Kansas City tow companies fighting back: ‘Nobody's listening'

SMITHVILLE, Mo. – Embattled tow operators in the Kansas City metro are now fighting back. One impound operator is filing suit, contending the city's efforts to prevent illegal towing expose tow truck operators to liability. Owners at Kansas City's Private Party Impound say they're filing suit against Jackson County and the city. Private Party owners say they have the support of at least 20 other tow operators. Jackson County to reclassify short-term rentals in new ordinance The suit contends a new Kansas City ordinance meant to lessen predatory towing will force impound companies to face liability. The lawsuit claims tow companies will now be forced to release impounded cars to people who don't own them. Under current regulations, anyone picking up an impounded automobile must present personal identification, proof of insurance, and proof of ownership. Kansas City councilmembers say they've heard complaints from the public about predatory towing. The council approved the new city ordinance on May 1, but it won't take effect until January 1, 2026. Private party impound operator Jay Bloodworth believes the county and city are driving into an area governed by Missouri statutes, and that releasing a vehicle to someone who isn't a registered owner will lead to lawsuits against impound companies. 'When we impound someone's car, it's in our care and custody. We're responsible for that vehicle. As a result of that, we're responsible to give it back to the correct party also,' Bloodworth said on Wednesday. Supreme Court backs Missouri's ban on gender transitions for children Bloodworth was arrested on May 13 as part of an investigation by the Missouri Department of Revenue into alleged illegal towing practices. Ron Rogers, a driver for Smithville's GT Towing, agrees with Bloodworth's opposition to Kansas City's ordinance. 'Nobody's listening to us. If (the public) would take a second and listen to both sides, maybe they would change their minds,' Rogers says tow company operators are seeking an injunction regarding the new ordinance. A Kansas City spokesperson says the city doesn't comment on pending litigation. The first courtroom date for Private Party Impound's lawsuit is October 7. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Have you received scam texts about an unpaid toll? You are not alone.

Text scams are the cockroaches of our digital lives — resilient and repulsive. With summer travel season starting and families hitting the road, I suspect many people will start seeing more scam toll and ticket text messages. On my phone, I have seen an increase in threats that I could face large penalties and even jail time. Others have been warned their vehicles could be impounded.
