In a big relief to Wikimedia Foundation , the Supreme Court on Friday set aside the Delhi High Court 's earlier order that had directed the platform to delete allegedly defamatory content related to Asian News International (ANI) from its page.Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, delivering the Supreme Court's judgment, reiterated the principle laid down in the Sahara India case, affirming that courts do have the power to postpone the reporting of judicial proceedings—but only when there is a real and substantial risk to the fairness of a trial. The judgment noted that while courts must remain open to debate and constructive criticism, including discussions on sub judice matters, judges themselves cannot respond publicly. However, if a publication scandalises the court, appropriate action may be taken. Crucially, the court stated it is not the judiciary's role to direct media outlets to remove posts.Earlier, a division bench of the Delhi HC had refused to stay a single-judge order directing Wikipedia to remove certain descriptions of ANI. The bench—comprising Justices Pratibha Singh and Rajneesh Kumar Gupta—had ruled that Wikipedia and its host, the Wikimedia Foundation, are subject to the Information Technology ( Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. The court held that if defamatory content was not removed within 36 hours, ANI could approach the court for further relief. The bench also clarified that as an intermediary, Wikipedia cannot contest a takedown directive on merits. 'If you claim to be an intermediary, your job is to comply with court orders. You cannot argue the content's merit,' the bench remarked. However, the court stayed parts of the single-judge's order that had directed Wikipedia to remove the 'protection status' of ANI's page and barred users from posting defamatory content. Protection status on Wikipedia limits editing access to administrators only.Justice Singh stated that if similar content appears again, ANI could inform Wikipedia, which would be expected to act accordingly.Earlier, on April 2, Justice Subramonium Prasad had passed an interim order directing the removal of allegedly defamatory descriptions from ANI's Wikipedia page. The order came in response to a defamation suit filed by ANI against Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation, seeking the removal of the content and damages amounting to Rs 2 crore.ANI alleged that Wikipedia had published false and defamatory content with malicious intent, damaging the agency's reputation. The Wikipedia page reportedly described ANI as a 'propaganda tool' and 'mouthpiece' for the government and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Himachal's sex ratio records improvement, touches 964 in 2024

The Himachal Pradesh government said on Sunday that the state saw a significant improvement in the sex ratio -- a rise from 947 in 2023 to 964 in 2024. It attributed the improvement in gender equality to a growing societal shift towards valuing the girl child, reinforced by various schemes launched to support their well-being. The sex ratio is the measure of the number of females per 1,000 males in a given population. It serves as a crucial yardstick to measure gender equality. The state government said that the financial support for the marriage of girls from economically weaker sections continues to be a key focus area. Under the Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana, Rs 1,989.31 lakh has been provided as to help 3,956 girls at the time of their marriage. Likewise, the Mukhyamantri Shagun Yojana has extended support to 12,192 girls, with financial assistance of Rs 3,779.52 lakh as 'shagun'. These initiatives reflect the state's commitment to ensuring dignity and support for young women as they enter a new phase of life, an official statement said. Recognising the right of widows to remarry and lead a respectful life, the government has also extended financial assistance through the Widow Remarriage Scheme. Under this scheme, 239 women have been supported with an assistance of Rs 291.15 lakh, encouraging their reintegration into society with dignity and support. The welfare of orphan children has been given special attention under the Mukhyamantri Sukh Aashray Yojana, through which Rs 25.98 crore has been provided to support their overall well-being. For educational support, 9,859 children have received Rs 302.18 lakh under the scheme, helping them to grow and learn in a secure and nurturing environment. Besides, the state government took a historic step by passing the Himachal Pradesh Ceiling Land Holdings (Amendment) Bill of 1972. This step is helping promoting gender equality and empowering women. It addresses long-standing inequalities in property rights and shows the commitment towards social justice for women, the state government said. The initiative reflects the vision of the Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and is a bold step towards giving women greater financial independence and social empowerment across the state. Apart from this, the state government has also started the Indira Gandhi Sukh Suraksha Yojana, under which it will deposit Rs 25,000 with an insurance company for each of the first two daughters born in a below poverty line (BPL) family. The parents of the girl will receive a life insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh each. The deposited amount will be handed over to the girl when she turns 18 or any time before she reaches the age of 27. To support working women, the state government plans to build 13 working women hostels across key locations like Solan, Baddi, Palampur and Gagret, and the Medical Device Park in Solan. These hostels, to be constructed in this fiscal at a cost of Rs 132 crore, will provide safe, affordable and convenient accommodation for employed women, enabling their economic independence.

Asaduddin Owaisi mocks Pakistan over US strikes on Iran: ‘Should Donald Trump win Nobel for this?'

As the United States struck three Iranian nuclear facilities overnight under what it called 'Operation Midnight Hammer', AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi asked Pakistan whether Donald Trump should win a Nobel Peace Prize for this. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also mocked Pakistani Army chief Asim Munir for having lunch with US President Donald Trump. (ANI) Owaisi also lambasted Washington and said that it was "never an honest broker". Follow Iran Israel war live updates The AIMIM chief's remarks come against the backdrop of the recent American strikes on Iranian nuclear sites as well as Pakistan's move to nominate the US President for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Pakistan had nominated Trump for the Nobel Prize, citing his "diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership" during the recent India-Pakistan conflict. "The US was never an honest broker. Whether it is Iraq, Libya or Palestine. The US is sitting completely silent on the ethnic cleansing taking place in Gaza," Owaisi told news agency ANI. He added that Washington's policy is to only "cover up the crimes of the Israeli government". Owaisi asked why "no one is talking about a genocide" that is happening in Gaza. You removed Gaddafi in Libya, and nothing happened. Saddam was killed, and Gaddafi was killed. The US policy is only to cover up the crimes of the Israeli government. What is happening in Gaza? A genocide is happening, and no one is talking about it," the Lok Sabha MP said. Further, he questioned Pakistan's support for Trump and asked if they backed him only to see the strikes on Iran. "We should ask Pakistanis if they want Trump to get a Nobel Peace Prize..." Owaisi said, referring to the US strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan. ALSO READ | Iran President says US entered conflict after witnessing 'Israel's impotence' He also mocked Pakistan's top military leadership and asked whether Islamabad's Army chief, Asim Munir, had lunch with the US President for this (US strikes on Iran)? "They all have been exposed today," Owaisi added. The AIMIM chief further slammed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling him a "butcher of Palestinians". "A genocide is happening in Gaza, and the US is not worried about it. This man (Netanyahu), he has butchered Palestinians... He is doing ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. History will remember him as the butcher of Palestinians," he added. Owaisi also raised concerns over the chances of serious consequences for India if a full-scale war breaks out in the Middle East region. He cited that over 16 million Indians reside in the Gulf and the Middle East, saying that "if that area erupts in a war, which unfortunately is very likely, then it will have a grave impact on the Indians living there". US President Donald Trump, early on Sunday, announced that Washington carried out strikes on Iran's three nuclear facilities. Following this, he urged Iran to agree to end the war with Israel. Later, Trump also warned Iran that any retaliation from Tehran against the US "will be met with force far greater than what was witnessed" on Sunday.
