John Ivison: On campaign's final weekend, the Grits have the momentum
KING CITY, ONT. – With two days to go until polling day, Mark Carney was careful not to break into a victory lap.
At a campaign event at Seneca College in this commuter community 40 km north of Toronto, Carney was asked to grade his own campaign performance.
The problem with being successful is that it breeds hubris, a quality voters tend to find toxic.
But the Liberal leader is a quick study and sidestepped a curve-ball that could have struck him squarely between the eyes. 'Every study I've ever taken, it is the teacher who gives the grades,' he said.
It was a prudent response. The polls give the Liberals a four-point cushion nationally, with regional break-outs in Ontario and Quebec looking even more rosy. Carney consistently outpolls Pierre Poilievre on perceived competence and likeability.
The race does not always go to the candidate ahead in the polls, but that's the way to bet. Betting markets give the Liberals a 71 percent chance of forming government, compared to a 20 percent chance for the Conservatives. A certain Donald Trump faced similar odds in 2016 and triumphed.
But the momentum is with the Liberals. You can see it and feel it on the ground. On Friday night, Carney campaigned in an NDP-held riding, London—Fanshawe, that has been held by the mother-daughter dynasty of Lindsay and Irene Mathyssen since 2006.
On Saturday evening, Carney is scheduled to hold a rally in Windsor West. The seat is held by veteran NDP MP, Brian Masse, who has won there eight times.
It is a measure of the rise in Liberal fortunes, at the expense of the NDP, that Masse's seat is now considered to be in play.
There is no sentiment in politics, and in return for propping up the government for the past two years, the Liberals are intent on wiping New Democrats from the electoral map.
The King—Vaughan seat is currently held by the Conservatives, but it too is considered a potential pick-up for the Liberals.
The reason is the story of this election: Carney has been the candidate who has best addressed the anxieties about the Trump administration felt by millions of Canadians.
He has talked about 'the biggest crisis of our lifetimes' and the rhetoric has felt overblown at times, particularly in the weeks between Trump bloviating about Canada becoming the '51st state.'
But the president has entered the stage again, as if on cue from the Liberal campaign.
In an interview with Time magazine, he said he is not trolling when he says he wanted to grow the American empire to include Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal.
'I say the only way this works is for Canada to become a state,' he told the magazine.
Carney referred to the comments in his remarks. 'I take it literally,' he said. 'Others ignored it and said it's a joke. But I took it seriously.'
He said Trump's efforts to reshape the global trading system 'demonstrates the costs and consequences of our democratic choices.'
The line of questioning from reporters focused on how Carney would deal with Trump's threats, if elected.
He was asked if he is setting unrealistic expectations by saying Canada can win a trade war.
He said the country loses any negotiations if it gives the Americans what they want. 'We will be damaged if we lose access to the (U.S.) market,' he said. But building a single Canadian economy and exploiting trading opportunities elsewhere would give Canada leverage. 'That's winning the trade war,' he said.
He said he does not believe the U.S. would ever resort to military force. 'But I do think the U.S. is trying to put economic pressure on us to gain major concessions … a level of integration of our countries that would impinge on our sovereignty,' he said.
'We have to be clear-eyed about this. These aren't just words when I say in a crisis we have to prepare for the worst. And the worst is, that is the goal. Take what the president says literally.'
Carney said he sees 'a landing place' of a negotiated settlement but did not expand on what that might look like.
Earlier this month in Oakville, Ont., he was asked whether Trump is likely to abide by any deal that is reached.
He said negotiations would have to focus on sectors where the fundamental economic interests are so tightly bound that the incentives to reach agreement are present.
'I look specifically at the auto sector, where it is going to become very apparent very quickly that taking apart something that has been built up over my lifetime is not in the interests of U.S. jobs,' he said.
In large measure, the election appears to have come down to voters answering the question Carney posed in his remarks in King City: 'Is Pierre Poilievre the person you want sitting around the table with President Trump?'
It will be a stunning reversal for the pollsters and the pundits if the answer on Monday is 'yes.'

