Rush hour commuters face massive disruption at one of Britain's busiest railway stations as blaze breaks out beside track

Rush hour commuters at one of Britain's busiest railway stations face lengthy delays after a fire broke out next to the track. National Rail is warning of cancellations and delays for passengers travelling between London Paddington and Heathrow Airport following the blaze. It has since been confirmed that the fire near the track at Acton Main Line has been extinguished, allowing trains to run through the station again. Passengers are being told there will be a 'major disruption' until 10pm with delays up to 35 minutes. In an update, National Rail confirmed the fire has been extinguished and that 'journeys running through this station to begin to run as normal again.' It said: 'Until service recovers, trains running between London Paddington and Heathrow Airport / Reading may still be cancelled, delayed by up to 35 minutes or revised. 'Major disruption is expected to continue to impact services until 22:00.' A notice at the station reads: 'Due to a fire next to the track between London Paddington and Reading some lines are blocked. More examples of UK's worst run railway.' Another added: 'Acton main line area set on fire now I'm stuck at Paddington sweating my balls off.' While a third said: 'Paddington is at a standstill.'

Eurostar passengers see dozens of train services cancelled or delayed

Eurostar passengers saw up to two dozen services between Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam and London cancelled or delayed on Wednesday. As some trains ground to a halt, a passenger on a train in France claimed the electricity had been cut off, leaving travellers with no air conditioning for more than half an hour. A Eurostar spokesperson told The Independent: 'Eurostar services between London and Paris were delayed by one to two hours following an incident on the LGV Nord high-speed line this morning, where a person was struck by a TGV train. 'We are working closely with the French authorities and infrastructure teams to manage the impact and keep services moving. Customers were contacted directly with updates and options and asked not to arrive at the station early to help ease congestion.' They added the air conditioning is a separate issue which is being investigated. One passenger said, according to The Telegraph: 'Eurostar train stuck for over half an hour now. Ventilation cut off, no communication for a quarter of an hour... it's starting to get hot, passengers are getting impatient. ''We're waiting for information from our driver. 'We apologise for the inconvenience' – but still no ventilation. It's getting hotter and hotter.' Eurostar's travel updates page displayed a list of delays and cancellations starting around 7am, although problems had started on Monday. Some services on Thursday and in August were also displayed as already being cancelled. Other services missed out stops, such as the 7.26pm Brussels to London St Pancras, which did not stop at Lille.

Signalling failure causes delays

Signalling problems have caused delays around Southampton Central railway station. Trains were having to run at reduced speed on all lines, and the disruption is expected to last until about 14:00 BST. South Western Railway (SWR) services between Romsey and Salisbury, and Salisbury and Chandlers Ford, are currently not running. SWR said it was "very sorry" for any delays, but that the problem had since been fixed and all lines had reopened. There are also delays of up to one hour between Fratton and Portsmouth Harbour due to an earlier train breaking down. Tickets can be used on CrossCountry services between Bournemouth and Basingstoke, and GWR services between Portsmouth and Salisbury, the train operator said. Due to the disruption passengers booking their own taxis between Weymouth and Basingstoke, Southampton and Portsmouth, and Southampton and Salisbury may be able to claim back the costs through the SWR website. Replacement buses are running between Southampton and Salisbury. South Western Railway was re-nationalised by the government on Sunday. Thousands affected as power outage trigger enormous train delays in Sydney

Commuters are in for a chaotic morning as several train lines remain delayed due to power supply issues at Strathfield station in the city's west. Trains were brought to a grinding halt on Tuesday afternoon about 2.30pm after part of a train's rooftop power connecter became tangled with the overhead powerlines, which were brought onto the track. The issue triggered massive delays across the train network, with five of six lines temporarily closing and leaving hundreds of commuters stranded for several hours, generating an enormous crowd through Central Station. Crews were on the scene overnight working to restore the power issue, and have removed a 'defective train' and repaired the overhead wiring. 'Teams are completing the final inspections before we reinstate the power later this morning to allow all six tracks from the west through Homebush to operate services,' a Transport NSW spokesman told NewsWire. 'Sydney Trains apologises again to passengers for the inconvenience of the continuing disruption.' The affected lines include the T1, T2, T3, T5, T6, T8, T9 and BMT lines, with commuters urged to seek alternative travel arrangements until the power supply issues are completed. Most trains will continue to be delayed on Wednesday morning, Transport NSW confirmed, with the Strathfield lines are expected to re-open early on Wednesday morning, though delays and gaps in services are still expected throughout the morning period. According to Sky News as of 6am, 15 per cent of all T1 lines are running on time, 25 per cent of T3 and 88 per cent of the T4 lines are operating as normal, whereas only five per cent of the Airport lines are on time and zero per cent are running on the T5 lines. 'Repair crews have worked throughout the night, and we expect all lines at Strathfield to be open again around 6:30am," a Transport NSW statement read. 'Trains will continue to operate on all lines but will not run to timetable and the frequency of service will be reduced. 'You may also need to change trains to continue your journey.' Limited replacement buses will replace trains between Lidcombe and Ashfield. As wild weather rips through Sydney and on The Central Coast, with flooding at Cockle Creek causing massive delays between the Newcastle Inerchange and Fassifern on The Central Coast and Newcastle line, with buses replacing trains. Trains at the Hunter Line are also not running due to flooding at Sandgate. While limited buses are replacing trains, they are unable to access some stations due to the flooding.
