Issas' petrol station giant drops diversity goals before £13bn US listing

The Issa brothers' petrol station empire is rolling back diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) targets as it gears up for a £13bn listing in the US. EG Group said it was no longer pursuing a goal to increase the number of women in senior leadership roles in the US, saying its diversity initiatives only applied 'in regions where legally permissible'. It previously had set a company-wide goal to increase the proportion of women in top roles to 40pc by 2025, from 20pc in 2021. However, the US – which is EG Group's largest market – has since been excluded from that objective. EG Group said it was also reviewing gender targets for the rest of the business, which includes operations in Australia and Europe. The UK arm of the company was sold last year. The retreat from diversity goals comes as EG appeared to fall short of its 40pc gender goal for 2025. By 2024, just 27pc of senior leadership roles were held by women, according to its latest filings, with the company admitting that this was 'some way off achieving [its] target'. The diversity shake-up comes as the billionaire Issa brothers push ahead with plans to list Blackburn-based EG Group in the US for as much as £13bn. EG Group is jointly owned by the Issa brothers and private equity firm TDR. TDR owns 50pc of the company, while Mohsin and Zuber hold 25pc each. The brothers have both stepped back from running the business over the past year. Meanwhile, the move to pull the US female representation target comes as more companies start to roll back their inclusivity programmes amid a crackdown by Donald Trump. The US president has banned companies with federal contracts from operating 'illegal' DEI programmes. It has meant a wave of UK businesses have started to ditch diversity efforts, including drug giant GSK and consulting giant Accenture. When addressing diversity in its latest report, EG said it wanted to ensure its targets 'are fit for purpose going forward and focused on the areas that matter most to our colleagues and customers, but also to our investors, regulators and wider society'. A spokesman said: 'EG Group complies with all relevant laws and regulations in the jurisdictions in which we operate. 'We remain committed to being an equitable and inclusive business, reflecting the diversity of our colleagues, customers and wider communities.'

End of financial year review: Does your home loan measure up?

The end of a financial year often brings a natural focus on finances — especially if you are investing in property as you prepare for tax returns. As one of your biggest financial commitments, it's the perfect time to review your home loan to ensure it meets your goals for the financial year ahead. Some borrowers have already kicked off their reviews, with the latest Mortgage Choice Home Loan Report revealing the value of refinance loans was up 30 per cent year-on-year over the March quarter. So, is it worth finding out if your home or investment loan is still giving you the best bang for your buck? The short answer is of course yes. Your reasons for reviewing your loan will be different to your neighbours', but it's worth taking time to review your loan to ensure it's working for you. Reach out to a mortgage broker who can compare your loan against what's in the market to see if you can access a sharper rate, an improved loan structure, or help you understand if you can tap into your equity. This end of financial year, ask yourself these four questions. Can I access a better rate? The Reserve Bank of Australia has already delivered two rate cuts this year, and the market is predicting a third cut on 8 July. As we see more cuts to the cash rate, competition will ramp up as some lenders pass on the savings in full, and others don't. Some lenders are offering great rates to attract new customers, so if your home loan rate doesn't start with a 5, you might be paying too much. Can I claim tax deductions? If you have a mortgage on an investment property, now is the perfect time to take stock of the interest you paid, as well as any expenses related to property maintenance or management as you may be able to claim tax deductions relating to these expenses on your next return. Will a better loan structure offer me any benefits? Refinancing could help you access different loan features or a structure that better suits your needs, such as an offset account or redraw facility. Am I rolling off a fixed rate? If your fixed-rate term is coming to an end soon, it's the right time to shop around. When your fixed term ends, your lender will automatically move you onto a standard variable rate loan, but it may not be the most competitive on offer. Can I access equity? Property values continue to rise, with national values up 4.12 per cent year-on-year according to the May PropTrack Home Price Index. If your property has increased in value while you've had your home loan, you may have equity built up that could help you negotiate a lower rate or even put you in a position to upgrade your home or purchase another property.

In Israel, Iran's latest wave of missiles damaged a hospital in the southern city of Beer Sheva as well as several high-rise buildings in Ramat Gan, just east of Tel Aviv. At least 65 people were injured, Israel's emergency services said. Iran's state news agency reported that the 'principal target' of the missile strike that damaged the Israeli hospital was a nearby technology park used by the Israel Defense Forces. In Iran, 40 Israeli fighter jets struck the 'inactive' Arak nuclear facility about 155 miles southwest of Tehran during a series of overnight raids. The facility was reportedly not seriously damaged. In the skies above both countries, civilians who remained above ground could see anti-aircraft fire intercepting even more missile attacks. In recent months, at least five elected officials have been arrested or confronted by police for protesting President Trump's sweeping deportation efforts. New York City comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander was arrested at Manhattan's immigration court on Tuesday. Sen. Alex Padilla, California's first Latino elected to the Senate, was forcefully removed from a news conference in Los Angeles last week and handcuffed on the ground after attempting to ask Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem a question. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested for attempting to join three members of New Jersey's congressional delegation inside an immigration detention facility on May 9. Rep. LaMonica McIver was indicted last week on federal charges alleging she interfered with immigration officers outside the same detention center. The Trump administration plans to end the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline's specialized services for LGBTQ+ youth. According to the Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, anyone who reaches out to the 988 Lifeline will still receive help, but the 'Press 3 option,' which connected callers to crisis counselors trained to work with LGBTQ+ youth and adults under 25, will no longer be available. Since the specialized service launched in 2022, nearly 1.3 million callers have reached out for assistance. The change was announced on the same day the Supreme Court upheld Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for transgender minors. Roughly half of US states have bans similar to Tennessee's. Transgender advocates framed the ruling as a 'devastating loss.' A heat dome is expected to send temperatures soaring to record-breaking levels over the weekend and into next week. According to the National Weather Service, more than 15 million people from Washington, DC, to Florida are under a level 3 of 4 heat risk today. Many places will experience highs in the low- to mid-90s. When factoring in the humidity, it will feel even hotter and stickier. Temperatures are also forecast to climb across parts of the Northeast and central US in advance of next week's intense heat dome. That dome is forecast to expand across the central and eastern US, and high temperatures are predicted to rise at least 15 degrees above normal. It could feel as hot as 110 degrees, especially in the Mid-Atlantic region. If you're going to be under the dome, take care. Heat remains the deadliest form of extreme weather in the US, contributing to more than 800 deaths annually since 1999. Federal theft and conspiracy charges have been announced against seven people who were allegedly involved in an operation prosecutors described as 'the largest jewelry heist in US history.' A newly-unsealed federal grand jury indictment said the crew of serial thieves spotted a Brinks tractor-trailer leaving a jewelry show in San Mateo, California, on July 10, 2022. The suspects allegedly followed the truck south for nearly 300 miles, and when the driver pulled into a truck stop, they broke in and stole 24 bags filled with jewelry, gold, Rolex watches and thousands of loose diamonds. Agents recovered some of the loot, which was worth about $100 million, while executing a search warrant on Monday.
