Two police officers killed, two wounded in ambush in Pakistan's Balochistan province
QUETTA: Two police officers were killed and two others injured when gunmen ambushed a police patrol in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province, officials said on Sunday. The attack took place late on Saturday in Sui, a mountainous town about 50km from Dera Bugti city where police had rushed to respond to reports of a grenade explosion. Jalab Khan, station house officer at Sui Police, said officers were traveling in two vehicles when they were ambushed. 'Nearly a dozen armed men were hiding behind a large rock and attacked our vehicles with heavy gunfire, hand grenades and rocket-propelled grenades,' Khan told Arab News. 'Two policemen were killed on the spot and two sustained bullet wounds,' he said, adding that the attackers fled under the cover of darkness. The Baloch Republican Army (BRA), an ethnic Baloch separatist group, claimed responsibility for the attack. The BRA has been involved in multiple attacks on security forces and gas infrastructure in Dera Bugti, one of Pakistan's key natural gas-producing districts. The group emerged after the killing of veteran Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti during a military operation in 2006. Balochistan, which borders Afghanistan and Iran, is a mineral-rich region that is home to Beijing's investment in the Gwadar deep water port and other projects. It is Pakistan's largest province by size but smallest by population and the most impoverished. It has long been the site of a separatist insurgency by groups like the BRA, who are fighting for independence. Pakistan accuses neighboring India and Afghanistan of supporting Baloch separatist militants, a claim they deny. Islamabad also says neighboring Iran does not do enough against militants operating on their shared border. 'The slain policemen were local residents of Dera Bugti and their bodies have been handed over to families for burial,' said Atta Tareen, the district police officer for Dera Bugti. A first information police report hasd been registered and Balochistan's Counter Terrorism Department was leading the investigation, Tareen added.

3 Alawites killed after attack on Syrian government forces
Sectarian massacres in the Alawite heartland saw security forces kill more than 1,700 civilians in March. (EPA Images pic) BEIRUT : Three Alawite civilians were killed in western Syria overnight, hours after an attack on government forces killed at least one officer, a war monitor said on Wednesday. Syrian authorities said four civilians were targeted by unknown attackers in the Tal Kalakh area near the Lebanese border, killing two of them. Since an offensive toppled longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December, the Alawite community, which he hails from, has been repeatedly attacked. Britain-based war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the three civilians were killed in Baruha village by 'local armed groups' who also set fire to shops and cars. The head of security in Homs province, Murhaf Naasan, said: 'Four civilians were directly targeted by unknown people, killing two of them and critically wounding two others.' The deaths came hours after Syria's state-run Sana news agency reported that a security officer had been killed in an attack in the Tal Kalakh area. In March, sectarian massacres in the Alawite heartland on Syria's Mediterranean coast saw security forces and allied groups kill more than 1,700 civilians, mostly Alawites, according to the observatory's figures. The government accused Assad loyalists of sparking the violence by launching coordinated attacks on security forces. The government has since launched an inquiry.

Real or fake? Saudi Police drift, jump through car windshield to 'catch thief'
A video of Saudi Arabian police staging a dramatic car chase to apparently 'catch a thief' has been going viral on the internet, with many calling the act no less than a movie stunt. The video, shared by several accounts on Instagram, shows a white car being chased by a police vehicle in Riyadh. As the car speeds ahead, the police make a sudden drift, cutting right in front of the moving vehicle which brings it to a halt. One of the cops is seen jumping out of the police vehicle and smashing into the windshield of the white car. Another police vehicle approaching from behind stops the white car from escaping further. While the video is fascinating to watch and is indeed a jaw-dropping display of efficiency by the Saudi police, it wasn't a real chase to nab a runaway criminal. The video is from a mock drill conducted in Riyadh ahead of the Hajj pilgrimage. As part of its extensive preparations for Hajj 2025, Saudi Arabia conducted a large-scale security forces parade and military exercises in Makkah on May 31. The drill included synchronized formations, swift-response operations by commando units, and simulated emergency scenarios, including crowd disturbances and potential threat neutralization. The car chase part of the drill seemed to have caught the fancy of many Instagram handles who have been circulating it as a real attempt to catch a criminal. However, many social media users pointed out that there are tell-tale signs in the video to show that this wasn't an impromptu scenario. "Looks like a drill or shoot. There are many police vehicles in the background which were already at rest. Big screen showing the chase, car didn't try to evade after being stopped from front,' wrote one user on Facebook. The parade was conducted to verify and ensure the readiness of Saudi Arabia's security forces for the Hajj pilgrimage, which attracts thousands of people around the world. The drill was held to prepare for the logistical challenges and security issues that might arise during the annual event.
