Driver arrested after car plunges onto expressway in central Japan
Police have arrested the driver of a car that fell onto an expressway in central Japan's Shizuoka Prefecture, sending two children to a hospital. The man is suspected of driving without a license and fleeing the scene after abandoning the vehicle. The passenger car broke through a roadside barrier in the city of Hamamatsu on Sunday afternoon and plunged onto the Tomei Expressway. Police say the two children inside the vehicle were taken to a hospital, but neither was injured. Emergency officials say one of them is 8 years old and the other is aged 7. Police had been searching for the driver, who fled the scene. They arrested 47-year-old Kurebayashi Akiya on Monday, who claims to be jobless and to live in the city of Omaezaki in Shizuoka Prefecture. The police have not disclosed whether the suspect has admitted to the charges. They say investigators found Kurebayashi walking alone in Hamamatsu earlier in the day. They say his driver's license was revoked about 10 years ago, and that the car was registered under someone else's name. They say the two children are not related to the man by family or blood, but they also say there is no indication of abduction. Investigators are looking into what kind of relationship they are in and other details of the incident, including why the suspect left the scene.

Councils in Lower North Island against downgraded expressway plans
Two district councils in the Lower North Island are banding together against down graded plans for an expressway through their districts. More than a decade since it was originally proposed - a revised design for the Otaki to North of Levin expressway has seen on-ramps and overbridges removed and interchanges replaced by roundabouts. Council and community advocates from the Kapiti and Horowhenua districts say the sudden change has left locals confused and appalled. Bill Hickman has more. PLUS activates tidal flow lane on NKVE's Kota Damansara-Damansara stretch tonight for pavement improvement works
KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 — PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) will activate the tidal flow lane along the Kota Damansara-Damansara stretch (from KM18.90 to KM18.40) of the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) from 10 pm today until noon tomorrow. In a statement today, the expressway concessionaire said the temporary traffic arrangement is necessary to facilitate pavement improvement works on the emergency and left lanes at KM18.63 as part of the continuous effort to provide a more comfortable experience for highway users. Therefore, it advised highway users to plan their journeys using the PLUS App to obtain the latest traffic information. They are also advised to adhere to all traffic signs and instructions issued by PLUS personnel when passing through the affected area Highway users can also obtain the latest traffic information through the PUTRI Virtual Assistant, X@plustrafik App, and Electronic Signboards (VMS) at selected locations as well as contact PLUSLine at 1800-88-0000 in the event of any emergencies. — Bernama
