Vance reference to Alex Padilla as ‘Jose' during LA presser sparks Dem backlash

Several California Democrats slammed Vice President Vance after he referred to Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) as 'Jose' during a Friday presser in Los Angeles. 'I was hoping Jose Padilla would be here to ask a question,' Vance said, referring to Padilla's forcible removal from a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) press conference last week. 'I guess he decided not to show up because there wasn't a theater,' he continued. Democrats railed against Vance for misnaming the state's first Latino senator, who the vice president served alongside before his successful White House bid. 'Calling him 'Jose Padilla' is not an accident,' California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said in a Friday post on the social media platform X. Newsom also urged Vance, who spoke about the governor's response to unrest sparked by mass Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in the region, to make remarks to his face during a debate, instead of online or during public events in a later post. While Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D) echoed the governor's concerns, she cited potential racial undertones in Vance's remarks. 'I guess he just looked like anybody to you, but he's not just anybody to us. He is our senator,' Bass said during a Friday presser. 'Mr. Vice President, how dare you disrespect Senator Alex Padilla like that? You serve with him in the Senate right now. You know him,' Bass wrote in a post on X, referring to the vice president's role as president of the upper chamber. However, Vance's spokesperson said the mix up was an innocent mistake. 'He must have mixed up two people who have broken the law,' Taylor Van Kirk, a spokesperson for Vance told reporters on Friday. But Padilla's colleagues aren't buying it. 'JD Vance served alongside Alex Padilla, and knows better. He's taking this cheap shot to distract from the real fear and havoc this Administration is creating,' Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) wrote in a Friday post on X. 'It's pathetic.' The vice president's visit to Los Angeles came a day after a federal appeals ruled President Trump could retain control of the California National Guard in response to the protests. Both Bass and Newsom have encouraged the Trump administration to remove the National Guard and Marines from Los Angeles, arguing the city is safer without federal forces. Democratic lawmakers have continued to question the conditions detained illegal immigrants are being held under as well as law enforcement's use of physical force against protesters and members of Congress seeking to conduct oversight of immigration operations. Royal Oak mayor, residents speak out about disrespect at public meetings

City leaders in Royal Oak, Michigan, say some residents are getting too rowdy at public meetings. At times, public meetings tend to get heated. Royal Oak Mayor Mike Fournier says disruptions and harassment have gotten so out of hand over the last few months that it has affected folks in the community. CBS Detroit "Typically, I've been able to address those (disruptions) by taking recesses, taking breaks and getting the meeting back in order, being very respectful of everyone present. But lately, I've been receiving some honest criticism from folks about how they feel intimidated to come to our public meeting and to participate in those meetings. You might hear folks in the background hemming and hawing, saying, 'Sit down.' People will start yelling at the city commission, they'll start clapping and interrupting," said Fournier. The mayor took to social media ahead of Monday's city commission meeting, ultimately saying disrespect will no longer be tolerated. CBS Detroit For 50-year Royal Oak resident Katherine Howell, respect goes both ways. "I have watched and seen how disrespectful the leadership is in Royal Oak," Howell said. Howell says she doesn't go to meetings often, but the one time she did a few months ago, she was shut down during one of her three minutes of public comment by the mayor. "I'm a rule follower. When I came to the mic, the mayor said to me, 'Mrs. Howell, you've allotted your time.' I was appalled. He did not say the words, but it felt like he was saying to me shut up and sit down," said Howell. CBS Detroit Other residents like Rachel Carter are disappointed that tensions have led to turmoil. "I know that things can get emotional and heated, but I thought it was kind of sad the mayor had to call out people and basically tell them to behave. Tensions can run high, emotions can run high, but I think we just need to take a deep breath and be respectful of one another," Carter said. The mayor says he's committed to ensuring meetings remain civil moving forward. "Let's just have mutual respect. If we agree to disagree, that's great. Please come. We showed last night that we have a welcoming environment, it takes all of us to make these decisions, and let's make sure every voice is heard," said Fournier.

