Kolkata: Former ISRO chief
will be the chief guest at the IIT-Kharagpur convocation, scheduled to be held on July 15. Under his leadership, India became the first country to reach Mars its maiden attempt.

The name of the chief guest was confirmed by IIT-Kharagpur acting director, Amit Patra. "We have decided to conduct the convocation in July to help students attend the programme. Besides, several other people would also be able to join the programme around this time. Previously, this used to be the usual time for hosting the
. The date got shifted during the pandemic," Patra added.
"At the senate meeting in Dec last year, the members agreed to hold the event in July as the new graduates would not have joined their jobs by this time of the year. So, they can easily attend the ceremony. Many students find it difficult to attend the convocation in Dec as it is difficult to seek leave from work."
TOI on May 4 reported that IIT-Kharagpur decided to shift its convocation to July on students' requests.

HAL to build small satellite launch vehicles
NSIL to launch 15 private payload SSLVs starting from October BENGALURU: New Space India Limited (NSIL) will launch its first small satellite launch vehicles (SSLV) in partnership with private firms in October 2025 and February 2026. After which 15 more will be launched subsequently. Radhakrishnan Durairaj, CMD, NSIL, on Friday said these skilled launches are based on the business in hand and demand. Earlier India did not have the space and technology to launch the SSLVs and it had to be done from the launch pads of other countries, but now after the creation of the SSLV Module in LEO Experiment (SMILE) platform developed by ISRO and Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), the launches can be done unhindered. The SMILE platform, inspired from the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module, is a cost-effective platform for space technologies. Durairaj said they were aiming to the launch the 15 satellites will not overlap with the ongoing works that are being done with ISRO and HAL. These works had commenced before entering into agreements with HAL. He added that the space sector and technologies have changed with satellites getting miniaturised and more constellations are coming up. India is now making its presence more prominent in the space sector.

Think beyond computer science engineering: IIT panel
CHENNAI: Students and their parents should get rid of the herd mentality of choosing computer science engineering courses over other streams, said directors of five IITs at a panel discussion organised on the IIT Madras campus here on Friday. Speaking at the discussion organised under the banner of PanIIT Alumni Leadership Series (PALS), a voluntary initiative by IIT alumni, on the topic 'Engineering education for a new era', V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras, said toppers should be encouraged to opt for disciplines other than computer sciences, since the country needs bright minds in other disciplines too. Stating that the country needs administrators who are tech savvy policy makers, he said engineering graduates should also take up civil service. KN Satyanarayana, director, IIT Tirupati stressed the country needs more engineers in the core fields at present. 'There is a big vacuum in the battery, semiconductor sectors which are the sunrise sectors. A chemical engineer, or a material scientist is the need of the hour,' said Satyanarayana. Shreepad Karmalkar, director, IIT Bhubaneswar said many students opt for computer science over core engineering courses due to the parity in pay packages at entry levels. 'This herd mentality needs to be get rid of,' he added. BS Murty, director, IIT Hyderabad appealed to the youth to put the country first over their personal aspirations. Venkappayya R Desai, director, IIT Dharwad urged students to use their creativity in making society a better place to live in. The panelists also shared their vision on how engineering education must evolve to meet the demands of the 21st century, stressing the need for interdisciplinary learning, integration of emerging technologies like AI and sustainability, academia-industry collaborations, and improving access and inclusivity for students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, CN Chandrasekaran, chairperson of PALS, also spoke.

Axiom-4 put off again, ISRO decides to recall Group Captains Shukla, Nair
BENGALURU: Two days before the scheduled launch of the much-awaited Axiom-4 (Ax-4) Space Mission on June 22, Axiom Space on Friday announced its indefinite postponement. Axiom Space, which is spearheading the 14-day Ax-4 Space Mission to the International Space Station (ISS) with four astronauts from the US, India, Poland and Hungary, has not given the next launch date. Following this, the Indian Space Research Organisation decided to recall Ax-4 mission pilot Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla and reserve crew member Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair. 'NASA has made the decision to stand down from a launch on Sunday, June 22, and will target a new launch date in the coming days. The space agency (NASA) needs additional time to continue evaluating International Space Station operations after recent repair work in the aft (back) most segment of the orbital laboratory's Zvezda service module. Because of the space station's interconnected and interdependent systems, NASA wants to ensure the station is ready for additional crew members, and the agency is taking the time necessary to review the data,' an Axiom Space statement read. The $64 million space mission is a multi-agency collaboration, involving Axiom Space, ISRO, NASA and European Space Agency (ESA). 'The (Indian) astronauts will be returning. There are many technical issues that need to be addressed before the mission is launched,' said a senior ISRO scientist. Shukla and Nair are among the four Indian astronauts selected for India's first manned space mission, Gaganyaan, scheduled to be launched some time in 2027. ISRO Chairman V Narayanan said the Ax-4 mission delays will have no impact on the Gaganyaan mission, which, he said, is progressing as per schedule.
