For the week just ended, the ringgit gave up its earlier gains at the beginning of the week as escalating geopolitical concerns spurred demand for the safe-haven US dollar. However, the market showed a slight sign of recovery at the end of the week, as some investors took the opportunity to return to emerging currencies due to the latest White House announcement regarding the ongoing Iran-Israel war. The ringgit ended the week easier against the greenback, closing at 4.2505/2565 on Friday from 4.2435/2480 a week earlier. The local note traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit rose vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.9245/9289 from 2.9448/9482 at Friday's close, went up against the British pound to 5.7356/7437 from 5.7482/7543 previously, but depreciated versus the euro to 4.9000/9069 from 4.8906/8958 at the end of last week. The ringgit traded mostly higher against Asean currencies. The local note declined against the Singapore dollar to 3.3088/3140 on Friday from 3.3077/3118 in the previous week, advanced versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.2/259.7 from 260.2/260.6 previously, and strengthened versus the Thai baht to 12.9727/9969 from 13.0807/1018 last week. Cambodian DPM urges investors to maximise benefits from Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, bilateral free trade agreements

PHNOM PENH: (Bernama-Xinhua) Cambodian Permanent Deputy Prime Minister and Cabinet Minister Vongsey Vissoth (pic) on Friday (June 20) urged investors to reap maximum benefits from the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement and bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs), Xinhua reported. Cambodia is a member of the RCEP agreement, which engages with 15 Asia-Pacific countries, and the kingdom also has bilateral FTAs with China, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Under these free trade pacts, Cambodian products have been exported to those countries with preferential tariffs. "I would like to urge investors to maximise the opportunities and benefits from the RCEP agreement and Cambodia's bilateral FTAs with China, South Korea, and the UAE," Vissoth said in a speech to hundreds of investors and business executives at a Cambodia-international investment promotion platform in Phnom Penh. He said these free trade pacts have played a crucial role in "diversifying markets for garment products to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), East Asia, and other regions besides the United States and Europe." Entering into force in 2022, RCEP comprises 10 Asean member states of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, and their five trading partners, namely China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. Zheng Xianjiang, co-president of the Cambodia Confederation of Investors Association, said Cambodia is a "golden hub" for investment as the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway, the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, and the international deep-sea port of Sihanoukville have provided convenience for trade exchanges between Cambodia and the rest of the world. Zheng added that these trade pacts have created favourable trade and investment opportunities for investors in Cambodia. Cambodian Ministry of Commerce's Secretary of State and spokesperson Penn Sovicheat said the RCEP agreement and bilateral FTAs will help Cambodia realise its ambitious goals of becoming an upper-middle income country by 2030 and a high-income nation by 2050. "These free trade pacts have not only given a big boost to Cambodia's sustainable trade growth in the long run, but also become a magnet to attract more foreign direct investments to the kingdom," he told Xinhua. Kin Phea, director general of the International Relations Institute of Cambodia, a think tank under the Royal Academy of Cambodia, said the RCEP has emerged as a key advocate for free trade and multilateralism in the wake of escalating protectionist policies, particularly from the United States. Japan scraps US meeting after Washington demands more defence spending

WASHINGTON, June 21 — Japan has cancelled a regular high-level meeting with its key ally the US after the Trump administration demanded it spend more on defence, the Financial Times reported yesterday. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had been expected to meet Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and Defence Minister Gen Nakatani in Washington on July 1 for the annual 2+2 security talks. But Tokyo scrapped the meeting after the US asked Japan to boost defence spending to 3.5 per cent of gross domestic product, higher than an earlier request of 3 per cent, the newspaper said, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter. Japan's Nikkei newspaper reported today that President Donald Trump's government was demanding that its Asian allies, including Japan, spend 5 per cent of GDP on defence. A US official who asked not to be identified told Reuters that Japan had 'postponed' the talks in a decision made several weeks ago. The official did not cite a reason. A non-government source familiar with the issue said he had also heard Japan had pulled out of the meeting but not the reason for it doing so. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said she had no comment on the FT report when asked about it at regular briefing. The Pentagon also had no immediate comment. Japan's embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment. The nation's foreign and defence ministries and the Prime Minister's Office did not answer phone calls seeking comment outside business hours today. The FT said the higher spending demand was made in recent weeks by Elbridge Colby, the third-most senior Pentagon official, who has also recently upset another key US ally in the Indo-Pacific by launching a review of a project to provide Australia with nuclear-powered submarines. In March, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said that other nations do not decide Japan's defence budget after Colby, in his nomination hearing to be under secretary of defence for policy, called for Tokyo to spend more to counter China.
