The Storm hit back to take the lead through Grant Anderson, but it lasted less than a minute as the veteran winger picked off a Jahrome Hughes pass to become the first player ever to score four tries against the Storm in a game. GOLDEN MOMENT The Storm had their hearts broken in golden point at Magic Round, but they flipped the script on Saturday with Papenhuyzen nailing the moment after his first shot was charged down 30 seconds earlier. Melbourne's fullback has been ice cool in the past and was at his clinical best after he saw rival Latrell Mitchell miss his 46-metre attempt in the final seconds of regulation time. It sealed a crucial win for the Storm who move into third spot without any byes to come for the rest of the season. SUA SIZZLES Souths looked certain to steamroll the Storm in the final 20 minutes until a moment of magic from livewire winger Sua Fa'alogo saved the visitors. Melbourne got off to a flying start when skipper Harry Grant waltzed through some flimsy marker defence to open the scoring, and they doubled their advantage from the next set when Grant Anderson put in a banana kick for Jahrome Hughes. But then they fell into their old ways that have plagued them for much of the season as they produced eight first-half errors to invite Souths back into the contest. Their attack fell flat until Fa'alogo sparked them into life when he caught a towering bomb on his own 20 and broke through to set up Tyran Wishart to put Melbourne back in front. Another error from the kick-off summed up their night, with Papenhuyzen producing a magical play from a 20-metre restart to find touch, only for the full-time siren to beat them before they could pack the scrum. SOUTHS FIGHT ON The Rabbitohs could drop to second last on the ladder at the end of the round, but they lost no admirers after this one. It's been a tough run for the Bunnies against the top four teams, but they are showing plenty of fight even though Wayne Bennett suffered his 15th loss in a row against Craig Bellamy. Mitchell is the man who can save their season after he set up four tries, including a stunning grubber for Tyrone Munro to score with four minutes remaining, only for his conversion attempt to sail wide.

Four-try Johnston closes on record but Storm pip Souths
Alex Johnston is on track to break the NRL's try-scoring record this season but his four tries were not enough to prevent Ryan Papenhuyzen icing Melbourne's extra-time defeat of South Sydney. Fullback Papenhuyzen sealed the Storm's 25-24 win with his second attempt at field goal in the 84th minute, booting the ball over from 20 metres out at Accor Stadium on Saturday night. Latrell Mitchell had done his utmost to seal a Souths victory on return from State of Origin duty, including kicking to Tyrone Munro for the try that equalised the game with only four minutes to play. But he missed a potentially game-winning sideline conversion thereafter before his only field goal attempt sailed wide from 45 metres out. An error-prone Storm moved to extra time, sealing victory and jumping the Warriors into third spot on the ladder. Mitchell threw cut-out passes down the left side for Johnston's 203rd, 204th and 205th career tries. Johnston then intercepted a Jahrome Hughes pass for his fourth try of the night, moving only six behind the benchmark of 212 that Ken Irvine set in 1973. But he has since scored 11 tries in seven games this year, and with nine more to play in the regular season, is well on track to reach 213 by finals. He also became the first player to score four or more tries in a game against Melbourne since the perennially-successful Storm entered the competition in 1998. The loss is Wayne Bennett's 15th in a row against rival coach Craig Bellamy and came in the pair's record-breaking 44th time coaching against one another. Bennett has not beaten his former protege in any match since 2016, with Souths now in the midst of a four-game losing streak that ensures they will finish the weekend second-last on the ladder. The Storm scored in back-to-back sets to lead 12-0 after six minutes but Bellamy would have been furious that the Storm invited Souths back in with errors. The attacking powerhouse managed only a 68 per cent completion rate in the first half. Melbourne looked ready to break their hosts' hearts as Sua Fa'alogo fielded a Mitchell bomb on the 20-metre line to put Tyran Wishart in. The Rabbitohs equalised when Mitchell dared to kick a long grubber through the line for Munro from 30 metres out on the third tackle. But it was Papenhuyzen who had the last laugh.

All Blacks winger Sevu Reece claimed the Super Rugby Pacific career try-scoring record when he touched down for the 66th time in 14th minute of the Canterbury Crusaders' clash with the Otago Highlanders in Christchurch on Friday. The fleet-footed 28-year-old claimed the record with a far less spectacular effort than many of his previous tries for the Crusaders, dropping the ball onto the line from the base of a tryline ruck. The score took Fiji-born Reece out of share of the record with his former All Blacks team mate TJ Perenara, who moved to Japan at the end of last season and will not be able to add to his tally. Moana Pasifika winger Julian Savea (63 tries) is the only other player from the top five try-scorers still active in Super Rugby Pacific. Reece, who started his Super Rugby career at the Waikato Chiefs in 2016 and moved to Christchurch six years ago, has also scored 18 tries in 32 tests for New Zealand.
