New Nissan Leaf unveiled

Nissan has shown its new Leaf electric car that's set to roll off the production line in Sunderland - the UK's biggest car plant. It is the first model to be launched under Nissan's EV36Zero blueprint for the future of EV production and will be built in the North East by the plant's team of 6,000 people. Nissan says the new third generation Leaf has been engineered and fine-tuned to suit the needs of European customers at Nissan's UK research and development centre, NTCE, in Cranfield, UK. It will be powered by batteries from AESC which is situated next to the Nissan plant. The Sunderland plant will also build the next generation Nissan Qashqai e-POWER (which will arrive this year), followed next year by an all-new fully electric Juke. Alan Johnson, Senior Vice President of Manufacturing & Supply Chain Management at Nissan Motor Manufacturing, said: 'It's with immense pride that we unveil the third generation of our pioneering electric Leaf, twelve years after we brought EV and battery manufacturing to the UK. 'It's a testament to the skill of our world-class team that we can bring into mass production a vehicle with such advanced technology and aerodynamic design. We can't wait to see it on the roads.' The new Leaf will be able to travel up to 375 miles on a single charge and will be available for customers to order later this year. James Taylor, managing director of Nissan GB, said: 'We're really excited about the launch of the all-new Leaf later this year. It builds on the success of the previous two generations, which have found homes with more than 70,000 UK customers. 'Leaf is a pioneering electric vehicle that has encouraged thousands to make the switch to electric motoring – and best of all, it's built here in Britain.' A new fully-electric Micra, designed in London, will also go on sale later this year, and Nissan says it will also launch a smaller city car in 2026. Car Deal of the Day: Premium Polestar 2 for a paltry £308 a month

Smart design, premium feel Long 344-mile range Only £307.54 a month Polestar is really flexing its muscles right now in the electric car space with the new 3 and 4 SUVs. But while those cars are in the limelight, don't forget the original Polestar 2 that kicked off the brand as we know it today. Advertisement - Article continues below This deal will certainly put the Polestar 2 front and centre in your mind if you're looking for a premium electric saloon, because, through the Auto Express Find a Car service, you can get one for less than £310 a month. Select Car Leasing is offering the posh Polestar for just £307.54 a month right now. An initial payment of £4,044.48 is required to kick things off, and this is a four-year deal with a cap of 5,000 miles a year. You won't be stung if you need extra miles, because an agreement for 8,000 miles per annum will only cost you around £7 extra a month. This will be welcome news to those who need a long-legged EV with a chunky mileage allowance. The Polestar 2 certainly can travel long distances between charges. This deal gives you the Standard Range model, but even this can manage a claimed 344 miles before needing to be topped up. Plus, with its 135kW DC charging capability, a rapid charge will take less than 30 minutes. The 2 was the car that effectively launched the electric Polestar name to the masses (the Polestar 1 was a small volume plug-in hybrid coupé), and as such it has the premium look and feel the brand strives to offer. The interior is brimming with lovely design details and trimmed with eco-friendly materials, and the Google-based infotainment system is a joy to use. It's good to drive, too, because Polestar has given a sporty edge to the ride and handling, meaning that despite its advancing years the 2 is still one of the most engaging premium EVs around. The Car Deal of the Day selections we make are taken from our own Auto Express Find A Car deals service, which includes the best current offers from car dealers and leasing companies around the UK. Terms and conditions apply, while prices and offers are subject to change and limited availability. If this deal expires, you can find more top Polestar 2 leasing offers from leading providers on our Polestar 2 hub page. Nissan Leaf prototype review: the pioneering electric car has grown up. Literally Reviews 2025

Another crossover. Of course. Be not so quick to judgement, for this is one of the original mainstream electric car names, now reimagined for a wider, more tech-savvy and electro-literate audience. I'd forgotten about the Leaf. Indeed, when Nissan first launched its game-changing electric hatch back in 2010, it looked embarrassed to be there – mostly because it was 2010 and electric cars were upstairs having a debate while petrol engines were downstairs necking shots. Advertisement - Page continues below Now it's 2025, and EVs haven't just crashed the party, they've taken over the DJ, too. And sensing this is getting out of hand, perhaps we might accelerate away from this increasingly fraught analogy and into the Leaf's… acceleration. Presumably it has some? Yes, but gentle acceleration. was privy to but two laps in a pre-production prototype at Nissan's proving ground in Japan; a proving ground which strung together a very tempting long straight, a couple of hairpins and a bit of switchback (for reasons we're unable to fathom, the pictures above were captured much closer to home at… Millbrook Proving Ground). We weren't allowed to go full Tsunoda – mostly because the Leaf isn't a cursed second seat – but what we gleaned was very reassuring. How so? The Leaf has grown up. It feels a bit more premium, both in the control weights of its steering, and of its damping. It's 28 per cent stiffer over the second-gen car, largely thanks to four-link rear suspension which, says Nissan, allows it to maintain good ride quality over rougher tarmac without falling to pieces. Advertisement - Page continues below Does it? Admittedly the tarmac we tested it on was smooth and clean enough to eat your sushi off, but within a few metres the Leaf already felt composed, and most importantly for a car like this, comfortable. It's even changed the motor mounts to reduce vibration, and it certainly felt calm inside. Now it's 2025, will it smoke an old M3 at the lights? Nissan has wisely avoided the temptation to simply fill the Leaf with neck-snapping accelerative force because – once again for the people at the back – this is a sensible, mainstream family car. And as such, needs to be measured. It feels it, at least from the two laps we had. Nissan has yet given us a quoted 0-62mph time, but it wasn't lacking in urgency, and nor was it quick enough to trouble an old M3 at the lights. 2026 Tesla Model S Review: Expert Insights, Pricing, and Trims

