Fishermen demand early renovation of Mandapam North jetty
As the concrete bollards used for tying boats at Mandapam North fishing jetty were damaged, exposing rusted iron rods, fishermen fear that they would be injured while working at late hours with limited light.
The jetty, which handles more than 300 trawlers and 100 country boats, was built about 20 years ago.
Since the bollards would be subjected to rough handling when trawlers were tied to them, they got damaged gradually, said M. Jahir Husain, president of Traditional Fishermen Association.
As the bollards were also regularly exposed to seawater and salty wind, the concrete materials withered away quickly, he said.
Now, instead of renovating them by just applying concrete paste, the whole structures should be rebuilt, Mr. Jahir Husain suggested.
He said only recently the jetty in Mandapam South was given a facelift with the renovation work.
Further, he demanded construction of a breakwater in the Mandapam North area to reduce the force of waves hitting the coast.
'During October, November and December, when the wind velocity is very high, boats anchored in the sea will be loosened and will crash on the shore,' he added.
Due to the wind force, more than 10 boats were damaged in the last year itself, he noted.
'Even minor damage to the boat would cost lakhs of rupees for repair,' he stated.
Mr. Jahir Husain said representing the association he submitted a petition to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on April 8, demanding allocation of funds for the construction of a breakwater.
'While ₹360 crore was allocated for construction of breakwaters in Kunthukal, Pamban and Thangachimadam, we are yet to get any fund allocation,' he said.
A Fisheries Department official said in the Tamil Nadu Budget 2023-24, ₹25 crore was allocated for construction of breakwater, but since the Government Order was not issued and the funds were not released the works were getting delayed.
Regarding the reconstruction of the bollards at the jetty, he said they had informed the Fishing Harbour Wing to prepare an estimate for the renovation work.

District-based panels to oversee management and scientific disposal of plastic water bottles
An order has been issued empowering the District Commissioners (DC) of each district in the State to chair a committee which will oversee the management and scientific disposal of plastic water bottles. The Government Order was officially unveiled at the World Environment Day programme on Tuesday by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Each committee, headed by the DC, comprises the Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Panchayat, District Superintendent of Police, Deputy Director of the Food and Civil Supplies Department, and Pollution Control Board officers. These committees will monitor waste management by giving special attention to the scientific disposal of water bottles and compile data on the quantity of PET bottles produced, used and sold within the district. After major facelift, Valluvar Kottam, a landmark of Chennai, is ready for inauguration
Valluvar Kottam, one of the city's landmarks, is ready for inauguration after renovations. The venue is likely to host its first function since the facelift on June 21, and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is expected to participate in it. The Public Works Department (PWD) has completed the ₹80-crore project to renovate the city's iconic monument, which is spread over 5 acres. People who pass by the edifice may get a glimpse of the stone chariot lit up during the evening hours. Besides structural retrofitting of the monument that was constructed between 1974 and 1976, the PWD has built various facilities to attract visitors to the facility dedicated to Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar. The monument has undergone elaborate Stapathi works to beautify its entrances, and visitors will be treated to a 10-minute 'light and sound show' at the stone chariot and a musical fountain at the entrance. The modernised edifice will also have intricate artworks on its columns and facade. Officials said the recreational facilities were being tested before the inauguration. Some of the new facilities include a cafeteria and a multi-level parking area, which can accommodate 164 vehicles. The ground floor will have an air-conditioned auditorium with a seating capacity of about 1,500 people and another modernised library and research hall, which can accommodate 100 people. The Kural Manimadam on the first floor, which will have the 1,330 Thirukkural verses on display along with commentary by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and relevant paintings, has also been spruced up. The terrace leading to the 106-ft chariot has been redesigned with ornamental pillars and a covered pathway. Elevators and ramps have also been installed for better accessibility, officials added.
