Prepare to be ruthless when buying a new car

Along with my official duties as a member of the Auto Express team, I'm also the unofficial go-to car guru for family, friends, friends of friends, acquaintances, passers-by, and pretty much everyone else who has a remote idea of what I do for a living. I'm always happy to help, but a recent encounter has left me feeling a little perturbed. Advertisement - Article continues below In the same week, I was approached by my partner's best friend and one of my old university lecturers – two people I was more than willing to assist with car buying (especially when they admitted that their know-how was somewhat limited). One had sadly seen their beloved Vauxhall Corsa written off due to a distracted lorry driver (thankfully nobody was injured), while the other needed a replacement for their trusty but ageing Citroen Xsara Picasso. After a bit of discussion, as well as a few test drives, they respectively decided on a Vauxhall Crossland and a Volvo XC40. So far so good. However, once it was time to talk money, a dealer sensed one of my car-buying apprentice's knowledge-gaps and used it as an opportunity to pile on the pressure. When I received a panicked phone call regarding the Crossland, I was troubled to hear: 'I need to put the deposit down today because the salesperson has to meet a target'. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below My advice to the Crossland buyer at that moment is the same advice I'm going to give you right now: if a seller is piling on too much pressure, hold your ground and say no, or simply walk away. Either way, their targets are simply not your problem. Advertisement - Article continues below Maybe I sound a bit harsh, but please hear me out. Salespeople and dealerships have targets to meet, and this concept isn't an issue, nor would I ever dream of preventing someone from achieving some kind of bonus to help pay the bills. However, what I can't tolerate is guilt-tripping and ultimately piling unacceptable levels of pressure on a buyer – especially one who's anxious about handing over thousands of pounds. Whether it's a deposit you're not certain about, a finance contract that's unsuitable, or anything else you don't wish to fork out on, never be afraid to say no to a salesperson, no matter how insistent they might be. The good news is that my Crossland buyer walked away and ended up with a better example at a different dealership. In the majority of cases, your buying experience will be stress-free, and the salesperson will be professional and polite. However, if for any reason you feel uncomfortable, please don't be afraid to say no or even walk away. It's your money and your decision. 2 Major Ways Tariffs Are Changing the Way We Buy Cars in America

Tariffs are expected to raise the prices of most cars, even those made in America. And while this isn't deterring Americans from buying cars — a recent survey conducted by Jerry found that 45% of Americans would like to buy or lease a car this year — it is changing their buying behaviors. Find Out: Read Next: Here's a look at how tariffs are changing how Americans buy cars. Among Americans who plan to buy a car this year, 23% said they aren't making any changes to their plans. But the majority are making shifts — though there isn't a consensus about the best way to time their car buying strategically. Of the Americans who plan to buy this year, more than 50% said they'd like to buy a car sooner than planned because of tariffs, and 25% said they'd postpone their purchase to see the impact of tariffs. Those who plan to buy earlier might end up coming out ahead — though it's still unclear how everything will shake out. 'For many buyers, acting sooner may lead to better deals before tariffs ripple through the market and drive up prices,' said Sinduja Rangarajan, data storytelling lead at Jerry. 'Automakers are still working through pre-tariff inventory and are in the early stages of strategizing price increases — but already, there are projections that tariffs could raise car prices by thousands of dollars.' Explore More: And it's not just the cars themselves that could get more expensive. 'Tariffs may also drive up future insurance costs, since imported steel and aluminum parts could make repairs more expensive, which is another reason to shop now,' Rangarajan said. 'In the near-term, many brands are offering summer discounts.' However, there may also be advantages to waiting to make a car purchase. 'Waiting to buy could help you avoid price spikes, rushed financing and bad loan terms as the market digests new tariffs,' Rangarajan said. 'Holding off gives you time to see how things shake out and potentially score better deals later.' With so many unknowns, it's best to plan your car buying around when is right for you. 'Ultimately, the smarter financial move depends on your budget, your timing and the specific models you're considering,' Rangarajan said. 'Some foreign-made cars may still offer strong value even after tariffs, while others built in North America could sidestep price hikes altogether.' Among Americans who are planning to buy a car this year, 31% said they'd switch to an American brand because of the tariffs, the survey found. However, this isn't a surefire way to avoid tariff price hikes. 'It's true that American automakers like Tesla, Ford and Jeep are largely shielded from tariff-driven price hikes, but the reality is more nuanced,' Rangarajan said. 'Many foreign brands, including Honda and Toyota, have spent years localizing production in North America, and even U.S. brands rely on global parts. 'In fact, the five lowest-priced cars according to our analysis are foreign-made, even after accounting for tariffs — the Nissan Versa, Kicks and Sentra, the Toyota Corolla and the VW Jetta,' she continued. 'Tariffs affect each model differently.' Is a 20-year-old car too old to buy? Why age isn't as important as you might think

