Reece claims Super Rugby try-scoring record
All Blacks winger Sevu Reece claimed the Super Rugby Pacific career try-scoring record when he touched down for the 66th time in 14th minute of the Canterbury Crusaders' clash with the Otago Highlanders in Christchurch on Friday.
The fleet-footed 28-year-old claimed the record with a far less spectacular effort than many of his previous tries for the Crusaders, dropping the ball onto the line from the base of a tryline ruck.
The score took Fiji-born Reece out of share of the record with his former All Blacks team mate TJ Perenara, who moved to Japan at the end of last season and will not be able to add to his tally.
Moana Pasifika winger Julian Savea (63 tries) is the only other player from the top five try-scorers still active in Super Rugby Pacific.
Reece, who started his Super Rugby career at the Waikato Chiefs in 2016 and moved to Christchurch six years ago, has also scored 18 tries in 32 tests for New Zealand.

Penney's side sealed a 16-12 win in a tense clash in Christchurch to earn the Crusaders a record-extending 15th Super Rugby title, but the 61-year-old gave no indication whether he would return for a third season in charge. 'Not just yet,' said Penney told a press conference after Saturday's match, when asked if he had made a decision on his future. 'You wouldn't want to work anywhere else. I'm never going to work anywhere else in the industry. I'll just take time to see what falls out of the (end of season) review.' The Crusaders' Super Rugby title win marked a significant turnaround after the struggles of 2024, when the team missed out on the play-offs at the end of Penney's first season in charge. Despite that failure, management decided to stick by the former New South Wales Waratahs coach and Penney delivered, with the Crusaders finishing second in the regular season standings behind the Chiefs. His side then went on to extend their remarkable run of success on home soil, winning a 32nd consecutive play-off match in Christchurch to reclaim the trophy once more. 'Winning's fantastic,' said Penney. 'Last year we had some hiccups and some things that didn't go well for us. This year we've been on the other side of the ledger. 'We've had some calls that have gone for us and we've had some injured boys available a lot. Small margins. At the business end the right people know how to do the right things and that was evident today. 'There's some people here that were contributing today that are going to be here for a long time, and it's just exciting what the future holds.' Wallabies confident but wary of wounded British and Irish Lions

PHOTO: AFP SYDNEY – Australia coach Joe Schmidt is confident the Wallabies can be competitive against the British and Irish Lions, but he will be wary of a side wounded by defeat to Argentina in a Dublin warmup. Andy Farrell's squad arrived in Perth on June 22 already feeling pressure after a slick Pumas exploited their lack of familiarity and cohesion in a rousing 28-24 victory on June 20. While far from the ideal send-off for a nine-game tour, which includes Tests in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, Farrell has time to fine tune. He was without the bulk of his Leinster players against Argentina, and his options are a lot stronger now they are involved. 'We need to be a lot better than that. And we will. We'll dust ourselves off but that will concentrate the minds,' he said. The first Test in Brisbane is not until July 19 after five lead-in games, starting against a Nic White-led Western Force on June 28, before meeting the Queensland Reds four days later. Clashes against the NSW Waratahs, ACT Brumbies and a combined Australia-New Zealand XV will follow. Lions skipper Maro Itoje said the loss to Argentina only served to highlight where they can improve. 'We showed glimmers of what we can do. But we did not consistently pile on the pressure. Argentina caught us napping sometimes,' he said. 'We weren't accurate enough in some areas but when we looked good, we looked good.' Schmidt is intimately familiar with the Lions coaching staff, none more so than Farrell, who was his right-hand man during a successful stretch as Ireland boss. He will know how much the defeat hurt. 'I know a lot of those guys very well... they'll be well-coached, well-organised and they have strength in depth,' Schmidt said of the Lions, speaking before the Argentina match. 'They can play in so many different ways, they can be really physical, they can be square and come at you, they can get you on the edges. 'We're going to have to be really well-prepared.' Whether they are sufficiently prepared remains to be seen, with Australia's only warmup a Test against Fiji on July 6. Schmidt is also conscious that outside of his Brumbies cohort, who featured in the Super Rugby semi-finals, the bulk of his squad have not had a competitive game since late May. He was initially said to be against members of his Test squad playing for their Super Rugby clubs against the Lions, to safeguard against injury, but appears to have relaxed his stance. 'One thing we're conscious of is making sure our clubs are competitive,' said Schmidt. 'Some of these guys haven't played – it'll be four or five weeks since they'll have played. So to get a game under their belt before they actually come into Wallaby camp may be the most advantageous situation.' Schmidt was installed to restore Australia's reputation after they slumped to 10th in the world following a horror 2023 Rugby World Cup under Eddie Jones. While credited with bringing stability and a new work ethic, the Wallabies are still only ranked eighth and Schmidt's record of six wins and seven defeats is nothing to shout about. But he is taking confidence from a last-gasp win over England at Twickenham in November and pushing Ireland to the limit in Dublin three weeks later. 'How confident are we of success against the Lions? I'm confident that we can be competitive,' he said. 'And if we can be within a score of the Lions and there's five to go, then we're a chance.' When they last toured Australia in 2013, the Lions won the Series 2-1 with Wallabies prop James Slipper the sole survivor. Coached by Warren Gatland, the visitors clinched the first Test in Brisbane 23-21 before Australia battled back with a gutsy 16-15 win at Melbourne. But it was all Lions in the Sydney decider, triumphing 41-16. It proved to be the last tour they won, drawing the series with New Zealand four years later and losing to South Africa in 2021. Chiefs can win Super Rugby Pacific title in future, says departing coach McMillan
Departing Waikato Chiefs coach Clayton McMillan said the team could claim a future Super Rugby Pacific title despite losing in the final for the third season in a row with Saturday's 16-12 defeat by the Canterbury Crusaders. McMillan, who has been in charge for all three final losses, is leaving to take over as head coach of Irish side Munster but retains confidence in the players to one day deliver success. "The consistency of our performances have been something to really relish," McMillan said. "I love these men and I know how hard they work and I'm confident that in the near future, they'll get across the line. "The wheels are going to keep ticking over and we've got bloody good people in the organisation and, who knows, maybe a change of head coach might be what's needed to get the job done." The loss in the final in Christchurch was the second in three seasons to the Crusaders for McMillan and his team, who were defeated in the 2024 edition by the Auckland Blues. Saturday's defeat was by the narrowest margin of the three, with only four points separating the teams at the end of a tense encounter, in which Rivez Reihana kicked 11 points for the Crusaders. "Everyone knows we have been to the final dance a number of times and not got the job done, but I'm at peace," McMillan said. "The disappointment will linger, but we can't change anything. It's done now. "The reflection will be about remembering all the good stuff that happened. But I know that we are a tight group who feel the disappointment, who have ridden the highs. "We will bounce back. The sun will rise in the morning, I think, here tomorrow, and life will continue. "People probably don't realise how tough it is to just get to a final, and even tougher when you've been to a number and you haven't quite got the job done."