Trump Botches His Own Name In The Most Awkward Typo You'll Ever See
President Donald Trump on Sunday posted a message on his Truth Social website thanking the B-2 pilots who took part in this weekend's attack on Iran. But the president's message had one key flaw: He misspelled his own name. 'The GREAT B-2 pilots have just landed, safely, in Missouri. Thank you for a job well done!!!' Trump wrote, then signed his message in all caps: 'DONAKD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!' Trump deleted the message and replaced it with a corrected version, but a website that archives his posts shows the typo. Trump has a long and colorful history of typo-ridden social media posts, including the infamous 'covfefe' message of 2017, along with his references to a 'stollen' election, 'Wirch Hunt,' and 'hamberders.' He's bungled his own name before, referring to himself in 2019 as 'Donald Ttump,' and that of his wife, whom he called 'Melanie' Trump in 2018. It's not clear if Trump typed the message himself. A former aide, Madeleine Westerhout, testified during his criminal trial last year that when Trump was on Twitter, he preferred to dictate his messages, down to his trademark use of capitalizations and exclamation points. Footage released last year also showed him dictating and supervising his social media posts. Trump's critics called him out over the awkward typo:

The Disrespect: Trump Disregards Juneteenth, Says US Has ‘Too Many Non-Working Holidays'
Source: MANDEL NGAN / Getty Black MAGA, y'all alright? Donald Trump has once again shown us who he is, the most un-American, unproductive, and unapologetically divisive figure ever elected to the highest office in the land, who has the audacity to complain about 'non-working' holidays—namely, Juneteenth. On Thursday (Jun 19), as Black Americans celebrated Juneteenth, commemorating the end of chattel slavery in the United States, Trump didn't issue a statement, attend an event, or offer even a hollow gesture of recognition. Instead, he took to his communication platform, Truth Social, to complain that America has 'too many non-working holidays,' intentionally ignoring one of the most historically significant dates for our community. 'Too many non-working holidays in America. It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed,' Trump said Thursday on Truth Social without explicitly mentioning Juneteenth. Allow me to say the quiet part out loud: This wasn't an oversight; it was an intentional and calculated decision to disrespect. While Trump spent the holiday doing nothing, former President Joe Biden spent the day honoring Juneteenth at the exact site where Union soldiers arrived in 1865 to inform more than 250,000 enslaved people of their freedom, Reedy Chapel AME Church in Galveston, Texas. It's a stark contrast moment that shows the difference between honoring American history and actively trying to erase it. According to the White House, Trump had initially planned to sign a proclamation recognizing Juneteenth, but that plan was quietly scrapped without explanation after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed the administration was 'working 24/7' before dismissing the need for a Juneteenth proclamation altogether. 'I'm not tracking his signature on a proclamation today,' she said. 'I know this is a federal holiday.' What's more disrespectful is that this is the same administration that uses Black people as props while refusing to protect Black life or recognize Black history. Whether it's photo ops with Black pastors, staged roundtables with cherry-picked community 'leaders,' lying on us with fake stats, or parading out HUD Secretary Scott Turner for cover, Trump's playbook is always the same: surround yourself with Black faces while ignoring Black voices. And let's talk directly to the 30% of Black voters who proudly say they support Trump. This is what you're co-signing—a man who weaponizes the Black struggle when it suits his narrative and ignores it when it requires decorum. Trump claims to have 'made Juneteenth famous' in 2020, as if generations of Black Americans haven't been celebrating the day with parades, cookouts, and sacred remembrance for over a century, only to pretend a few years later that it doesn't matter—and that's the bigger issue. Trump's rejection of Juneteenth isn't just disrespectful; it's part of a much larger and more dangerous pattern by an elderly man who's waging war on DEI initiatives, rewriting curriculum to exclude critical race theory, and gutting federal protections for Black workers. And let's not forget, Trump had no problem announcing two new holidays, Victory Days for both world wars — including one that already exists as Veterans Day, but Juneteenth is suddenly too costly, because it's too Black. It's clear that Trump's disregard for Juneteenth is not about the number of holidays, but instead about denying the truth of America's past to protect the illusion of its innocence and solidifying to his base that acknowledging Black liberation is optional. Deepak Sarma, inaugural distinguished scholar in the public humanities at Case Western Reserve University, told HuffPost that Trump's reversal on Juneteenth this year shows that his political strategies embrace 'cruelty,' and that he employed a 'bait-and-switch' in an attempt to woo Black supporters; noting that Trump is 'appealing only to his MAGA constituents, many of whom were covert, and now are overt, racists,' and he has discarded the concerns of his Black supporters. 