songwriter has been promoting the upcoming project for months with a handful of singles, and most of the tunes he's dropped from the full-length have both become big hits in the United Kingdom. The Grammy nominee, however, breaks his winning streak this week with 'Momma Song.' The third official cut from the sophomore effort didn't turn out to be the smash he was hoping for — or the kind of success he's earned before. 'Momma Song' debuts on two charts across the Atlantic this week. A tune that slows things down a bit compared to his previous poppy efforts, 'Momma Song' enters the Official Singles Downloads list at No. 48 and the Official Singles Sales chart at No. 50. That puts it right in the middle of the latter tally, which tracks the bestselling tracks of any style and on any format in the U.K. As it debuts, 'Momma Song' becomes the first single from American Heart to miss the main ranking of the most consumed tracks in the U.K. Both 'Sorry, I'm Here for Someone Else' and 'Mystical Magical' have already spent at least a month on that busy list, which blends sales and streams to show what the British public is listening to. The two tunes have already cracked the top 20, and while 'Momma Song' could join them in the coming weeks, the track is not off to a great start, like the kind its predecessors enjoyed. This week, both 'Sorry, I'm Here for Someone Else' and 'Mystical Magical' drop on the Official Singles chart, but the two remain top 40 wins. The former, which served as the lead promotional cut from American Heart, dips to No. 25. 'Mystical Magical,' the more recent of the two, descends by just three spaces to No. 18. Those tracks peaked at Nos. 20 and 13, respectively. 'Sorry, I'm Here for Someone Else' and 'Mystical Magical' currently appear on four tallies apiece in the U.K., including the Official Streaming list as well as both sales-only charts, where 'Momma Song' debuts. 'Mystical Magical' is only a few spots behind 'Momma Song,' which speaks volumes about the popularity of the second official American Heart single, but doesn't say a whole lot about the ballad that was pushed as the third promotional cut, which slightly disappoints as it arrives.

Lorde Celebrates ‘Man of the Year' in New Video
Lorde continues teasing her fourth album, Virgin, with second single 'Man of the Year.' The track follows her April release 'What Was That.' Like the entirety of Virgin, Lorde worked on the song with producer Jim-E Stack. The track also features Dev Hynes on cello. On the mid-tempo single, Lorde reflects on her 'recent ego-death,' singing about how we're meeting her at a very strange time in her life. The accompanying music video features the singer-songwriter alone in a room in a white tee and jeans. As the song progresses, she peels off her shirt and duct-tapes her breasts before she sings, 'Now I'm broken open/Let's hear it for the man of the year.' More from Rolling Stone Everything We Know About Lorde's Upcoming Album 'Virgin' Benson Boone Delivers a Tender Tribute With 'Momma Song' The Everyday Items That Inspired Lorde's New Album, From 5 Gum to Apple Headphones In her Rolling Stone cover story, Lorde revealed that the song was an integral part of her understanding the fluidity of her own gender identity. She recalled sitting on the floor of her apartment, trying to visualize a version of herself 'that was fully representative of how [her] gender felt in that moment.' She landed on an image of herself wearing men's jeans, duct tape on her chest, and a gold chain. 'I went to the cupboard, and I got the tape out, and I did it to myself,' she said. 'I have this picture staring at myself. I was blond [at the time]. It scared me what I saw. I didn't understand it. But I felt something bursting out of me. It was crazy. It was something jagged. There was this violence to it.' The song was also written shortly after Lorde chose to stop taking birth control for the first time since she was a teenager. It led to her ovulating for the first time in years, an experience she likened to the 'best drug' she's ever done. 'I felt like stopping taking my birth control, I had cut some sort of cord between myself and this regulated femininity,' she said. 'It sounds crazy, but I felt that all of a sudden, I was off the map of femininity. And I totally believed that that allowed things to open up.' Lorde described herself as 'in the middle gender-wise.' She still uses she/her pronouns and identifies as a cis woman. Virgin is set to release on June 27, four years after her last album, Solar Power. Benson Boone's New Single Starts Strong, Just Behind No. 1
In less than a month, Benson Boone will release his hugely-anticipated sophomore album, American Heart. The full-length is expected to drop on June 20, and the pop singer is doling out tunes from the 10-song set at a rapid pace. He currently has a pair of singles on the Billboard charts from the forthcoming effort, and as of this Friday (May 23), he has now shared a third cut — one which may be on its way to becoming another top seller for the superstar. Boone dropped the third official single from American Heart, "Momma Song," at the beginning of the new tracking week. For a period of time, it ruled the iTunes Top Songs chart in the United States, standing out as the top-selling track in the country on what is usually considered the most important platform for song purchases. As of the time of writing, however, it has been pushed to the runner-up spot. "Momma Song" steps aside to allow "The Perfect Fan (Demo)" by the Backstreet Boys to lead the iTunes Top Songs ranking in America. That tune came with little warning and shot right to the summit once fans woke up and realized it was available. With it, the group's album Millennium also soars on the iTunes Top Albums list. It currently appears at No. 2, despite the fact that it was originally released decades ago. The arrival of "Momma Song" is having a positive impact on the previous two American Heart singles on iTunes. The first track from the full-length, "Sorry I'm Here for Someone Else," climbs by double-digit spaces and currently appears at No. 61. "Mystical Magical," the latest tune shared – until today – is still present inside the top 40, and at the moment lifts to No. 33. Of course, when it comes to Boone's catalog, one tune stands out above the rest. "Beautiful Things," which helped introduce him to the public more than a year ago, is still a strong seller. The tune returns to the top 20 on the iTunes Top Songs tally, pushing to No. 18.
