Young driver (25) caught doing doughnuts by gardaí before leading them on chase

A young driver caught doing doughnuts before "fishtailing" in front of gardaí and trying to outrun them by heading for the border to escape has been given a suspended jail sentence. Ben Murray (25) appeared before Letterkenny District Court in Co Donegal charged with dangerous driving. Advertisement The court heard that Murray was attending his first Donegal International Rally in June 2024. Gardaí had called to Drumbarnett, Manorcunningham, after complaints from the public that the road had been blocked and a number of cars were doing doughnuts just before midnight. When gardaí arrived, they observed a Lexus is200 performing doughnuts and activated their blue lights. The driver of the car then fishtailed in front of the patrol car forcing gardaí to reverse their patrol vehicle to avoid being hit. Advertisement The Lexus sped off but was apprehended in the early hours of the following morning heading for the border. The driver, Ben Murray, was arrested and was apologetic to gardaí. His solicitor, Patsy Gallagher, said Murray was attending his first rally and was "showing off for friends." He had made admissions and the car was lifted and his father and uncle had to come and collect the student, added the solicitor. Advertisement Judge Ciaran Liddy asked the court if Murray, of Carlton Drive, Strabane, Co Tyrone, had any previous convictions. Sergeant Jim Collins said he had one previous conviction for drug driving and had been disqualified for one year. Judge Liddy noted that Murray was only back on the road for five months when this incident occurred. "This man is looking at a jail sentence," said the judge. Advertisement Mr Gallagher said he was asking the court to take a more diplomatic approach adding it was "one stupid mistake." His client has now adopted a serious attitude to the incident and 'he should have acted more appropriately', he added. Mr Gallagher said that there was an impression given that Murray was 'aiming for the border', but told the court that it was not an evasive situation. 'There was no chase or otherwise,' he said, adding that the car has been moved on. Advertisement He said Murray is doing a traineeship for cranes and has his preliminary tests done and planned to go to Scandinavia to finish that process. Mr Gallagher asked the court to consider reducing the charge to one of careless driving and to consider Murray's early plea. 'The shock of being here has had a very awakening effect on him,' Mr Gallagher said. Judge Ciaran Liddy said the road was blocked deliberately to 'facilitate boy racer activity involving this man performing a fishtail manoeuvre on the public highway'. Judge Liddy noted that a Garda patrol car had to take evasive action to avoid being struck and that Murray proceeded to drive towards Derry. Ireland Learner drivers who had vehicles seized for drivin... Read More He said Murray was only just back on the road having concluded a driving ban for drink-driving only six months previously. Judge Liddy said: 'It is clear that he learned very little from his experience in court on the previous occasion.' Judge Liddy said that only for Murray having been 'well advised' to plead guilty he would be imposing an immediate custodial sentence. Murray was handed a six-month prison sentence that was suspended for two years. Murray was also disqualified from driving for two years and fined €300.

Fail-safe dishes to tempt you back into the kitchen

It's not difficult to get sick of cooking. I've been testing recipes for five days on the trot. There are cooked and partly cooked doughnuts – three different types, most of them torn open – on my kitchen counter. I've had to judge for how long – and at what temperature – the variations need to be fried. When I'm cooking a fresh batch at two in the morning (it does happen), I curse myself for suggesting doughnuts at all. But curiosity always gets the better of me. When I was able to recreate the beignets I ate in New Orleans 30 years ago, I danced around the kitchen even though nobody else was there. Popping another cloud in my mouth I heard myself say, 'Oh my God!' at the sugary lightness. I'd cracked the code. I would be able to make these again and again (and tell you how to do it too). Even though I've now finished my doughnut recipes, I want to continue; to try another couple of types (there are spiced Indian ones, and I've read about some filled with honey and saffron cream). I'm in a zone where I'm excited by discovery, where making things is as much of a thrill now as it was when I was a child. I can get fed up testing recipes, but never for long. It's the daily grind of family meals that kills enthusiasm. It's not acceptable to complain about cooking for your children. That makes you a bad mother. Your cooking keeps them alive, but it goes beyond that. I know that the meals I gave mine when they were 10 and 16 dictate what their health will be like long after I'm gone. My sons are grown up now, they're not at the picky stage, but I can't make pasta, tuna and sweetcorn (their favourite childhood dish) ever again. There was a limited range of dishes they would eat, and I hate throwing food out. I only ventured beyond shepherd's pie when I was almost certain that an unfamiliar recipe would go down well. Cooking for children can be soul-destroying. I was thinking about how much I cooked for friends when I was in my 20s (before children) – apple strudel made with my own pastry, pumpkin-stuffed tortelloni (I was still in my underwear when my guests rang the doorbell), a delicate fish terrine cooked in wafer-thin herb crêpes served with beurre blanc. Every Saturday I made dishes I'd never cooked before. There was no internet to provide unusual ingredients; no Ocado to bring everything to your door. Instead, I went shopping to get the best fish and meat possible, took lengthy bus trips to find long Turkish peppers or belacan, a fermented shrimp paste used in Malaysian cooking. I was smelling and touching great produce, dazzling pink radishes, purple-tinged asparagus. And don't get me started on cheese shopping. If you love food, shopping for it intensifies that love. To rekindle your love of cooking, give yourself a day to source ingredients, to sniff tomatoes and strawberries and look at creamy white rounds of burrata sitting in cloudy pools. The next thing is to invite one person – your partner, a close friend, maybe another food lover – so you can cook for only two people. You'll be under less pressure than when cooking for 12 and, more importantly, you can really notice what happens to the ingredients when they're subjected to heat – you have the head space to pay attention. Finally, decide on a meal that's simple. If you're a good cook it's easy to add another side dish or do more than you need to (I used to think I had to make my own bread). This is a lovely menu made up of components that celebrate the slide towards summer. Take a couple of days, one for shopping and one for cooking, and immerse yourself. Feel your love returning in these fail-safe dishes.

Doughnut Snob brings gourmet doughnuts to CBS News Texas for National Doughnut Day

Friday is National Doughnut Day, and what better way to celebrate than with some of the best doughnuts North Texas has to offer? CBS News Texas invited The Doughnut Snob, a Fort Worth-based food truck known for its gourmet creations, to pull up and treat the newsroom. CBS News Texas The team also got a peek inside the compact kitchen, where owner David Cudmore claims they're serving the best doughnuts in Texas, at least according to one particular customer base. "There's a myth about law enforcement officers and doughnuts," Cudmore said. "We have been told repeatedly all over North Texas by police officers that we have the best doughnuts." Sweet cream, buttermilk base So, what's the secret? "We make a sweet cream, buttermilk cake doughnut," Cudmore said. Each doughnut starts with a rich batter that's dropped into hot oil by a machine he calls "the hopper," then fried to golden perfection. After that, the real fun begins -- decorating with a lineup of creative, homemade toppings. Creative flavors steal the show A favorite at the station was the apple cinnamon streusel dipped in a house-made crumble. But he also served up Samoa, Bavarian cream, maple bacon, Oreo, blueberry cheesecake, and their seasonal hit, strawberry shortcake doughnuts. "My favorite is the blueberry cheesecake," Cudmore said. "They're definitely a splurge, but always worth it. Calories are calories," he added. "But doughnuts aren't always just doughnuts." Competing for food truck gold The Doughnut Snob has clearly made an impression in North Texas. This weekend, Cudmore and his crew will compete at the Food Truck Championships of Texas in Graham, entering their seasonal strawberry shortcake doughnut in hopes of bringing home the gold -- and a grand prize of $10,000.
