IIT-Kgp, JU better global ranks, CU sees slight dip

Kolkata: IIT-Kharagpur, Jadavpur University and Calcutta University are the only three institutes from Bengal that have made it to QS World Ranking 2026. While IIT-Kharagpur and JU improved their rank, CU's position saw a dip. The list this year features 54 institutes from the country. The QS World University Rankings, published annually by the London-based global higher education analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds, assess universities based on performance indicators, like academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, research impact, international student diversity, graduate employability. IIT-Kharagpur has climbed seven spots from 222nd rank last year to 215th. It also ranked 4th among the IITs. The new IIT Kharagpur director, Suman Chakraborty, said, "We have performed better than last year but our rank can improve if we can create a positive impression on the outer world as perception plays an important role." The outgoing acting director, Amit Patra, said, "Our performance in citations per faculty, international research network and sustainability, helped us better our position. " At 676, JU's rank improved significantly from last year's position between 721 and 730. "As a state-run institute, we have constraints, including funds crunch. Still, JU has been performing well. The credit goes to our teachers', researchers' and students' dedication. Improvement in areas, like faculty-student ratio, international student diversity and international student ratio, could have advanced our rank, but they do not depend entirely on the university," said an official. CU's rank dropped to a place between 771 and 780 from last year's 751 to 760. CU acting VC Santa Datta said, "The rank has slightly dipped but it's a proud moment that we are still among institutes on the world ranking list. With limited resources, my aim is to develop the university holistically, focusing on research and international network."

Govt nod awaited to hold 1st Happiness Survey in MP

Bhopal: After being on hold for eight years, the happiness department sought the nod of the state govt to carry out the happiness survey. Eight years ago, in May 2017, the govt decided to measure the well-being of the people in the state by conducting a happiness survey. It was to be conducted by the happiness department, the first such department in the country. The govt signed an MoU with IIT-Kharagpur for the development of a happiness index to measure the well-being of people. The questionnaire for the survey was ready, but it was deferred for different reasons, including assembly and general elections. The happiness department said it is ready, and once the nod of the govt comes, the process to carry out the survey would be conducted. Over 80 experts from different parts of the globe brainstormed in Bhopal, but the survey could not take off. Officials of the happiness department informed that they can conduct the survey in two months' time after getting the go-ahead from the govt. A short training would be held for surveyors, and they would be sent to the district to carry out the survey. Officials said, as per the initial plan, 10,000 people would be surveyed in all districts of MP. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The questionnaire for the survey was finalised. In every district, around 200 people were to be surveyed, officials added. The govt and experts of IIT-Kharagpur had shortlisted 30 questions, which would be asked to people during the happiness survey. People of MP had to rate their happiness on different parameters that include education, their social and economic conditions, and experience in govt offices and schemes on a scale of 1 to 10. The online data collected was to be shared with IIT-Kharagpur, and based on it, the happiness of the people of MP was to be rated. The exercise remains on hold for years now. MP hit national headlines in July 2016 when it became the first state to set up a happiness department. The happiness survey to measure people's happiness was planned in 2017, but the survey remains on hold. It was also not that the happiness department has been ignored by the new BJP govt. On August 23 last year, chief minister Mohan Yadav reviewed the happiness department. CM Yadav proposed that every district should have a dedicated centre or building for ideological and creative activities, with the involvement of related departments. He stated that the lives of citizens should be both materially prosperous and joyful, noting that a peaceful individual contributes to the development of a happy and prosperous society. Officials said CM Mohan Yadav has also given instructions for the training of thousands of govt employees to be part of Ujjain Simhastha 2028 management. The happiness department officials said training of employees as part of Ujjain Simhastha was to teach them how to be helpful and kind during long hours of stressful duty during Simhastha. IIT-Kharagpur team wins national ideathon under ‘save water' category

Kharagpur: Out of 21 innovative solutions chosen from 1,384 entries received from across India, a sustainable waste management solution proposed by a IIT-Kharagpur team has bagged the first prize at a national ideathon, 'Ideas4LiFE', under the 'save water' category. The IIT-Kharagpur team proposed the concept of reducing water footprint using moisture from raw sewage during treatment of waste and converting the same into bio-carbon materials used for various purposes. The bio-carbon materials are used for energy storage, environmental remediation and industrial processes. 'Ideas4LiFE' is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC) in collaboration with UNICEF YuWaah, launched under the framework of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). The team comprises Rajarshi Bhar, Joydeepa Taran, and Anil. The teammates were guided by Civil Engineering Department professor Brajesh Kumar Dubey. The idea has been titled as "Reducing Water Footprint Using Raw Sewage during Hydrothermal Carbonization." The project proposes an innovative solution to use raw municipal sewage as a moisture source during the production of lignocellulosic hydrochar, effectively reducing the dependence on freshwater. This approach not only advances water conservation efforts but also integrates waste management with renewable energy production, making it a scalable and sustainable intervention, the team claimed. The 'Ideas4LiFE' platform was launched on July 29, 2024, at IIT competition followed a rigorous three-phase selection process, including evaluation by experts from the Department of Higher Education and a national jury.