Buying older used car models can save drivers big bucks. The question is, how old is too old for a used vehicle? Is there a definitive age cutoff when it comes to buying a reliable used car model? There are several factors that should be considered when searching for an older used model. Surprisingly, age isn't as important as mileage, make/model, and overall reliability when it comes to a car's lifespan. Age can play a role in vehicle lifespan, but it isn't always the best metric to gauge the potential longevity of a vehicle. In fact, some older well-maintained vehicles could be nearly as reliable as newer model years based on design. A 20-year-old car that has traveled for the average annual miles driven per year (14,489 miles according to Kelley Blue Book) is likely well past its prime. On the other hand, vehicles that have accumulated less miles per year than the annual average and are well-maintained could still last for years before major mechanical issues. Debilitating rust or major mechanical failures are cited as signs a vehicle is "too old to drive", according to a piece regarding vehicle age by Capital One. That said, there isn't a specific vehicle age where any car becomes so antiquated that it's rendered useless. Age may not be the best indicator of where a vehicle currently is in its lifespan, but mileage (on original parts) can help car buyers understand how many miles and years a vehicle has left on average. A study by an automotive research site, compiled a list of the 30 vehicles most likely to last for up to 250,000 miles. The study analyzed odometer reading data for over 402 million vehicles. The average vehicle only has an 8.6% chance of reaching 250,000 miles or higher, according to iSeeCars. Thus, 250K miles is a fair mileage number to set as the end of a vehicle's lifespan (optimistically). Realistically, most vehicles will only last up to 200,000 miles (or less) before encountering major mechanical issues. Several Toyota models topped iSeeCars' list of vehicles most likely to reach 250,000 miles or more. Vehicles like the Toyota Tundra pickup truck and Toyota Sequoia SUV have over a 36% chance of reaching the mileage milestone, which is a much higher percentage than that of the average vehicle (8.6%). Models like the Toyota 4Runner SUV and Toyota Tacoma pickup truck have over a 26% chance of reaching 250K miles or more. Vehicle age has no correlation with mileage because the annual miles a driver accumulates can vary. Assuming that a car is driven for Kelley Blue Book's estimate of an average 14,489 miles a year and the average vehicle lasts for around 200,000 miles before major mechanical issues, a conservative estimate for a car's lifespan is 13-14 years. You can get a more specific estimate for your vehicle by dividing 200,000 total miles by your average annual mileage. Vehicles with above-average reliability such as the Toyota models that topped iSeeCars' list can have an above-average lifespan. The numbers used to calculate a car's lifespan are based on miles driven, not years owned. So, a 20-year-old car that has accumulated under 200,000 miles could last for years, depending on its mileage and reliability. Based on the iSeeCars study, at least six different vehicles have over a 25% chance of reaching 250K miles or more, increasing their lifespan estimates significantly. Toyota Sequoia Toyota Tundra Toyota 4Runner Toyota Tacoma Toyota Highlander Hybrid No car is too old to buy, but a car's mileage can be too high to be reliable without significant repair costs. Parts such as engines and transmissions experience extreme wear and tear as cars accumulate 200K miles. Luckily for drivers, some cars (like Toyota models) age better than others in terms of degradation. If a car has racked up so many miles that it needs a new engine or transmission, it may not be worth buying due to the cost of parts and repairs.
