Rebecca Gibney reveals the darkest period of her life as a recovering 'people pleaser' with a 'not normal' brain - ahead of her Dancing With The Stars debut
She's a Logie-winning actress and a TV favourite but behind the glowing smile, Rebecca Gibney has been quietly battling demons she now says nearly broke her. The Halifax f.p. star, 60, has opened up about the darkest chapter of her life -revealing she has long struggled with debilitating panic attacks, chronic people-pleasing tendencies and what she describes as a 'not normal' brain. 'I've got too many drop-down tabs going in my head. I can hyper focus on one thing and then I get panicked because I've let the other thing slide,' she told The Daily Telegraph. 'I suffered from panic attacks from the age of 14 until well into my 30s. If I could change one thing I wish my brain was a bit more normal.' Gibney, who is set to make her debut on Dancing With The Stars on Sunday, said the mental toll of the show was far greater than she expected and triggered deep-seated fears of not being 'good enough' that have plagued her since childhood. 'It was absolute sheer terror,' she confessed. 'I had moments where I resorted back to a 12-year-old being judged... it was really bizarre. You feel like you've let yourself down. You've let everyone else down.' Despite a successful career spanning four decades, Gibney says it's only now - after years of inner work - that she is learning to let go of perfectionism and prioritise her own wellbeing. 'I've probably always been a bit of a people pleaser – I think I inherited that from Mum. I can't enjoy myself unless everyone is too,' she said. 'As I get older, I'm getting better at setting boundaries… as my husband Richard says, "I'm not using up my happy pills on people that don't deserve it anymore".' Gibney has already been already proving that she'll be the fan favourite to beat on the upcoming season of the Channel Seven dance contest, which premieres on Sunday at 7.00pm. In March, she sent pulses racing by sharing a behind-the-scenes sneak peak at her dance training for the reality TV competition. 'Who would have thought I would ever get close to doing the splits again at my age,' the New Zealand-born actress humbly captioned the candid photo. In the image, she appears to be practising a tango with her dance partner Ian Waite, who holds her leg outstretched well above his hip. Gibney, who is set to make her debut on Dancing With The Stars on Sunday, said the mental toll of the show was far greater than she expected and triggered deep-seated fears of not being 'good enough' that have plagued her since childhood Gibney sold the sultry emotion of the dance as she tucked her head into Ian's embrace - with only the dancer's arms around her lithe frame keeping the Logie Hall of Fame member aloft. She recently freely admitted filming DTWS is 'the most challenging thing' she's ever done. 'Will I come out of it a pro dancer? No. Has there been tears? Yes. Lots' she said on social media. 'But it's also the most rewarding, amazing thing I've ever done,' Rebecca added. 'To be learning a new skill and being taught by one of the best in the world who is also such a beautiful human is an experience I will never ever forget. Thank you Ian and DTWS. 'More shows this week. Let's gooo.' The cast of Dancing With The Stars Australia for 2025 is shaping up as one of the most impressive seasons yet, and she joins an all-star cast alongside Osher Günsberg and Shaun Micallef.

She captioned the series of snaps: 'Hat game so strong (hat emoji)' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Her sizzling snaps come after she revealed she brings her therapist to work with her in a bid to manage the panic attacks that have plagued her for years. She opened up about her mental health struggles as she was announced as the newest celebrity ambassador for the mental health charity Mind. Perrie who has been very honest about her battle with anxiety and panic attacks, has shed light on how she's learning to cope - including having her therapist on hand to help her face the symptoms in the moment. The former X Factor winner – who's previously spoken about struggling with agoraphobia and blurred vision and breathlessness during a panic attack – said her biggest breakthrough came when she stopped trying to fight the feelings and started facing them in real-time. She told Metro: 'Last year, maybe in September, I started to take my therapist to work with me, which I know is a very privileged situation. 'I understand that not many people even have a therapist. So I thought, I'm going to make the most of it. 'I'm going to take her to work with me every day, and when I'm having a panic attack, she's going to coach me through it there and then.' She admitted that it was the 'best thing' she had ever done and wished she had done it sooner. The beauty also shared a sweet snap of herself and her son Axel, 3, and her beloved pooch Hatchi lapping up the sun Despite previously trying 'all different kinds' of therapy, Perrie confessed that the panic still hit her hard when it came out of nowhere and everything she'd been taught just 'went out the window.' The BRIT Award-winning star is on a mission to help break the stigma around anxiety and wants to encourage others to get the support they need. As part of her new role with Mind, she's pushing for more access to mental health resources for everyone. Not just those with the means to have support on speed dial. She added that she is trying to 'be at peace' with her anxiety and if she can help even one person feel less alone then it is all worth it. It comes after the singer admitted she fears she 'might die' as she opened up about her ongoing battle with panic disorders when she appeared on Alison Hammond's Big Weekend. Perrie invited the presenter into her home and spoke openly about how anxiety has affected her everyday life. 'I've developed panic disorder' she said. 'So it's the fear of having a panic attack. A few years ago, I started suffering from severe panic attacks. 'I then developed a fear of having one again because I was like, if I'm on my own and have a panic attack, I might die, and nobody will be here to help. She candidly added: 'That's why I'm never on my own. Never. I'm always with somebody. I don't like the feeling of feeling like I'm gonna die.' Elsewhere in the interview, Perrie revealed she wants to expand her family after welcoming a son Axel in 2021 with her partner Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Chatting about how Axel sleeps in her bed when Alex is away for work, Alison asked: 'Are you going to have another one?' To which Perrie replied: 'I'd love more. I've always wanted four but I know that's a bit excessive now because I know that we can't get in a car.' 'You just get a bigger car, don't you?' Alison responded. Perrie replied: 'I don't want to. I had a dream the other night that I was pregnant.' 'Should we go and get a pregnancy test?' Alison joked, to which Perrie said: 'Could you imagine.'