The Tesla Model S is an electric car. When it launched for 2013, the Model S was Tesla's first mainstream electric car. Various updates have been applied to the Model S over the years, including a substantial refresh made for 2022. Tesla has made a few more changes for 2026. Rivals to the Model S include the Lucid Air, Audi A6 E-Tron, and BMW i5. What's New Basics Updated suspension tuning to yield a more comfortable ride A quieter cabin Claimed range rises to 410 miles on the AWD model, up from 405. With 21s, range is 380 miles. Plaid model has a claimed 368-mile range, up from 359. With 21s, range is 328 miles. Exterior Mildly updated headlights and taillights, with adaptive-beam headlights Updated lower front fascia New Frost Blue exterior color option Attractive new 19- and 21-inch wheel designs Front-facing camera to aid in parking maneuvers Interior Updated "dynamic" ambient lighting on the dashboard and doors Inside the 2026 Model S The 2026 Model S' interior is merely decent, not competitive with truly luxurious electric sedans. The simple, streamlined design is available in three interior hues: black, white, and beige. As ever, a large 17.4-inch central touchscreen is a primary design feature and unlike the Model 3 and Model Y, the Model S continues to have a standard driver display. That 12.3-inch display in front is joined by a 9.4-inch touchscreen for rear-seat passengers. New Model S Power and Performance—2026 Plaid? As is the case today, the standard 2026 Model S is a dual-motor AWD setup making approximately 670 hp, providing a 0–60 mph time of about 3.1 seconds. In an attempt to steal back acceleration records from the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT Weissach, Tesla may one day introduce an upgraded version of the triple-motor Model S Plaid with even more power than the 1,020 hp it has now. It would need to launch from 0–60 mph in less than 1.89 seconds if it wants to beat that epic Taycan. For now, we continue to wish the Model S Plaid came with fortified brakes to effectively and repeatedly counter its strong acceleration. Model S Range and Charging Currently, all versions of the Model S come with a 100-kWh battery pack. Depending on specification, it can cover between approximately 328 and 410 miles on a charge, a bit more than the 2025 model. Maximum charge rate tops out at 250 kW. Like all Tesla cars and an increasing number of vehicles from other automakers, the 2026 Model S has access to the Supercharger network. Self-Driving Model S? The 2026 Model S comes equipped with Autopilot assist features such as automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. The so-called Full Self-Driving (FSD) software will also be available for an extra charge, allowing for hands-free driving on essentially any public road. In our experience, FSD is prone to erratic behavior and dumb decision making that calls into question its safety and utility. Other Electric Sedans: Lucid Air Porsche Taycan BMW i5 Audi A6 E-Tron

Peugeot e-208 GTi Is a Return to Hot Hatches for the French Brand

Peugeot announced the return of the GTi badge with the new e-208 GTi hatchback. The electric hot hatch makes 276 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque from its lone front-mounted motor. The e-208's verve isn't confined to the numbers; the GTi gets a look that matches its demeanor, with a widened stance, a new spoiler, and an aggressive rear diffuser. It's a big week for fast cars over in France. You may not have heard, but it's Le Mans weekend, and now Peugeot has announced the return of the GTi badge. That's right—the electric 208 has been given the GTi treatment, and it looks phenomenal. Peugeot Peugeot Starting off with the performance, the GTi's front-mounted motor was lifted from the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce, its larger platform-mate. The lone motor produces a healthy 276 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, which is enough to launch the little hatchback to 62 mph in a claimed 5.7 seconds. That may not sound like much here in the U.S., but the GTi has 142 more horsepower than the standard e-208 hatchback. Peugeot Along with making decent power, the e-208 GTi is equipped with a limited-slip differential to keep things tidy in high-speed corners. The tracks have been widened by 2.2 inches at the front and 1.0 inch at the rear. The suspension is fitted with hydraulic bump stops, dropping the ride height by 1.1 inches. The steering is also said to have been tuned for a more direct response during spirited driving. The real performance upgrade comes to the tires, with Peugeot equipping the e-208 GTi with a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber. In typical GTi fashion, the e-208 gets a visual makeover to match the performance upgrades. In addition to the wider and lower stance, the GTi gets a more aggressive front lip, along with a sizable spoiler and a large diffuser at the rear. Peugeot Given that Peugeot doesn't compete in the U.S., the new hot hatch won't be sold here. Despite the attractive performance metrics, we figure the rather small 54-kWh battery would scare off most American customers anyway. Jack Fitzgerald Associate News Editor Jack Fitzgerald's love for cars stems from his as yet unshakable addiction to Formula 1. After a brief stint as a detailer for a local dealership group in college, he knew he needed a more permanent way to drive all the new cars he couldn't afford and decided to pursue a career in auto writing. By hounding his college professors at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he was able to travel Wisconsin seeking out stories in the auto world before landing his dream job at Car and Driver. His new goal is to delay the inevitable demise of his 2010 Volkswagen Golf. Read full bio