Trump says his relationship with Musk is over, slamming the door on the once-staunch ally who tried to de-escalate their feud

The feud between Donald Trump and Elon Musk appears to have caused irreparable damage as the president told NBC News that he has no desire to repair their relationship and assumes it is over. The comments came after Musk appeared to make attempts at de-escalating a feud that exploded in public on Thursday over Trump's budget bill. President Donald Trump is seemingly done with Tesla CEO Elon Musk after they engaged in a feud on Thursday that unfolded publicly and escalated stunningly. In an interview with NBC News on Saturday, Trump was asked if he has any desire to mend his relationship with Musk, and the president replied 'no.' And when asked if he thinks his relationship with Musk is over, Trump said, 'I would assume so, yeah.' He added that he has 'no intention of speaking' to Musk anytime soon, saying 'I'm too busy doing other things' and accusing Musk of disrespecting the presidency. 'I think it's a very bad thing, because he's very disrespectful. You could not disrespect the office of the President,' Trump said. The comments came after Musk, who once embraced the moniker 'first buddy' to Trump, appeared to make attempts at de-escalating their feud. On Saturday, he deleted his X posts about Trump's association with the infamous Jeffrey Epstein. On Thursday night, Musk replied to a post from Pershing Square CEO Bill Ackman calling for peace between the tech billionaire and Trump, saying 'You're not wrong.' Also on Thursday, Musk backtracked on a threat to decommission SpaceX Dragon vehicles, which have become workhorse capsules that the Pentagon and NASA rely on to access Earth orbit. But the damage was already done. Musk had suggested Trump should be impeached, took credit for Trump's election victory, and said his tariffs would cause a recession later this year. That's after trashing Trump's tax and spending bill in the days leading up to their meltdown. Trump's signal that Musk is now persona non grata dashes hopes from top Republicans like Vice President JD Vance and House Speakers Mike Johnson who said they hoped the two men would reconcile. Meanwhile, Trump also warned Musk—who was the top GOP donor last year with nearly $300 million in campaign contributions—against backing Democrats. 'If he does, he'll have to pay the consequences for that,' Trump told NBC News, without elaborating. 'He'll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that.' For his part, Musk asked X users on Thursday if it's time to form a new political party 'that actually represents the 80% in the middle,' drawing support from 80% of respondents. Tesla didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. This story was originally featured on

‘Slapped': Gymoger fumes over man's disgusting act

A woman has taken to social media to vent about a disgusting encounter she had with a man at a gym that left her seething. Kayla Nicole, who dated NFL star Travis Kelce for around five years before they parted ways in 2022, is known for her health and wellness content and often shares her workouts online. However, over the weekend, she used Instagram to express her frustration about the 'disrespectful' incident. Writing on her stories over a photo of herself in workout gear at the gym, the 33-year-old sports journalist didn't mince her words. ''Blowing your blueberry eggs and ham vape smoke in my face in the gym while trying to ask if I'm done with the smith machine will get you slapped,' the fitness enthusiast said. 'The f**k is wrong with y'all?' she added, clearly fuming. In a follow-up post, she shared a clip of the offending vaping device on the gym floor and wrote, 'I want to step on it'. She didn't reveal the identity of the gymgoer or the specific gym where this interaction happened. Commenters shocked by 'low class' act 'I'm surprised one can vape anywhere,' said one commenter online. 'Vaping in a gym is very low class,' another added. 'The gym should have that member scolded the first time and kicked out the second time,' wrote a third. Vaping is not universally illegal in the US, but it is regulated by local laws. Many states have comprehensive smoke-free indoor laws that include vapes, prohibiting them in the same locations where smoking is banned. Australian vaping laws Vaping is not outright illegal in Australia either, but there are strict regulations in place. On July 1, 2024, the law changed so that all vapes, regardless of whether they contain nicotine or not, can only be sold in a pharmacy for the purpose of helping people quit smoking or manage nicotine dependence. It is generally illegal to vape in places where tobacco smoking is banned too, but this can differ by state or territory. The government's reforms to vaping regulation are based on expert advice that they are a harm to public health. What are vapes and why are they harmful? Vapes, also known as e-cigarettes, are battery-operated devices that deliver an aerosol by heating a liquid that users breathe in. They can contain a range of chemicals, flavours, and nicotine. Even when vapes don't contain nicotine, they're still dangerous, according to the Department of Health. The various substances in the liquids can include several known cancer-causing agents such as formaldehyde, acetone, and acrolein (commonly found in weedkiller). Known health risks associated with vaping include irritation of the mouth and airways, persistent coughing, nausea and vomiting, and potential poisoning or seizures from inhaling excessive nicotine or ingesting e-liquid. Some chemicals in e-cigarette aerosols may also cause DNA damage. Many scientists are also worried that vaping could heighten the risk of lung disease, heart disease, and cancer. The effects of vaping on fitness The irony of the man in Nicole's posts vaping in the gym is that vaping impacts your physical fitness, including your endurance and workout performance. If you smoke or vape, you receive less oxygen in your heart, lungs, and muscles, which reduces your physical fitness level, as per Cleveland Clinic. Other side effects on your fitness may include increased rates of injury, less muscular strength, sleep disturbances, and shortness of breath.
