Saharan Dust moves into Florida as National Hurricane Center tracks 3 tropical waves
Saharan Dust over portions of Florida is keeping skies hazy. It's also helping inhibit the development of any tropical systems.
The Atlantic is likely to remain quiet through the end of June, despite some early hints at tropical formation, according to AccuWeather.

Reduced air quality and rain chances are in the forecast today, June 13, as a plume of Saharan Dust remains above South Florida, according to the National Weather Service Miami. Dust, along with wind shear, help suppress tropical development but also brings hazy skies and colorful sunrises and sunsets.
The first named storm in the Atlantic basin will be Andrea.
Here's the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center as of 2 a.m. Friday, June 13:
The National Hurricane Center is monitoring three tropical waves in the Atlantic:
Tropical wave 1: An eastern Atlantic tropical wave is near 32W from 15N southward, and moving westward around 11 mph.
Tropical wave 2: A tropical North Atlantic tropical wave is over the eastern Caribbean Islands at 61.5W from 18N southward, and moving westward at 11 to 17 mph.
Tropical wave 3: A southwestern Caribbean tropical wave is near 80W from SW of Jamaica southward across western Panama, and moving westward at around 11 to 17 mph.
"The average first named storm in the Atlantic is June 20, but development over the central and eastern basin looks unfavorable through June at this time," said AccuWeather lead hurricane forecaster Alex DaSilva.
"We still expect the Central American gyre to form later this month, and its formation could spur tropical development in waters in the western Caribbean or southwestern Gulf."
Now is the time to prepare for a hurricane, before a storm is approaching.
Saharan dust is expected to help keep the tropics quiet into the week of June 16, according to AccuWeather.
Frequent pockets of dust are moving across the Atlantic from Africa, where they'll affect Florida as they move into the Gulf.
A plume of Saharan Dust is expected to arrive in South Florida starting Friday, June 13, according to the National Weather Service Miami. The arrival of the dust should decrease rain chances starting Friday.
The National Hurricane Center is tracking two disturbances in the eastern Pacific, including one expected to become the next named storm later today, June 13.
is located west of southwestern Mexico. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph, with higher gusts. Strengthening is expected and the system is forecast to become a tropical storm later today and continue strengthening Saturday as it moves parallel to the coast of southwestern Mexico.
Impacts to land are expected to be 2-4 inches of rain, with localized amounts of 6 inches across the Mexican states of Guerrero, Michoacán, and Colima through the weekend.
The next named storm to form in the eastern Pacific, which has its own list of storms separate from the Atlantic basin, will be Dalila.
Also in the eastern Pacific, an area of low pressure is expected to develop late this weekend or early next week near the coast of Central America. Environmental conditions appear conducive for some gradual development.
Historically, tropical cyclones form close to the U.S. in June, with the most common locations being the northwestern Caribbean and the eastern Gulf, according to Dr. Ryan Truchelut, chief meteorologist with WeatherTiger. Truchelut is a Florida meteorologist who works with the USA TODAY Network.
"None of the reputable forecast models are showing a realistic chance of anything tropical forming on the Atlantic side of Central America through mid-month."

The exception is the GFS model, which is predicting a Caribbean tropical storm will spin up in 10 to 12 days, then move generally northward, Truchelut said.
"The GFS has a persistent and well-known bias for incorrectly predicting development in the Caribbean at this specific time of year," Truchelut said. "All told, while something could eventually spin up in two or three weeks, the GFS' frequent false alarms should be disregarded."
A "ghost hurricane" is a term used to describe a tropical storm or hurricane that appears in a forecast model but which doesn't happen in reality, according to CNN.
Pensacola, western Panhandle: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 79.
Tallahassee, central Panhandle: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 1 p.m. It'll be mostly sunny, with a high near 90. Heat index values as high as 100.
Jacksonville, North/Northeast Florida: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 3 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 91. Heat index values as high as 100.
Daytona Beach to Stuart, East/Central Florida: Best chances for showers and storms today are across the interior west of I-95. Highs reaching the upper 80s to low 90s, with peak heat indices 100 to 103.
West Palm Beach to Naples, South/Southwest Florida: Reduced air quality and rain chances are in the forecast today as a plume of Saharan Dust remains above South Florida
Fort Myers to Sarasota, West/Southwest Florida: There's a chance for showers today, with a high near 88 and heat index as high as 102.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30.
Ninety-seven percent of tropical cyclone activity occurs during this time period, NOAA said.
The Atlantic basin includes the northern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of America, as the Gulf of Mexico is now known in the U.S. per an order from President Trump. NOAA and the National Hurricane Center are now using Gulf of America on its maps and in its advisories.
The peak of the season is Sept. 10, with the most activity happening between mid-August and mid-October, according to the Hurricane Center.

Tropical cyclone is the generic term used by the National Weather Service, NOAA and the National Hurricane Center for any tropical system, even if it's in the tropical Atlantic basin.
To be more precise, a tropical cyclone is a "rotating, organized system of clouds and thunderstorms that originates over tropical or subtropical waters and has closed, low-level circulation," NOAA said.
Once maximum sustained winds reach 74 mph, what it is called is determined by where it originated:
: for storms in the North Atlantic, central North Pacific, and eastern North Pacific.
: for storms in the Northwest Pacific.
: for storms in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean.