'This is consistent with his Machiavellian political philosophy, which embraces deception, cruelty, and immorality to achieve his selfish goals,' Sarma told the publication. '[Rejecting] DEI, embracing pro-life, utilizing ICE, are all ways to cater to MAGA voters.' Since the beginning of his second term, Trump has done more to dismantle Black progress than almost any president in modern history. From banning DEI programs to banning books about Black history, his record speaks louder than his silence ever could. So yes, Trump's refusal to acknowledge Juneteenth is disrespectful; it's also entirely on brand, serving as a reminder that his presidency is built on white grievance, historical revisionism, and the suppression of truth. Trump Administration Shutters Suicide Hotline For LGBTQ Youth
Source: picture alliance / Getty The 'pro-life' party is once again proving that it only cares about the lives of straight, cisgender people. Earlier this week, the Trump administration announced that it would be shuttering a line on the national suicide hotline specifically made for LGBTQ youth. According to CBS News, the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration announced that the 'press 3 option' will be removed from the national Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. 'On July 17, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline will no longer silo LGB+ youth services, also known as the 'Press 3 option,' to focus on serving all help seekers, including those previously served through the Press 3 option,' the statement released by SAMHSA reads. 'Everyone who contacts the 988 Lifeline will continue to receive access to skilled, caring, culturally competent crisis counselors who can help with suicidal, substance misuse, or mental health crises, or any other kind of emotional distress. Anyone who calls the Lifeline will continue to receive compassion and help,' the statement continued. The 'press 3 option' was created in 2022 as a pilot project in conjunction with The Trevor Project, a nonprofit focused on suicide prevention for LGBTQ youth. When the press 3 option launched in 2022, the hotline saw a 40 percent increase in calls. It's unclear if the people who worked on the specialized line would be folded into the mix of current crisis counselors or cut from the hotline outright. Jaymes Black, CEO of The Trevor Project, released a statement condemning the move by the administration. 'We received official notice that the Trump administration has ordered the closure of The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline's LGBTQ+ Youth Specialized Services program, effective July 17, 2025. This means that, in 30 short days, this program that has provided life-saving services to more than 1.3 million LGBTQ+ young people will no longer be available for those who need it,' the statement read. Source: EvgeniyShkolenko / Getty 'This is devastating, to say the least. Suicide prevention is about people, not politics. The administration's decision to remove a bipartisan, evidence-based service that has effectively supported a high-risk group of young people through their darkest moments is incomprehensible.' It shouldn't be lost on anyone that this particularly cruel move comes during Pride month, which has already been more subdued as a result of the actions by the Trump administration. The crackdown on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) has seen multiple pride events scaled down as funding usually set aside for pride has been withdrawn. The statement was also particularly gross in how it dropped the 'T' in 'LGBTQ,' which Black also noted in his statement. 'The fact that this news comes to us halfway through Pride Month is callous – as is the administration's choice to remove the 'T' from the acronym 'LGBTQ+' in their announcement. Transgender people can never, and will never, be erased' Black wrote. It's clear that the Trump administration wants LGBTQ people to die. I'm not even being hyperbolic, as the National Institutes of Health have slashed millions of dollars in funding for several grants aimed at sexual health for LGBTQ Americans. A recent court ruling blocked a Trump executive order that pulled funding from several LGBTQ non-profits, saying that the vague wording of the order infringed on their First Amendment rights. Across the board the Trump administration is doing everything it can to make life harder, and quite frankly, deadlier for queer and trans youth. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline can be reached by calling or texting 988. You can also chat with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline here . The Trevor Project's trained crisis counselors are available 24/7 at 1-866-488-7386, via chat at , or by texting START to 678678.