Jessie J, 37, suffers 'hardest day yet' amid her 'rollercoaster' battle with breast cancer as she breaks down in tears and struggles through panic attacks while 'drowning in the negativity' of her diagnosis
Jessie J revealed she suffered her 'worst day so far' amid her breast cancer battle as she broke down in tears and struggled through panic attacks on Saturday. The singer, 37, who announced her diagnosis in an emotional Instagram video last week, admitted 'drowning in the negativity' of her situation as she took to her Stories with a latest health update. In a lengthy post on Sunday, she wrote: 'Honestly, had my worst day so far yesterday since my diagnosis and the busiest three months I have had in years. Work. Toddler. Cancer. life etc had my mind [drained]. Jessie, who shares two-year-old son Sky with partner Chanan Colman, continued: 'Panic attacks/ tears. big fears/ anger/ overwhelm bad. And you know what helped?'. 'I ate a corn on the cob. Turns out it's extremely hard to panic or cry while eating one. Highly recommend. Instead mood shift'. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'Tomorrow is a new day. The [rollercoaster] of cancer is [draining]. I won't be just talking about the highlights. And making jokes all the time. That isn't real life. Goodnight'. Returning to social media on Monday, The Price Tag hitmaker penned: 'IMO. it's [key] to acknowledge fear anger sadness panic overwhelm and let it come up and come out. holding it in won't make it go away. In any challenging situation in life'. 'So when I posted what I did yesterday about my current challenge in life, also while making light of the situation. That was one day in 10 weeks that I just lost it and was completely drowned in all the negative and bed feelings any cancer journey can bring. Which is healthy and needed. She went on: 'So I will cry, I will be scared, I will panic, I will feel all of it for a minute or even a full day. And then eat a [corn] or listen to a song that lifts me up or laugh with a friend on Face Time. And then go and be a mum, and go to work and show up and be what I feel 90% of the time'. 'Strong, fearless, healthy, and make some jokes about it all because that's my way. But i will not ignore the 10% that is fear and sadness'. It comes after Jessie appeared to drop a hint about her cancer diagnosis weeks ago during a performance in London. But the announcement appears all the more poignant now given what Jessie is reported to have told fans while performing at Union Chapel on May 20. Accorrding to The Mirror, the star told her fans at the show she was putting herself first and wanted to have fun. She said: 'I know we are all going through our own battles in life, we are all struggling in our own way. We talk about it sometimes, and sometimes we don't. 'So I will cry, I will be scared, I will panic, I will feel all of it for a minute or even a full day. And then eat a [corn] or listen to a song that lifts me up or laugh with a friend on Face Time'. 'I'm grateful I have the voice and the strength to be able to put those experiences into songs that people can take and make them their own soundtrack to help them get through a tough time, a good time, a scary time.' The hitmaker also seemed to reference her cancer battle when she introduced her new song No Secrets. 'This song for me, more so than ever right now, is getting me through my life,' she said. Jessie revealed that she discovered she had the illness before the release of her hit new single No Secrets, which was released on April 25. The mother of one said she would be undergoing surgery after performing at the Summertime Ball in London on June 15. In the clip, Jessie said: 'Hi, I have been going back and forth a little bit on whether to share it. I want to but there's lots of opinions outside... 'Also knowing that I want to share with my fans and the people that care about me, also I'm a sharer. I've always shared everything that I go through in my life. 'Before No Secrets came out, I was diagnosed with early breast cancer. Cancer sucks in any form but I'm holding onto the word early. 'I have been in and out of tests throughout this whole period, adding that she had not been adequately 'processing it because I'm working so hard.' Jessie said she 'wanted to be open and share it - one, because selfishly I do not talk about it enough. I'm not processing it 'cause I'm working so hard.' She added: 'I also know how much sharing in the past has helped me, with other people giving me their love and support and also their own stories.' The London native stated: 'I'm an open book. It breaks my heart that so many people are going through so much, similar and worse. That's the bit that kills me.' 'I just wanted to let you guys know it wasn't something I planned. I'm getting to keep my nipples. That's good, it's a weird topic and a weird situation.' Jessie reflected: 'To get diagnosed with this as I'm putting out a song called No Secrets, right before a song called Living My Best Life – which was all pre-planned, before I found out about this. I mean, you can't make it up.' She joked: 'It's a very dramatic way to get a boob job,' adding that the operation to excise the cancer would occur sometime after her appearance at Summertime Ball at London's Wembley Stadium on June 15. Jessie told fans she would 'disappear for a bit after Summertime Ball to have my surgery and I will come back with massive t**s and more music.' Continuing the lighthearted mood, she wrote in the caption: 'No (more) Secrets and is it too soon to do a remix called Living My Breast Life? 'All jokes aside (you know it's one of the ways I get through hard times). This last two months have been so amazing, and having this go on alongside it on the sideline's has given me the most incredible perspective.