Deadly severe weather outbreak heading east could cause 'ring of fire'
Forecasters warn the storm system is making its way eastward. Thunderstorms expected on the edges of a dome of hot air will have a "ring of fire" effect, according to AccuWeather. At least three people are dead in North Dakota after a round of severe weather that included multiple tornado reports, as forecasters warn the storm system is making its way eastward across parts of the Midwest and Northeast. The three people were killed on June 20 in rural Enderlin, North Dakota, in the southeastern part of the state, according the Cass County Sheriff's Office. Deputies responded to reports of tornado damage at a home there at about 11:40 p.m., and when they arrived, the fire department told them that storm chasers had located two of the victims. A third person was found dead at another location, the sheriff's office said. The severe storms swept through parts of the Dakotas and Minnesota on June 20, with high winds, hail and multiple reported tornadoes. The National Weather Service in Bismarck, North Dakota, said a wind gust of 101 mph was recorded at the North Dakota Agricultural Weather Network station northwest of Linton. Tornadoes caused damage to homes and hail was measured at over 3.5 inches in diameter, preliminary reports to the Storm Prediction Center said. Wind gusts downed trees and power lines, the reports said. More than 75,000 people were without power across North Dakota and Minnesota the morning of June 21, according to USA TODAY's power outage tracker. Severe weather to move east over the weekend The same complex of storms that originated in North Dakota is expected to move eastward through the Great Lakes region during the day on June 21 and into New York and New England by night, the National Weather Service said. The storms could bring localized flash flooding, strong wind gusts and hail. The storms come as much of the nation is undergoing a "significant and extremely dangerous heat wave" into next week, according to the weather service. Groups of thunderstorms expected to form on the edges of the dome of hot air will have a "ring of fire" effect, according to AccuWeather. Thunderstorms tend to erupt on the edges of a heat dome because high pressure is weakest in these areas, the outlet reported. The storm system could evolve into a derecho, a damaging wind event that spans hundreds of miles, AccuWeather reported. A derecho is also known as an "inland hurricane." Millions of Americans are under extreme heat warnings on Friday, June 20, as sweltering temperatures are expected to reach the triple digits in some areas. The National Weather Service (NWS) stated that heat could reach "dangerous levels" over much of the central and eastern United States, beginning on June 20 and continuing into the weekend. Temperatures are likely to be hottest between the weekend and early next week, but there will still be a risk for extreme heat in the Mid-Atlantic at the end of next week, the agency said. According to AccuWeather, up to 170 million people across the country are expected to experience temperatures at or above 90 degrees during the heat wave. Here is a look at which areas will be hit the hardest. According to NWS data, the central U.S. is expected to endure the hottest temperatures on Friday, June 20, and Saturday, June 21. On Friday, major heat-related impacts are expected in most of Nebraska, Kansas and parts of Colorado, South Dakota and Iowa. Pockets of surrounding states, such as Minnesota, Oklahoma and Louisiana, will also get the worst of the extreme heat. By Saturday, major heat will expand across the Midwest, and extreme heat impacts will begin in parts of Nebraska, where temperatures could reach triple digits. Extreme levels are defined as rare or long-duration heat with little to no overnight relief, according to the NWS. Heatwave incoming: How high will temps go and when will it end?
Just in time for summer, here comes the heat. "A dangerous, widespread heat wave will bake the central and eastern U.S., bringing the hottest temperatures of the year and uncomfortably muggy air to the Midwest and Northeast that in some areas could last into much of next week," meteorologist Jonathan Erdman said in an online forecast June 20. AccuWeather estimates that 170 million people will experience temperatures at or above 90 degrees during the building heat wave into next week. "The magnitude and longevity of this heat wave will be a shock to the system," AccuWeather senior meteorologist Chad Merrill said. Heat alerts from the National Weather Service were in place June 20 across large swaths of the central and eastern U.S. Following a broiling Friday June 20, in the Plains, the heat will expand over the weekend across portions of the Midwest and Great Lakes. By Saturday June 21, major heat will expand across the Midwest, and extreme heat impacts will begin in parts of Nebraska, where temperatures could reach triple digits. Extreme levels are defined as rare or long-duration heat with little to no overnight relief, according to the weather service. The heat is then expected to shift and persist across the Ohio Valley, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic later in the weekend through next week. AccuWeather said the heat wave will continue to progress eastward, focusing on the Great Lakes, the central Appalachians, the mid-Atlantic and New England. Daily high temperatures are forecast to be well into the 90s, with overnight temperatures dropping only into the mid-70s from the Great Lakes to the East Coast. That will offer little to no relief to those without adequate or reliable cooling, the Weather Prediction Center said. "The first significant heat wave of the year can pose more danger," the center said. As the heat builds, people should limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated and ensure access to air conditioning and other cooling areas. "Heat exhaustion and heatstroke can strike even physically fit individuals in the prime of their lives," Alex Sosnowski said. The heat wave will be triggered by a change in the jet stream pattern, Erdman said in an online forecast. "Specifically a strong bubble of high pressure aloft known as a heat dome will develop over the eastern U.S. Sinking air near the center of this heat dome suppresses clouds, allowing the intense sunshine this time of year to heat the ground and air above it," Erdman said. Southerly and southwesterly winds will also draw hot and humid air from the South into the Midwest and Northeast, he said. Meanwhile, in a testament to the vast size of the U.S., snow and cold will be the story in Montana. Some portions of Glacier National Park could see as much as two feet of snow, the weather service said. The weather service warned of "considerable disruptions to normal activities" and "dangerous or impossible conditions. Avoid travel in the impacted areas if possible."
